The framework for this analysis is founded on the contrast between two metaphysics used by evolutionary biologists in discussing their own discipline: materialistic/populational thinking and essentialistic/typological thinking. Book excerpt: Historical archaeologists often become so involved in their potsherd patterns they seldom have time or energy left to address the broader processes responsi ble for the material culture patterns they recognize. Some ofus haveurged our colleagues to use the historical record as a springboard from which to launch hypotheses with which to better understand the behavioral and cultural pro cesses responsible for the archaeological record. Toooften, this urging has re sulted in reports designed like a sandwich, having a slice of "historical back ground," followed by a totally different "archaeological record," and closed with a weevil-ridden slice of "interpretation" of questionable nutritive value for understanding the past. The reader is often left to wonder what the archae ological meat had to do with either slice of bread, since the connection be tween the documented history and the material culture is left to the reader's imagination, and the connection between the interpretation and the other disparate parts is tenuous at best. The plethora of stale archaeological sandwiches in the literature has re sulted at the methodological level from a too-narrow focus on the specific history and archaeology ofa site and the individuals involvedon it, rather than a focus on the explanation of broader processes of culture to which the actors and events at the site-specific level responded.

She presents a series of cutting-edge experiments in arts and humanities book publishing, showcasing the radical new forms that book-based scholarly work might take in the digital age. Adema's proposed alternative futures for the scholarly book go beyond such print-based assumptions as fixity, stability, the single author, originality, and copyright, reaching instead for a dynamic and emergent materiality. Adema suggests ways to unbind the book, describing experiments in scholarly book publishing with new forms of anonymous collaborative authorship, radical open access publishing, and processual, living, and remixed publications, among other practices. She doesn't cast digital as the solution and print as the problem; the problem in scholarly publishing, she argues, is not print itself, but the way print has been commodified and essentialized. Adema explores alternative, more ethical models of authorship; constructs an alternative genealogy of openness; and examines opportunities for intervention in current cultures of knowledge production. Finally, asking why it is that we cut and bind our research together at all, she examines two book publishing projects that experiment with remix and reuse and try to rethink and reperform the book-apparatus by taking responsibility for the cuts they make.

Book excerpt: Kanchipuram was one of the important and major urban centers in the lower Palar river in south India during the Early Historical period. Now it is a satellite center of Metro Chennai, however, still, the importance of the town has appeared in the form of art and architecture, pilgrimage, education and industries. The archaeological explorations followed by excavations were carried out by the Department of Sanskrit and Indian Culture, Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Maha Vidyalaya (SCSVMV Deemed to be University), Enathur, Kanchipuram on the northern part of Tamil Nadu under the direction of Prof. S. Rama Krishna Pisipaty, author of the present volume, along with his research scholars from 2000 onwards. This effort revealed that the region to be very prolific and has high potential from an archaeological point of view. The excavator exposed many significant localities in and around the Kanchipuram of different natures such as Stone Age, Early Iron Age Megalithic burials as well as habitations along with iron workshops and also Early Historic period structures, both secular and religious, besides collecting a rich crop of antiquities. The explorations and excavations brought to light that the early human occupation in the lower Palar right from the Early Stone Age and a continuation in human activities have appeared even till now in the region. By the end of the last millennium BCE, the concentration of settlements appeared towards the rivers Vegavati and Palar in the region. Therefore, the entire cultural appendage has been divided into three volumes with different headings, depending upon the nature of assemblage viz. 1. Stone Age 2. Early Iron Age 3. Early Historical period. The present volume no 1 deals with the evidence related to the Early Historical period activities (Late Sangam, pre or early Pallava and during Pallava i.m. a few centuries before starting the present era up to Pallava) in and around the Kanchipuram region, from Sriperambattur taluk on northeastern up to present Palar river bed on the southwestern direction. The richest crop of Inscriptions and Art & Architecture of the Kanchipuram region are not discussed in the monograph which has already been studied and published by many scholars. The present volume is a brief survey of the results of different field seasons explorations and excavations so as to enable the readers to have a bird’s-eye view of the culture, technologies and other aspects relating to the Early Historical period to realize the importance of the region in its proper resemblance.

Now historical archaeologists are demonstrating how material culture can be used to examine the processes that have erected boundaries between people. Drawing on case studies from around the world, the essays in this volume highlight diverse moments in the rise of capitalist civilization both in Western Europe and its colonies. In the first section, the contributors address the dynamics of the racial system that emerged from European colonialism. They show how archaeological remains shed light on the institution of slavery in the American Southeast, on the treatment of Native Americans by Mormon settlers, and on the color line in colonial southern Africa. The next group of articles considers how gender was negotiated in nineteenth-century New York City, in colonial Ecuador, and on Jamaican coffee plantations. A final section focuses on the issue of class division by examining the built environment of eighteenth-century Catalonia and material remains and housing from early industrial Massachusetts. These essays constitute an archaeology of capitalism and clearly demonstrate the importance of history in shaping cultural consciousness. Arguing that material culture is itself an active agent in the negotiation of social difference, they reveal the ways in which historical archaeologists can contribute to both the definition and dismantling of the lines that divide.

To do so, it explores the connection – most visibly through nationalism and global capitalism - from its origins in the early modern period to World War II. How separate is the development of archaeological tourism from that of the formation of archaeology as a discipline? And do the fields operate in two different worlds? Scholarly discussions have largely treated them as distinct fields with no connection, while histories of archaeology, in particular, have focused on aspects such as the history of archaeological discoveries, archaeological thought and, more recently, the political relationship between archaeology and nationalism and other ideologies. Largely missing from all these accounts has been an examination of how archaeology has been incorporated into society, for example through something that all humans enjoy – leisure – in the form of archaeological tourism. Moreover, just as histories of archaeology have largely ignored the connection between archaeology and tourism, so too has tourism in the reverse direction. Recent studies on tourism have centered on topics such as economy (sustainable and recession tourism) and new types of tourism (including ecotourism and medical tourism).
