Book Pan American Climate Study PACS

Download or read book Pan American Climate Study PACS written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two surface moorings were recovered during R/V Melville cruise PACS03MV in tile eastern equatorial Pacific as part of the Pan American Climate Study (PACS). PACS is a NOAA-funded study with the goal of investigating links between sea-surface temperature variability in the tropical oceans near the Americas and climate over the American continents. The two moorings were deployed near 125 deg W, spanning the strong meridional sea surface temperature gradient associated with the cold tongue south of the equator and the warmer ocean north of the equator, near the northernmost, summer location of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. The moored array was deployed to improve tile understanding of air-sea fluxes and of the processes that control the evolution of the sea surface temperature field in the region. Two surface moorings, located at 3 deg S, 125 deg W and 10 deg N, 125 deg W, belonging to the Upper Ocean Processes (UOP) Group at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), were recovered after being on station for eight months. This was the second setting of the two moorings that had been redeployed from tile University of Washington's R/V Thomas Thompson cruise number 73. The buoys of the two WHOI moorings were each equipped with meteorological instrumentation, including a Vector Averaging Wind Recorder (VAWR), and an Improved METeorological (IMET) system. The WHOI moorings also carried Vector Measuring Current Meters, single point temperature recorders, and conductivity and temperature recorders located in the upper 200 meters of the mooring line. In addition to the instrumentation noted above, a variety of other instruments, including an acoustic current meter, acoustic doppler current meters, bio-optical instrument packages and an acoustic rain gauge, were deployed during the PACS field program. This report describes, in a general manner, the work that took place during R/V Melville cruise PACS03MV.

Book Our Changing Planet

Download or read book Our Changing Planet written by Fred T. Mackenzie and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a general, interdisciplinary discussion of global environmental change oriented toward the non-specialist in science. The unifying theme of the book is consideration of aspects of both natural and human-induced global environmental change. The two part organization according to this distinction allows for easy reading on specific topics. This book is useful for anyone interested in learning more about Earth's systems.

Book Stranded Assets and the Environment

Download or read book Stranded Assets and the Environment written by Ben Caldecott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the work of leading researchers and practitioners from a range of disciplines, including economic geography, economics, economic history, finance, law, and public policy, this edited collection provides a comprehensive assessment of stranded assets and the environment, covering the fundamental issues and debates, including climate change and societal responses to environmental change, as well as its origins and theoretical basis. The volume provides much needed clarity as the discourse on stranded assets gathers further momentum. In addition to drawing on scholarly contributions, there are chapters from practitioners and analysts to provide a range of critical perspectives. While chapters have been written as important standalone contributions, the book is intended to systematically take the reader through the key dimensions of stranded assets as a topic of research inquiry and practice. The work adopts a broad based social science perspective for setting out what stranded assets are, why they are relevant, and how they might inform the decision-making of firms, investors, policymakers, and regulators. The topic of stranded assets is inherently multi-disciplinary, cross-sectoral, and multi-jurisdictional and the volume reflects this diversity. This book will be of great relevance to scholars, practitioners and policymakers with an interest in include economics, business and development studies, climate policy and environmental studies in general.

Book Program VSMOKE users Manual

Download or read book Program VSMOKE users Manual written by Leonidas G. Lavdas and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a users manual for VSMOKE, a computer program for predicting the smoke and dry weather visibility impact of a single prescribed fire at several downwind locations. VSMOKE is a FORTRAN 77 program that depands on the input in file VSMOKE.IPT to generate output in file VSMOKE.OUT. VSMOKE is based on steady-state Gaussian plume modeling principles compatible with those used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. VSMOKE is uniquely tailored as a plume model for a low to moderate intensity ground fire as an emission source.

Book Vegetation of the Glacier Lakes Ecosystem Experiments Site

Download or read book Vegetation of the Glacier Lakes Ecosystem Experiments Site written by Claudia M. Regan and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vegetation at the Glacier Lakes Ecosystem Experiment Site, a 600 ha research site at 3200 to 3500 m elevation in the Snowy Range of southeastern Wyoming, was categorized and described from an intensive sampling of species abundances. A total of 304 vascular plant taxa were identified through collection and herbarium documentation. Plots with tree species were separated from those without tree species for ordination and classification analyses. Detrended correspondence analysis was used to order plots along major axes of composition variation, which are inferred moisture and topographic gradients. Cluster analysis was used to categorize plots based on composition similarity. The resulting groups were named according to species dominants. We identified and described in detail 4 meadow, 4 thicket or scrub, 3 krummholz, and 2 forest plant associations.
