Book Probes and Tags to Study Biomolecular Function

Download or read book Probes and Tags to Study Biomolecular Function written by Lawrence W. Miller and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-09-02 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only resource to systematically review current experimental methods, this handy reference enables researchers to select the best solution for their experimental problems. For each method covered, the book provides step-by-step protocols, illustrated by typical research applications. After an initial section on probing the lipid bilayer, the text moves on to discuss probing proteins -- including membrane proteins -- and nucleic acids. The first single publication to incorporate chemical markers, fluorescent probes and genetic tags allows a well-informed comparison of different solutions for the same problem in molecular analytics.

Book Fatigue Mechanical Behaviors of Rock Backfill Composites Laboratory Study

Download or read book Fatigue Mechanical Behaviors of Rock Backfill Composites Laboratory Study written by Yu Wang and published by Scientific Research Publishing, Inc. USA. This book was released on 2024-07-18 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as a reference book for advanced graduate students and re-search engineers in rock mechanics related to mining engineering. The cemented tailings backfill (CTB) technique is widely used in deep underground mining, since this tech-nique is effective to support surrounding rock, control rockburst, reduce ground sub-sistence, and reduce surface disposal of tailings. Plenty of investigations have been attempted to experimentally or numerically evaluate the strength of CTB with different components (e.g., mixture of cement, tailings, fly ash, blast furnace slag, etc.) to ensure the geological stability when extracting adjacent stopes. After extracting ore from stopes, CTB is filled in the gob, stress redistribution occurs in the backfill stope and surrounding rocks. Due to the elasticity mismatch of these two kinds of material, differential de-formation occurs and they both resist the overburden pressure and deformation. As a result, the interactions between the surrounding rock and tailing backfill material have significant role in maintaining the long-term stability of mine stopes. Apart from the investigations on the static mechanical behaviors of rock- backfill composited backfill (RBCS) material, the RBCS in the stope are also exposed to disturbed stress (e.g., blast vibration, excavation, earthquake, etc.), and the disturbed stress is usually equivalent to cyclic or fatigue loads. As a result, investigations on rock-backfill interactions subjected to the disturbed stress are critical and significant to maintain the long- term stability of mine stopes.

Book Cellular and Molecular Methods in Neuroscience Research

Download or read book Cellular and Molecular Methods in Neuroscience Research written by Adalberto Merighi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-14 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are numerous books on cellular and molecular protocols for general use in cell biology but very few are exclusively devoted to neurobiology. This book fills this gap and explains in a clear and consistent manner, some of the more commonly used protocols in neuroscience research. Each chapter is written by either the person who invented the procedure or an expert in the field. The format is uniform: "Overview," "Background," "Protocols," and "results and discussion." Each protocol begins with the principle of the technique, studies in cell culture, materials and reagents, and, lastly, step-by-step outline of the procedure itself. This highly practical book is also well illustrated (with 17 four color plates) to make the concepts and procedures easy to understand and perform.

Book Nuclear Weapons After the Comprehensive Test Ban

Download or read book Nuclear Weapons After the Comprehensive Test Ban written by Eric H. Arnett and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After more than three decades of on-off negotiations, a CTB treaty was signed in 1996. This book describes how the CTB will affect nuclear programmes and decision-making in the nuclear weapon states, the threshold states and the non-nuclear weapon states of proliferation concern. While some states will maintain their nuclear weapon arsenals and options under the CTB - and some weapon modernization may be undertaken - the CTB will foreclose a number of technologies and will probably be signed and ratified. Further the CTB will codify a norm against nuclear modernization and strengthen the norm against nuclear proliferation in a way that reinforces other efforts to restrict nuclear activities. The book examines the significance of treaty provisions that may be intended to accommodate existing nuclear weapon stockpiles or options and how these provisions may function as modernization or proliferation loopholes. It concludes with a review of practical steps that can be taken - both unilaterally and multilaterally - to further strengthen these norms and reinforce the CTB regime.

Book Item Banking Interactive Testing and Self Assessment

Download or read book Item Banking Interactive Testing and Self Assessment written by Dieudonne A. Leclercq and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessment has long been recognized as a key feature in learning efficacy, especially through formative evaluation. Item banking, the storage and classification of test items, is an essential part of systematic assessment. This volume is based on a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held as part of the Special Programme on Advanced Educational Technology. The workshop brought together scholars from around the world to discuss and critically analyze the issues and problems associated with Subjective Probability Measurement (SPM) or the more generic research area called self-assessment. Recent advances in computer technology (expert systems, interactive video disks, and hypermedia) along with the developing sophistication of self-assessment scoring systems based on SPM made this conference particularly important and timely. The book is divided into three main parts: - The input: item banking and hypermedia - The process: subjective probabilities - The output: teaching and learning feedbacks. In summary, although SPM is a difficult theoretical concept for most educators to comprehend, the sophisticated nature of modern computer systems coupled with comprehensive formative and summative evaluation and self-assessment systems make SPM transparent to the user.
