Cubism was perhaps the supreme instance of this; as Czech art historian Miroslav Lamac famously commented, around 1912, "Prague became the city of Cubism with Cubist apartment blocks full of Cubist flats furnished with Cubist furniture. The inhabitants could drink coffee from Cubist cups, put flowers in Cubist vases, keep the time on Cubist clocks, light their rooms with Cubist lamps and read books in Cubist type." Today a rich literature has arisen on Czech Cubist painting and architecture, but the role of book design in Czech Cubism has not been the subject of a study. This wonderful volume collects book designs by Frantisek Kysela, V. H. Brunner, Jaroslav Benda and Method Kaláb, tracing its impact on typography in early 1920s Czechoslovakia.

This modern edition contains a massive collection of over 50 different works by Gertrude Stein. In addition to the daring and cheeky "Miss Furr and Miss Skeene," this revitalized edition contains many of her most radical and influential works. There is "Ada," one of Stein's many word portraits of famous personages, this one written of Alice B. Toklas. There is "Every Afternoon: A Dialogue," a conversation between two unnamed people highlighting the writer's playful, often humorous style. Also included is "Sacred Emily," in which the reader finds Stein's most often quoted line, "Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose," a line that employs her trademark use of repetitive language to express that things are what they are, but at the same time, so much more. In Stein's view, the simple naming of a thing already invokes the imagery and emotions associated with it-the writer does not need to manipulate the word any further.

(Gertrude Stein) Gertrude Stein has been an extraordinary person in many respects: it is not only her biographical background that is impressing and which shows what a strong and self-confident woman she was, such as her foundation of the American Fund for French Wounded during the First World War. Also by her work Tender Buttons, written in 1914, she has successfully created an entirely new kind of literature. Yet her playful, but at the same time not immediately understandable way of writing is considered as hermetic, being pretty difficult to read. This is why Sprigge writes that “[b]oth as artist and as woman Gertrude Stein has always been a subject of controversy. Ridiculed on the one hand she is acclaimed on the other as the creator of a literary style that has set its mark in twentiethcentury prose and poetry...” (xiii). This style has largely been influenced by cubist painting and her friendship with Pablo Picasso. Tender Buttons is thus of course an homage to him, and there are many similarities between cubism and Stein's writing. However, it is the aim of this essay to point out both in what way the art movement contributed to her work, and how she is at the same time able to overcome this male tradition by stepping away and changing it.
