Book excerpt: A generous selection and fresh translation of Lorca’s suites, work that might have taken its place beside Songs (1927) and Poem of the Deep Song (1931) as a trilogy of Lorca’s early modernist lyric. More personal than the other two works, Lorca’s suites explore a ‘heart without echo’ in his time.

Book Federico Garc a Lorca

Download or read book Federico Garc a Lorca written by Federico Bonaddio and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2010 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of Lorca's poetic trajectory. This volume is one of few surveys in English of the whole of Lorca's poetry and the first to concentrate entirely on self-consciousness, a subject which it sees as central to our understanding of the work of a poet writing in themost self-conscious of literary periods: the Modernist era. Focusing on poems which have the poet, art and creativity as their subject, or which draw attention at a formal level to issues of practice or style, it shows how these poems speak for or against contemporary aesthetic doctrine, thereby revealing the extent of the poet's allegiance to it and the positions he takes up in the process of making his own mark in the literary field. In so doing itcharts the development of a poet whose self-conscious engagement with his art offers an explanation as to why his work, in the space of little more than a decade and a half, should have been so singular and diverse. FEDERICO BONADDIO lectures in Modern Spanish Studies at King's College London.

Book Love Desire and Identity in the Theatre of Federico Garc a Lorca

Download or read book Love Desire and Identity in the Theatre of Federico Garc a Lorca written by Paul McDermid and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2007 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical desire and metaphysical love in the theatre of Federico García Lorca. A dialectical tension between physical desire and metaphysical love lies at the heart of the theatre works of Federico García Lorca, and the deployment of queer theory's critique of gender and identity is surprisingly effective inthis discussion of love versus desire. Seldom is enough attention paid to the poet's early works, and so this book offers a timely review of the 'religious tragedy' Cristo, as well as Mariana Pineda, uncoveringin these early offerings an explicit proposal of the supremacy of love over desire. A meditation on the fragmentary and challenging El público yields a vivid panorama of identity in crisis, and a paradigmatic Lorcan sacrifice of self for love. The ostensibly more conventional tragedies of Amor de Don Perlimplín con Belisa en su jardín and Yerma are also reassessed in terms of self-sacrifice and self-love. The study concludes with an argument for a practical re-reading of La casa de Bernarda Alba, which emphasises how the play might be saved from po-faced realism with music, humour and drag performance. PAUL McDERMID lectures in Spanish at Queen's University Belfast.

Book Voices from the Fuente Viva

Download or read book Voices from the Fuente Viva written by Amy Nauss Millay and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many twentieth-century Spanish American writers sought to give voice to their countries' native inhabitants. Drawing upon anthropology and literary theory, this book explores the representation of orality by major Spanish American anthropologist-writers: Lydia Cabrera, Jose Maria Arguedas, and Miguel Barnet. These writers played a quintessential role of the Spanish American writer from colonial times to the present: they inscribed the mythical world of a vanishing Other by creating a poetic effect of orality in their ethnographies and narratives. This book argues that supposed differences between oral and written culture are rhetorical devices in the elaboration of literature, specifically modern fiction in Spanish America. Fictionalization of the oral requires adherence to the theory of a great divide between orality and literacy. Because the texts considered here are predicated on the ideality of speech, a contradiction underlies their shared desire to salvage oral tradition. This book explores how anthropologist-writers have addressed this compelling dilemma in their anthropological and narrative writings. at Tufts University.

Book Lorca s Poet in New York

Download or read book Lorca s Poet in New York written by Betty Jean Craige and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in 1929–1930, when Federico García Lorca was visiting Columbia University, Poet in New York stands as one of the great Waste Land poems of the 20th century. It expresses, as Betty Jean Craige writes in this volume,"a sudden radical estrangement of the poet from his universe"—an an estrangement graphically delineated in the dissonant, violent imagery which the poet derives from the technological world of New York. Craige here describes—through close analysis of the structure, style, and themes of individual works in Poet in New York—the chaos into which this world plunges the poet, and the process whereby he is able, gradually, to recover his identity with the regenerative forces of nature. Her study demonstrates that, though seemingly unique in form and motifs, Poet in New York is integral with Lorca's overall poetic achievement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revised edition of this major writer's complete poetical work And I who was walking with the earth at my waist, saw two snowy eagles and a naked girl. The one was the other and the girl was neither. -from "Qasida of the Dark Doves" Federico García Lorca was the most beloved poet of twentieth-century Spain and one of the world's most influential modernist writers. His work has long been admired for its passionate urgency and haunting evocation of sorrow and loss. Perhaps more persistently than any writer of his time, he sought to understand and accommodate the numinous sources of his inspiration. Though he died at age thirty-eight, he left behind a generous body of poetry, drama, musical arrangements, and drawings, which continue to surprise and inspire. Christopher Maurer, a leading García Lorca scholar and editor, has brought together new and substantially revised translations by twelve poets and translators, placed side by side with the Spanish originals. The seminal volume Poet in New York is also included here in its entirety. This is the most comprehensive collection in English of a poet who—as Maurer writes in his illuminating introduction—"spoke unforgettably of all that most interests us: the otherness of nature, the demons of personal identity and artistic creation, sex, childhood, and death."

Book excerpt: The passionate life and violent death of Federico Garcia Lorca (1898–1936) retain an enduring fascination for readers around the world. Murdered by Nationalists at the outset of the Spanish Civil War, Lorca died at the peak of his creative powers. He remains his country's most widely translated writer, surpassed only by Cervantes in terms of critical commentary. This selection includes 55 of the 68 poems that comprised Lorca's 1921 Libro de poemas, all of them in their entirety and in their original sequence. Imbued with the spirit and folklore of the poet's native Andalusia, these verses feature the most complex spiritual content of any of Lorca's works. Editor Stanley Appelbaum provides sensitive, accurate English translations on the pages facing the original Spanish, as well as an informative introduction to the author's life and oeuvre, plus notes on the individual poems. An outstanding resource for students and teachers of Spanish language and literature, this compilation will enchant any lover of poetry.

Book Tropics of Desire

Book excerpt: While not on the scale of their European and North American counterparts, gays and lesbians have become increasingly open and visible in urban Latin America, with large public displays recently held in Buenos Aires, Mexico, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. This increased visibility is forcing the general public to come to terms with what has, until now, been a silent part of their population. This book takes a personal look at the activities of Latin America's homosexual community, and the varying perception of it by the populace as a whole. c. Book News Inc.
