Book Public Diplomacy and Academic Mobility in Sweden

Download or read book Public Diplomacy and Academic Mobility in Sweden written by Andreas Åkerlund and published by Nordic Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic exchange is one of the cornerstones of public diplomacy. Receiving foreign academics is one way of influencing foreign elites in an attempt to build goodwill and stable international networks. The result is that academic mobility and the internationalization of higher education and research have always been directly affected by foreign policy decisions and diplomatic considerations — and still are. In Public Diplomacy and Academic Mobility in Sweden, Andreas Åkerlund analyses Sweden’s scholarship programs for foreign academics in a long-term perspective. Here a quantitative analysis of scholarship holders is related to Swedish exchange policy and grant practices by looking at the Swedish Institute in particular. The result is an account of how public diplomacy, foreign policy, development assistance, and the ideas of a knowledge-based economy and international competition affected academic exchanges with Sweden in the twentieth century.

Book Sport Development and Olympic Studies

Download or read book Sport Development and Olympic Studies written by Stephan Wassong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2017 the Olympic Studies Centre of the German Sport University organized a workshop on Sport Development and Olympic Studies. This book resulted from the presentations and discussions they engendered around identifying new international collaborative research fields and deepening research on the Olympics, the Olympic Movement and sport development. The effective application of the hermeneutical method unifies the chapters. The interpretive strengths of this method sharpen the analytical perspective of the chapters, with the strict requirements for the use of primary sources meaning that the contributors have conducted extensive archival research. Assuring thematic coherence, the studies assembled for this book focus on the analysis of processes of continuity, transformation, and development across four areas: sport institutions and their policies; commissions within and policies of governing bodies of sports; legacy discussions; and sport events within the summer and winter Olympic Games transformed into political and cultural spectacles. Bringing together experts in the field, Sport Development and Olympic Studies will be of great use to scholars of Sport Development, Sport History, The Olympics and Sport Sociology. This book was originally published as a special issue of The International Journal of the History of Sport.

Book The Olympic Games the Soviet Sports Bureaucracy and the Cold War

Download or read book The Olympic Games the Soviet Sports Bureaucracy and the Cold War written by Jenifer Parks and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-12-27 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using previously inaccessible archival documents, this study provides a longitudinal investigation of the middle levels of Soviet bureaucracy responsible for overseeing Olympic Sport during the Cold War. Spanning the period from the USSR’s Olympic debut in 1952 through the 1980 Games held in Moscow, this book argues that behind the high-profile performances of Soviet elite athletes, a legion of sports administrators worked within international sports organizations and the Soviet party-state to increase Soviet chances of success and make Soviet representatives a respected voice in international sports. Soviet officials helped expand the Olympic movement, increasing the participation of women, developing nations, and socialist bloc countries, while achieving Soviet political and diplomatic aims. Soviet representatives, over the course of only a few decades, became a dominant and respected voice within international sports circles, actively promoting Olympic ideals abroad even as they transformed those ideals to better align with Soviet goals. In the process, Soviet sports contributed to the evolution of Olympic sport, integrating the Soviet Union into an emerging global culture, and contributing to transformations within the Soviet Union. Back home in the USSR, the Sports Committee's leading personalities represented a new kind of Soviet bureaucrat, who emerged in the late years of Stalinism and contributed to the professionalization of party-state apparatus. Standing at the intersection between state and society, between Soviet political goals and their execution, and between Olympic sport and Communist ideology, mid-level Soviet sports administrators demonstrated ideological drive, political savvy, and professional pragmatism, providing the impetus, expertise, and experience to transform broad ideological constructs into specific policies and procedures in the Soviet Union and realize Soviet propaganda and foreign policy goals in international and Olympic sports.

The archipelago consists of around 6,500 islands, but only around 60 are inhabited. The population of Åland is 30,000, with the majority of the inhabitants speaking Swedish rather than Finnish. Åland has a special autonomous status within Finland, as it was demilitarized in 1856 and became a neutral zone in the aftermath of the Crimean War. The Åland Convention of 1921 granted the islands self-governance and recognition of their Swedish language and culture. Today, the economy of Åland is mainly based on shipping, tourism, and agriculture. The islands are known for their scenic beauty, charming towns, and outdoor recreational activities.
