Download or read book Cucurbita Biology Distribution and Habitat written by Elias D. Kerrick and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-03 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexico is the center of origin, domestication, and diversification of four cultivated species of cucurbits: Cucurbita pepo L., C. ficifolia Bouché, C. moschata (Duch. ex Lam.) Duch. Ex Poir. and C. argyrosperma Huber. Cucurbita: Biology, Distribution and Habitat examines these cucurbits which exhibit high intraspecific diversity. The authors also explore DNA barcoding, a well-established technique to identify and establish evolutionary links and gaps in plants, as well as map their medicinal properties.Studies show that Cucurbita ficifolia has antihyperglycaemic, antilipidemic, antioxidant, anti-tumor, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anthelmintic properties and has beneficial effects on cancers, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. As such, the different effects of Cucurbita ficifolia on non-communicable diseases are discussed. The pumpkin, a common vegetable found in climatic regions around the world, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae. The closing chapter discusses the uses of pumpkin flour in the food industry.

Download or read book Pollination Biology written by Dharam P. Abrol and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-05 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has a wider approach not strictly focused on crop production compared to other books that are strictly oriented towards bees, but has a generalist approach to pollination biology. It also highlights relationships between introduced and wild pollinators and consequences of such introductions on communities of wild pollinating insects. The chapters on biochemical basis of plant-pollination interaction, pollination energetics, climate change and pollinators and pollinators as bioindicators of ecosystem functioning provide a base for future insights into pollination biology. The role of honeybees and wild bees on crop pollination, value of bee pollination, planned honeybee pollination, non-bee pollinators, safety of pollinators, pollination in cages, pollination for hybrid seed production, the problem of diseases, genetically modified plants and bees, the role of bees in improving food security and livelihoods, capacity building and awareness for pollinators are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Agriculture is the lever with which humans transformed the earth over the last 10,000 years and created new forms of plant and animal species that have forever altered the face of the planet. In the last decade, significant technological and methodological advances in both molecular biology and archaeology have revolutionized the study of plant and animal domestication and are reshaping our understanding of the transition from foraging to farming, one of the major turning points in human history. This groundbreaking volume for the first time brings together leading archaeologists and biologists working on the domestication of both plants and animals to consider a wide variety of archaeological and genetic approaches to tracing the origin and dispersal of domesticates. It provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in this quickly changing field as well as reviews of recent findings on specific crop and livestock species in the Americas, Eurasia, and Africa. Offering a unique global perspective, it explores common challenges and potential avenues for future progress in documenting domestication.

Download or read book Vegetable Production and Practices written by Gregory E Welbaum and published by CABI. This book was released on 2015-01-30 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successful vegetable production in a modern competitive market requires an understanding of many more factors than the biology of crops and the production techniques involved. This major new textbook brings the science and practice of vegetable production right up to date by addressing modern culture techniques and the recent challenges of consumer demand facing producers today. It introduces vegetable production from the perspective of producing high quality produce that satisfies the needs of the modern consumer. Beginning with the basics of how vegetables are grown using high and low input methods, including organic and sustainable production techniques, the book goes on to introduce and discuss many topics covered less comprehensively in older texts, including Good Agricultural Practices to improve quality, reduce biological contamination and secure food safety; water management; cropping systems; plasticulture; protected culture and mineral nutrition. Vegetable Production and Practices also introduces the use of molecular biology for genetic improvement of crops. Issues specific to individual vegetable crops are addressed by family, including their diseases, harvesting, quality attributes and other issues of increasing importance to consumers, including the role of vegetables in human health. Professor Gregory E. Welbaum has a long history of teaching successful courses in horticulture at Virginia Tech and other universities in the US and worldwide. Vegetable Production Practices has been specifically designed to accompany courses in vegetable crop production, so is ideally suited to inspire students in crop and horticultural sciences, as well as provide a useful reference for experienced practitioners.
