Book Women s Writing in the British Atlantic World

Download or read book Women s Writing in the British Atlantic World written by Kate Chedgzoy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-10-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 2007 book, Kate Chedgzoy explores the ways in which women writers of the early modern British Atlantic world imagined, visited, created and haunted textual sites of memory. Asking how women's writing from all parts of the British Isles and Britain's Atlantic colonies employed the resources of memory to make sense of the changes that were refashioning that world, the book suggests that memory is itself the textual site where the domestic echoes of national crisis can most insistently be heard. Offering readings of the work of poets who contributed to the oral traditions of Wales, Scotland and Ireland, and analysing poetry, fiction and life-writings by well-known and less familiar writers such as Hester Pulter, Lucy Hutchinson and Aphra Behn, this book explores how women's writing of memory gave expression to the everyday, intimate consequences of the major geopolitical changes that took place in the British Atlantic world in the seventeenth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Forgotten Empire: Vijayanagar: Large Print By Robert Sewell we have fortunately more direct evidence, for the discovery of which we have to thank Mr. Ferguson. I have mentioned above that at the end of the MS. volume are copies of two letters concerning China. These were written subsequent to the year 1520 by Vasco Calvo and Christovao Vieyra. Mr. Ferguson has pointed out to me that, in the third DECADA (liv. IV, caps. 4, 5), after quoting some passages almost verbatim from this chronicle of Nuniz regarding Vijayanagar, Barros writes: "According to two letters which our people had two or three years afterwards from these two men, Vasco Calvo, brother of Diogo Calvo, and Christovao Vieyra, who were prisoners in Canton, etc...." He also mentions these letters in two subsequent passages, and quotes from them.

The work opens with a description of the geography of the area and ends with sections on the fine arts and on the coins and currency system of the Deccan, while the eight central sections cover the early dynasties, each described in their chronological order. Notwithstanding the limited nature of the sources, mainly inscriptions the history has been compiled in all its aspects, political, social, religious, cultural and economic. As it is intended for the serious students and for the general reader, an attempt has been made to present a complete picture of all major events, whilst minor details and scholastic discussions have generally been omitted.

Book Historical Dictionary of Medieval India

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Medieval India written by Iqtidar Alam Khan and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2008-04-25 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The medieval period of Indian history is difficult to define clearly. It may be perceived as the long phase of India's transition from the ancient to the immediately pre-colonial times. The latter period would naturally be imagined commencing from Vasco da Gama's voyage round the Cape of Good Hope in 1498, or, alternatively, the establishment of the Mughal empire (1526). More definitely though, the renewed Islamic advance into north India, roughly from 1000 A.D. onwards leading to the rise of the Delhi Sultanate (1206), can be held to mark, in political and cultural terms, the beginning of the medieval period. For the purpose of the Historical Dictionary of Medieval India, the period from 1000 A.D. to 1526 A.D. will be considered India's medieval times. The turbulent history of this period is told through the book's chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on key people, historical geography, arts, institutions, events, and other important terms.
