Book excerpt: Instruments of Planning: Tensions and Challenges for more Equitable and Sustainable Cities critically explores planning’s instrumentality to deliver important social and environmental outcomes in neoliberal planning landscapes. Because each instrument is unique and may be tailored to its own jurisdictional needs, Instruments of Planning is a compendium of case studies from urban regions in Australia, Canada, the United States and Europe, providing readers with a collection that critically challenges the role and potential of planning instruments and instrumentality across a range of contexts. Instruments of Planning captures the political, institutional, and economic challenges that confront planning. It examines planning instruments designed to assist with strategic planning and implementation, and considers the role that technology plays in unpacking and understanding complexity in planning. Written by Rebecca Leshinsky and Crystal Legacy of RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, this book fills the gap in planning theory about the instrumentality of planning in the neoliberal urban context. It is essential reading for students, urban researchers, policy analysts and planning practitioners.

In the end, Crystal's trip through the Crystal Kingdom is a captivating story of growth, leadership, and adventure. It shows how powerful it is to learn, find new things, and want to make the world a better place. Chapter 1: The Mysterious Chart Crystal was a brave and interested girl. People knew her for having endless energy and a strong desire to try new things. She liked finding the little known places in Sparkle Town and imagined herself as a great adventurer finding new lands. She had no idea that her biggest adventure was about to start in the dark, quiet corners of her grandmother's attic, not in the big, open world outside. People in Sparkle Village are friendly and know each other. The streets are always full of laughter and the wonderful smell of flowers. Crystal went to the attic when she went to see her grandmother. It was full of old trunks, dusty books, and stories from the past. Crystal found an old, worn-out map in the attic, among the lost items. But this wasn't any map; it was dirty and full of secrets, and the rough edges told stories of the past. The grandmother of Crystal came up to her and took the map in her soft hands, saying, "This is the map of the Crystal Kingdom." Her voice was quiet and cracked, like old book pages. Crystal's happiness knew no bounds when she found the Crystal Kingdom. She had heard stories about this beautiful and mysterious place where the rivers sparkled like diamonds and the trees grew crystals instead of leaves, but she always thought it was just a story made up to make kids feel good before bed. She now had a map in her hand that showed exactly where this land was. She felt a level of excitement she had never felt before at the thought of exploring the Crystal Kingdom. "It's full of mysteries and wonders," her grandmother said with a smile. Crystal's mind was like a rocket launchpad, full of vivid images of sparkling lakes and shining woods. She knew then that she had to go see it for herself, walk its ways, and find out what it was hiding. Crystal chose to go on the biggest adventure of her life because she was brave and had the support of her grandma. Even though she knew it wouldn't be easy—there would be obstacles to overcome, puzzles to solve, and threats to face—the chance to find out what was going on in the Crystal Kingdom was too tempting to pass up. What she held in her hands wasn't just a piece of paper; it was a key to a magical world and an adventure that would change her life forever. As she went, the map showed her hidden things about the place it was showing her that only Crystal, the brave traveler, could find. Taking the map as a guide and her sense of adventure with her, Crystal left Sparkle Town and went to a place she had never imagined. Chapter 2: The First Step. With the mysterious map in her hand, she got closer to the border of the Crystal Kingdom. Her heart was rushing with excitement and a little fear as she took the first step beyond the invisible line that separated her normal world from the magical one that lay ahead. As the sun came up and cast its golden light over Sparkle Town, Crystal was already on her way. She had her backpack strapped tightly and full of everything she would need for her trip. The only things she knew about that world were in her dreams and the stories her grandmother told her. Today was her big adventure into the unknown. Her walk seemed to have taken her into a jewel-encrusted forest, with each tree more beautiful than the last. The leaves rustled in the light breeze, making a melody that seemed to greet her. Crystal knew she was in a different world as soon as she stepped foot on the Crystal Kingdom's ground. The trees around her sparkled and shone. The crystals on their trunks and branches made them look like stars in the sun. Crystal was stunned by how beautiful this magical land was. The rushing rivers, which were the most beautiful shades of blue she had ever seen, made her eyes wide with awe. It looked like the sky had melted into the ground, creating streams of liquid sapphire that wound through the farmland. These streams reflected the light and made dance patterns on the plants in the area. Her words were soft and polite, a grateful acknowledgment of the beauty around her. Crystal could tell right away that this trip would be different from all the others because the trees seemed to lean in and listen to her steps, and the rivers shouted welcome songs. The air itself was magical, calling her to see what was over the next hill and around the next corner. It was just a bit of old paper at first, but now the map is the key to a world full of wonders she could never have imagined. She was here to find out what the Crystal Kingdom was all about. It was living and full of magic and beauty. Crystal understood as the trip went on that it was more than just an investigation. It was a journey to learn not only about the mysteries of the Crystal Kingdom but also about her own strength and power. With each step, she felt like she was getting better as a person and as a traveler. It was the sapphire rivers and diamond trees in the Crystal Kingdom that taught her that magic exists and that she could find it. Crystal set out on her trip with her heart full of hope and her eyes wide open, ready to see the amazing things that lay ahead in this magical world. Chapter 3: The Tree Can Talk In the middle of the Crystal Kingdom, where the sun was dancing through the branches of shiny trees, Crystal's trip took a sudden turn. As she went deeper into the magical forest, she came across a tree that was unlike any other she had seen. The leaves were as clear as glass, giving off a soft glow when they caught the light and making colorful patterns on the ground below. The most interesting thing about this tree, though, was that it could talk. When she heard a voice in the bush, she was shocked and looked around, but the voice was coming from the tree itself. It was like the wind was whispering secrets through the trees because the voice was so smooth and musical. "If you want to find the Crystal Heart, you have to learn to listen," the tree said in a soft voice that was as old as the country itself. Crystal paid close attention as the tree's words hit her. It wasn't about hearing with her ears, but with her heart, to hear the world's unspoken thoughts and screams. The Crystal Heart is a mythical diamond that is said to hold the magic of the Crystal Kingdom. Crystal's meeting with the talking tree was a turning point in her journey. She realized that she could only get through the Crystal Kingdom and find its darkest secrets if she had empathy—the power to understand and feel other people's emotions and the sense to make decisions based on that understanding. The tree, with its ancient knowledge and peaceful presence, taught her that being a leader meant listening, caring, and making choices that were good for everyone in the country, not just herself. Crystal kept thinking about what the tree said as she continued her journey. It taught her to pay more attention to the sounds of nature, like the rustling of leaves, the babbling of brooks, and the whispers of the wind, so she could find beauty in the quiet moments and stories in the animals' eyes. Her quest became a journey of discovery that took her to the depths of her own heart as well as the kingdom's riches as a result of her newfound empathy and understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dark Truth is the follow-up to Untold Truth (Matador, 2012) and the second book in a trilogy. ‘There is something wrong with the crystals,’ the message said. Jane and Mark travel to a friend’s mine in Africa. They realise that the problem with the crystals stems from Mark's past – a past he has been running away from. “My men took the quartz laser wands and began cleaning the dirt from them. They didn’t notice that inside the quartz points, there were black veins. I wasn’t too bothered about it; the crystals will sell for a better price if there is something unusual within them.” “So what’s got you so worried?” “I got a call the next morning to say that all three men were off ill and one had been taken to hospital.” With the help of a bushman elder, they are led to search ancient paintings and myths for clues to the crystals’ salvation. What they discover makes Mark draw on the skills he had vowed to never use again, and Jane has to come to terms with the consequences of her actions. The Dark Truth will appeal to fans of both crime and spiritual novels, as well as anyone working in complementary therapy. Author Ellen weaves her novels with threads of spirituality, resulting in books that take readers on an adventure whilst also exposing them to life teachings.
