Book Sociological Thinking in Music Education

Download or read book Sociological Thinking in Music Education written by Carol Frierson-Campbell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sociological Thinking in Music Education presents new ideas about music teaching and learning as important social, political, economic, ecological, and cultural ways of being. At the book's heart is the intersection between theory and practice where readers gain glimpses of intriguing social phenomena as lived through music learning and teaching. The vital roles played by music and music education in various societies around the world are illustrated through pivotal intersections between music education and sociology: community, schooling, and issues of decolonization. In this book, emerging as well as established scholars mobilize the links between applied sociology, music, education, and music education in ways that intersect the scholarly and the personal. These interdisciplinary vantage points fulfil the book's overarching aim to move beyond mere descriptions of what is, by analyzing how social inequalities and inequities, conflict and control, and power can be understood in and through music teaching and learning at both individual and collective levels. The result is not only encountering new ideas regarding the social construction of music education practices in specific places, but also seeing and hearing familiar ones in fresh ways. Digital assets enable readers to meet the authors and the points of their inquiry via various audiovisual media, including videos, a documentary music film, and multi-lingual video précis for each chapter in English as well as in each author's language of origin.

Book Venezuelan Bust Baseball Boom

Download or read book Venezuelan Bust Baseball Boom written by Milton H. Jamail and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though Venezuela is sandwiched between two soccer-mad countries Brazil and Colombia baseball is its national pastime and passion. Yet until the late 1980s few professional teams actively scouted and developed players there. This book is about the man who changed all that and brought Venezuela into Major League Baseball in a major way. While other teams were looking to the Dominican Republic for new talent, Houston Astros' scout Andrés Reiner saw an untapped niche in Venezuela. Venezuelan Bust, Baseball Boom recounts how, over the next fifteen years, Reiner signed nearly one hundred players, nineteen of whom reached the majors. The stories of these players among them Bobby Abreu, Johán Santana, Melvin Mora, Carlos Guillén, and Freddy García are interwoven with Reiner s own, together creating a fascinating portrait of a curious character in the annals of sports and a richly textured picture of the opening of Venezuela as baseball s new frontier. Countless interviews broaden and deepen the story s insights into how the scouting system works, how Reiner worked within it, and how his efforts have affected the sport of baseball in Venezuela and the significance of Venezuela in the world of Major League Baseball.

Download or read book Appearances Matter written by Tim Allender and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The visual turn recovers new pasts. With education as its theme, this book seeks to present a body of reflections that questions a certain historicism and renovates historiographical debate about how to conceptualize and use images and artifacts in educational history, in the process presenting new themes and methods for researchers. Images are interrogated as part of regimes of the visible, of a history of visual technologies and visual practices. Considering the socio-material quality of the image, the analysis moves away from the use of images as mere illustrations of written arguments, and takes seriously the question of the life and death of artifacts – that is, their particular historicity. Questioning the visual and material evidence in this way means considering how, when, and in which régime of the visible it has come to be considered as a source, and what this means for the questions contemporary researchers might ask.
