Book excerpt: Dirty Old Mans Day at The allotment Granddad liked taking her up the allotment. She loved it too. There was always fruit to be picked which she loved to do. For him it was about the forbidden fruit. He’d bought her a present and she wanted to show him how gratefull she was. Taster: “Move back a little sweetheart.” He said as he pulled the garage door out and up. Then he went in and over to the corner and grabbed the three quarter sized tools for her, the shovel spade and fork were still wrapped up in the cellophane from the shop. He turned back around and held them up. “Oh Granddad, are they for me?” She squealed then she ran into the garage and threw her arms around him, pressing her little face up against his big belly. He looked down and kissed her on the top of her head right between the cute little pig tails. “Of course my darling.” He said, hugging her head with his free hand. “Are we going to the allotment then?” She asked as she broke her hug and glared at her presents. Even though they were designed for smaller people they were a little over large for her but she cared not. Granddad had bought them for her which meant that he loved her and she loved them, and him too of course. “I think we might just do that, but only if you really want to. Do you really want to?” He teased as he turned her and walked out towards the car his hand on her shoulder. “Oh yes please Granddad can we. PLEASE!” she asked, looking up at him. He smiled back down at her then lifted her into the car. “We should have changed you into a pair of jeans.” He said secretly thanking his stars that she’d stayed dressed in that tiny little almost mini skirt, he liked to watch her try to dig. He let his wrinkly old hands linger on her bare leg for a bit after her boots were all on. “What shall we do first Granddad?” She asked.

Book I Didn t Get Where I Am Today

Download or read book I Didn t Get Where I Am Today written by David Nobbs and published by Random House. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a small boy David Nobbs survived the Second World War unscathed, until his bedroom ceiling fell on him when the last bomb to be dropped on Britain by the Germans landed near his home. It was the nearest he came to the war, but National Service would later make him one of Britain's most reluctant soldiers. It was an unforgettable and often unpleasant experience. As a struggling writer, David was catapulted into the thrilling world of satire at the BBC when he rang THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS with a joke and got through to David Frost, who sent a taxi for the joke. He never looked back. His greatness as a modern comic writer was confirmed by the publication of THE FALL AND RISE OF REGINALD PERRIN, which he adapted into the immensely successful television series that has entered the fabric of British cultural life, through phrases, images and brilliant humour. A mesmerising, beautifully told tale of life in writing and comedy, I DIDN'T GET WHERE I AM TODAY is the hilarious, poignant and very personal story of David Nobbs' life, which also describes some of the most famous comedians of the last century and captures a golden age of British television.

Book Modes of Thought in Western and Non Western Societies

Download or read book Modes of Thought in Western and Non Western Societies written by Ruth Finnegan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-10-04 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a basic difference in thinking between Western and non-Western societies? This long-debated yet highly topical problem forms the central question to which distinguished contributors in the fields of psychology, linguistics, history, and sociology and, more particularly, of social anthropology and philosophy, address themselves in this interdisciplinary collection. They are: Barry Barnes, Benjamin N. Colby and Michael Cole, Ruth Finnegan, Ernest Gellner, Robin Horton, J. M. Ita, Hilary Jenkins, Steven Lukes, Nobuhiro Nagashima, S. J. Tambiah, W. H. Whiteley, and Sybil Wolfram. The central ideas of this classic work are reformulated and refined in the various contributions with different possible dichotomies discussed such as: 'traditional/modern', 'industrial/non industrial', or 'scientific/non-scientific', and 'thinking,' analyzed in terms of its thought processes, content, logic or social background. The material in the book, which is dedicated to Sir Edward Evans-Pritchard, falls within the general area of the comparative sociology of knowledge, and will thus particularly interest philosophers, social anthropologists, and sociologists. The volume is however conceived in an interdisciplinary spirit and will be of interest to anyone seriously concerned to examine the nature of thinking in our own and other societies.
