La straordinarietà dell’opera analizzata in questo libro consiste nell’essere una mirabile testimonianza da un lato della persistente forza della cultura classica, per quanto riguarda il Vecchio Mondo; dall’altro, dell’applicazione dei nuovi saperi costruiti grazie ai viaggi e alle scoperte geografiche più recenti, nella descrizione dei Nuovi Mondi.
