Book Modelling Coastal Sea Processes Proceedings Of The International Ocean And Atmosphere Pacific Conference

Download or read book Modelling Coastal Sea Processes Proceedings Of The International Ocean And Atmosphere Pacific Conference written by John Noye and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-11-26 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains updated, reviewed versions of the best papers on “Modelling Coastal Sea Processes” presented at the International Ocean and Atmosphere Pacific Conference, held in Adelaide, South Australia, on 23-27 October 1995. The articles were selected on both scientific merit and usefulness to coastal engineers, physical oceanographers and marine biologists. They cover a range of topics including the modelling of tides and storm surges (especially inundation due to surges), the analysis of modelled or recorded data to permit prediction of tide heights over tidal flats and tidal currents in the presence of coastal eddies, and the modelling of dispersion of fish larvae from spawning grounds to coastal nurseries. Computational techniques are emphasised in line with modern applications, but some analytical techniques have also been included.

Book Iterative Methods for Linear and Nonlinear Equations

Download or read book Iterative Methods for Linear and Nonlinear Equations written by C. T. Kelley and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear and nonlinear systems of equations are the basis for many, if not most, of the models of phenomena in science and engineering, and their efficient numerical solution is critical to progress in these areas. This is the first book to be published on nonlinear equations since the mid-1980s. Although it stresses recent developments in this area, such as Newton-Krylov methods, considerable material on linear equations has been incorporated. This book focuses on a small number of methods and treats them in depth. The author provides a complete analysis of the conjugate gradient and generalized minimum residual iterations as well as recent advances including Newton-Krylov methods, incorporation of inexactness and noise into the analysis, new proofs and implementations of Broyden's method, and globalization of inexact Newton methods. Examples, methods, and algorithmic choices are based on applications to infinite dimensional problems such as partial differential equations and integral equations. The analysis and proof techniques are constructed with the infinite dimensional setting in mind and the computational examples and exercises are based on the MATLAB environment.

Book Optimal Control of Age structured Populations in Economy Demography and the Environment

Download or read book Optimal Control of Age structured Populations in Economy Demography and the Environment written by Raouf Boucekkine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers a wide range of topics within mathematical modelling and the optimization of economic, demographic, technological and environmental phenomena. Each chapter is written by experts in their field and represents new advances in modelling theory and practice. These essays are exemplary of the fruitful interaction between theory and practice when exploring global and local changes. The unifying theme of the book is the use of mathematical models and optimization methods to describe age-structured populations in economy, demography, technological change, and the environment. Emphasis is placed on deterministic dynamic models that take age or size structures, delay effects, and non-standard decision variables into account. In addition, the contributions deal with the age structure of assets, resources, and populations under study. Interdisciplinary modelling has enormous potential for discovering new insights in global and regional development. Optimal Control of Age-structured Populations in Economy, Demography, and the Environment is a rich and excellent source of information on state-of-the-art modelling expertise and references. The book provides the necessary mathematical background for readers from different areas, such as applied sciences, management sciences and operations research, which helps guide the development of practical models. As well as this the book also surveys the current practice in applied modelling and looks at new research areas for a general mathematical audience. This book will be of interest primarily to researchers, postgraduate students, as well as a wider scientific community, including those focussing on the subjects of applied mathematics, environmental sciences, economics, demography, management, and operations research.

Book Algorithms for Continuous Optimization

Download or read book Algorithms for Continuous Optimization written by E. Spedicato and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Algorithms for continuous optimiza tion: the state of the art" was held September 5-18, 1993, at II Ciocco, Barga, Italy. It was attended by 75 students (among them many well known specialists in optimiza tion) from the following countries: Belgium, Brasil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Rumania, Spain, Turkey, UK, USA, Venezuela. The lectures were given by 17 well known specialists in the field, from Brasil, China, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Sweden, UK, USA. Solving continuous optimization problems is a fundamental task in computational mathematics for applications in areas of engineering, economics, chemistry, biology and so on. Most real problems are nonlinear and can be of quite large size. Devel oping efficient algorithms for continuous optimization has been an important field of research in the last 30 years, with much additional impetus provided in the last decade by the availability of very fast and parallel computers. Techniques, like the simplex method, that were already considered fully developed thirty years ago have been thoroughly revised and enormously improved. The aim of this ASI was to present the state of the art in this field. While not all important aspects could be covered in the fifty hours of lectures (for instance multiob jective optimization had to be skipped), we believe that most important topics were presented, many of them by scientists who greatly contributed to their development.

Book Photochemistry in Microheterogeneous Systems

Download or read book Photochemistry in Microheterogeneous Systems written by K Kalyanasundaram and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photochemistry in Microheterogeneous Systems provides an introduction to the subject of photochemistry in microheterogeneous systems. Emphasis is on the unimolecular and bimolecular reactions of electronically excited molecules in non-homogeneous media, as well as the application of photophysical and photochemical processes and techniques to the study of various microheterogeneous systems of chemical and biological interest, from normal and inverted micelles to vesicles and liposomes, monolayers, black lipid membranes, and liquid crystalline solvents. This monograph is comprised of 10 chapters and begins with an overview of microheterogeneous systems; excited-state processes and reactions; photochemistry in microheterogeneous systems; and structural and dynamical aspects of micellar aggregates. The discussion then turns to micellar photophysics and photochemistry, with emphasis on singlet-state and triplet-state reactions. Subsequent chapters focus on photoprocesses in a variety of microheterogeneous systems such as reversed micelles, microemulsions, lipids, surfactant vesicles, and liposomes; polymers, polyelectrolytes, and ion-exchange membranes; and molecular inclusion complexes. The final chapter is devoted to the photochemistry of molecules in the adsorbed state. This text is intended for graduate students and practicing chemists.
