Download or read book The Culture of Print written by Roger Chartier and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The leading historians who are the authors of this work offer a highly original account of one of the most important transformations in Western culture: the change brought about by the discovery and development of printing in Europe. Focusing primarily on printed matter other than books, The Culture of Print emphasizes the specific and local contexts in which printed materials, such as broadsheets, flysheets, and posters, were used in modern Europe. The authors show that festive, ritual, cultic, civic, and pedagogic uses of print were social activities that involved deciphering texts in a collective way, with those who knew how to read leading those who did not. Only gradually did these collective forms of appropriation give way to a practice of reading--privately, silently, using the eyes alone--that has become common today. This wide-ranging work opens up new historical and methodological perspectives and will become a focal point of debate for historians and sociologists interested in the cultural transformations that accompanied the rise of modern societies. Originally published in 1989. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. Download or read book Age of the Democratic Revolution A Political History of Europe and America 1760 1800 Volume 1 written by R. R. Palmer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Western world as a whole, the period from about 1760 to 1800 was the great revolutionary era in which the outlines of the modern democratic state came into being. It is the thesis of this major work that the American, French, and Polish revolutions, and the movements for political change in Britain, Ireland, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, and other countries, though each distinctive in its own way, were all manifestations of recognizably similar political ideas, needs, and conflicts.

Download or read book The Ancien R gime written by Catherine Betty Abigail Behrens and published by W. W. Norton. This book was released on 1967 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term, "Ancien Régime", was first used by contemporaries to describe retrospectively the social and political structure in France which the Revolution destroyed. It is shown here to be applicable also to different countries at different dates -- for example, to Russia at the end of the nineteenth century -- but it is discussed principally in relation to France in the fateful years between 1748 and 1789. This is the study of a complex society -- its economy, institutions and beliefs, and their erosion by material and ideological change.
