Laureato con lode in Economia e gestione aziendale presso la Facoltà di Urbino, nella sua pluriennale attività di consulenza a contatto con le micro e piccole imprese ha spesso riscontrato una carenza di preparazione scolastica e manageriale degli imprenditori a capo delle realtà aziendali. Da qui nasce l'idea di questo libro: realizzare un'indagine per riscontrare il livello di cultura (declinata nelle diverse accezioni del termine) in un campione significativo di micro e piccole imprese, attraverso un questionario inviato a oltre 9.000 imprenditori. Dai risultati dell'indagine emergono il livello di preparazione media dell'imprenditore, spesso carente, e i vari stili di leadership esercitati in azienda, con un focus su un momento particolarmente delicato della vita dell'impresa quale il passaggio generazionale e con un'analisi delle problematiche che inevitabilmente questo evento porta con sé. La figura imprenditoriale che si delinea è quella di un uomo che fa da sé, seguendo l'intuito piuttosto che la scienza. Mal sopportando programmazioni ed indirizzi teorici per la risoluzione dei problemi, il piccolo imprenditore pensa in maniera autonoma ed opportunista, ha poca fiducia verso il mondo scolastico e verso l'istruzione personale e dei giovani in genere, pensa di superare ogni ostacolo internamente con le proprie risorse, con la propria esperienza e con le proprie idee, rifiutando spesso approcci e confronti con procedure di programmazione e controllo formali. Che fare quindi? Occorrerebbe fare e trasferire un po' di cultura, in senso ampio, anche attraverso una maggiore interazione tra la scuola e l'impresa, in modo da portare all'imprenditore le informazioni che spesso gli mancano per conoscere una realtà concorrenziale internazionale, che rischia di lasciare indietro e per sempre le nostre piccole imprese. Questo studio, ricco di dati, riferimenti ed analisi, aiuta a riflettere su una nuova progettualità d'impresa e di imprenditore. La speranza è quella di leggere, un giorno, che i livelli italiani di scolarità, d'istruzione e di formazione sono migliorati e che le aziende ricercano giovani sempre più istruiti da immettere nei loro "laboratori culturali" per produrre beni e servizi innovativi, dandone nel contempo anche conto alla comunità nella quale esercitano, con orgoglio, la propria attività. Pettigrew This book has developed from an international research workshop organ ized by the Dipartimento di Economia e Direzione Aziendale, University of Venice, and the Centre for Corporate Strategy and Change, Warwick Business School, University of Warwick. The purpose of the workshop was to foster the growth of a European network of scholars and to help create a "European perspective" in studying strategic change. The ten chapters in this book were first presented in Venice in May 1991 and have been substantially revised since then. The ten commentaries on the chapters are in most cases substantial developments of the oral responses made at the workshop, as indeed is the final review chapter by Andrew Van de Ven. The theme of this book, the study of strategic change processes, remains as theoretically alive and empirically real in the 1990s as it did in the 1980s. For many organizations in the European and North American context, the 1980s was an era of radical change. In this respect there is a wide array of examples. Structural changes in old industries such as coal, shipbuilding, steel, and heavy engineering led to a great employment loss and the impoverishment of certain regional economies that had remained dependent on those industries. The 2019 World Development Report will study how the nature of work is changing as a result of advances in technology today. Technological progress disrupts existing systems. A new social contract is needed to smooth the transition and guard against rising inequality. Significant investments in human capital throughout a person’s lifecycle are vital to this effort. If workers are to stay competitive against machines they need to train or retool existing skills. A social protection system that includes a minimum basic level of protection for workers and citizens can complement new forms of employment. Improved private sector policies to encourage startup activity and competition can help countries compete in the digital age. Governments also need to ensure that firms pay their fair share of taxes, in part to fund this new social contract. The 2019 World Development Report presents an analysis of these issues based upon the available evidence.
