Book excerpt: MANHATTAN IS UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT. THEY’RE NOT FROM AROUND HERE. Welcome to the Big Apple, son. Welcome to the city that never sleeps: invaded by monstrous fusions of meat and machinery, defended by a private army that makes Blackwater look like the Red Cross, ravaged by a disfiguring plague that gifts its victims with religious rapture while it eats them alive. You’ve been thrown into this meat grinder without warning, without preparation, without a clue. Your whole squad was mowed down the moment they stepped onto the battlefield. And the chorus of voices whispering in your head keeps saying that all of this is on you: that you and you alone might be able to turn the whole thing around if you only knew what the hell was going on. You’d like to help. Really you would. But it’s not just the aliens that are gunning for you. Your own kind hunts you as a traitor, and your job might be a bit easier if you didn’t have the sneaking suspicion they could be right. . . .

Book Modern Mythology and Science

Download or read book Modern Mythology and Science written by Dan Brasoveanu and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern physics has degenerated into mythology. Quantum mechanics (QM) is based on the assumption that "elementary" particles are truly fundamental. This assumption has been invalidated by numerous experiments. By interaction with other particles, quarks and other components of "elementary" particles are pulled apart or squeezed together. Due to such deformations, the complex structures called "elementary" particles accumulate internal energy, which is neglected in the entire Quantum Mechanics literature. Double slit experiments do not justify the abandonment of Classical Physics and the creation of Quantum Mechanics. The interference patterns, which supposedly demonstrate the unique nature of "elementary" particles, are faithfully reproduced with common objects. Correctly applied i.e., without neglecting internal energy, Classical Physics provides a deterministic and unitary description of virtually all quantum phenomena. Classical Physics also explains relativistic effects, i.e., mass increase, length contraction and time dilation without recourse to particular hypotheses like the existence of aether. The components of "elementary" particles are bound by cohesion forces propagating through quanta. The energy of quanta increases with particle velocity according to the Doppler Effect. As a result, the relativistic energy and mass of an "elementary" particle are proportional to the Lorentz factor. This mass increase causes length contraction and time dilation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The secrets of light — Your pathway to a state of presence Seeking a state of presence: The most important things in life are our health and happiness. Yet most of us are neither healthy nor happy. We have been led to believe that if we think ahead and make the right choices, we can manifest our dreams. Yet despite our best efforts, we still have more disease and discontent than ever before. Is it possible that our essential ideas about life are flawed? Can we learn how to get into the zone or a flow state? Is light the key to finding a state of presence? Living in the light: We are all aware of the impact of sunlight on a plant’s growth and development. But few of us realize that a plant actually “sees” where light is emanating from and positions itself to be in optimal alignment with it. This phenomenon, however, is not just occurring in the plant kingdom — humans are also fundamentally directed by light. The intersection of science and spirituality: In Luminous Life, Dr. Jacob Israel Liberman integrates scientific research, clinical practice, and direct experience to demonstrate how the luminous intelligence we call light effortlessly guides us toward health, contentment, and a life filled with purpose. If you have read Barbara Brennan’s Hands of Light or Light Emerging, you’re going to love Jacob Liberman’s Luminous Life.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Discover the game-changing theory of the cycles of history and what past generations can teach us about living through times of upheaval—with deep insights into the roles that Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials have to play—now with a new preface by Neil Howe. First comes a High, a period of confident expansion. Next comes an Awakening, a time of spiritual exploration and rebellion. Then comes an Unraveling, in which individualism triumphs over crumbling institutions. Last comes a Crisis—the Fourth Turning—when society passes through a great and perilous gate in history. William Strauss and Neil Howe will change the way you see the world—and your place in it. With blazing originality, The Fourth Turning illuminates the past, explains the present, and reimagines the future. Most remarkably, it offers an utterly persuasive prophecy about how America’s past will predict what comes next. Strauss and Howe base this vision on a provocative theory of American history. The authors look back five hundred years and uncover a distinct pattern: Modern history moves in cycles, each one lasting about the length of a long human life, each composed of four twenty-year eras—or “turnings”—that comprise history’s seasonal rhythm of growth, maturation, entropy, and rebirth. Illustrating this cycle through a brilliant analysis of the post–World War II period, The Fourth Turning offers bold predictions about how all of us can prepare, individually and collectively, for this rendezvous with destiny.

Worldwide, boys are 50 percent less likely than girls to meet basic proficiency in reading, math, and science. It's a crisis of mental health. ADHD is on the rise. And as boys become young men, their suicide rates go from equal to girls to six times that of young women. It's a crisis of fathering. Boys are growing up with less-involved fathers and are more likely to drop out of school, drink, do drugs, become delinquent, and end up in prison. It's a crisis of purpose. Boys' old sense of purpose—being a warrior, a leader, or a sole breadwinner—are fading. Many bright boys are experiencing a "purpose void," feeling alienated, withdrawn, and addicted to immediate gratification. So, what is The Boy Crisis? A comprehensive blueprint for what parents, teachers, and policymakers can do to help our sons become happier, healthier men, and fathers and leaders worthy of our respect.

Book The Happiest Baby on the Block

Download or read book The Happiest Baby on the Block written by Harvey Karp, M.D. and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2008-11-19 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfect for expecting parents who want to provide a soothing home for the newest member of their family, The Happiest Baby on the Block, the national bestseller by respected pediatrician and child development expert Dr. Harvey Karp, is a revolutionary method for calming a crying infant and promoting healthy sleep from day one. In perhaps the most important parenting book of the decade, Dr. Harvey Karp reveals an extraordinary treasure sought by parents for centuries --an automatic “off-switch” for their baby’s crying. No wonder pediatricians across the country are praising him and thousands of Los Angeles parents, from working moms to superstars like Madonna and Pierce Brosnan, have turned to him to learn the secrets for making babies happy. Never again will parents have to stand by helpless and frazzled while their poor baby cries and cries. Dr. Karp has found there IS a remedy for colic. “I share with parents techniques known only to the most gifted baby soothers throughout history …and I explain exactly how they work.” In a innovative and thought-provoking reevaluation of early infancy, Dr. Karp blends modern science and ancient wisdom to prove that newborns are not fully ready for the world when they are born. Through his research and experience, he has developed four basic principles that are crucial for understanding babies as well as improving their sleep and soothing their senses: ·The Missing Fourth Trimester: as odd as it may sound, one of the main reasons babies cry is because they are born three months too soon. ·The Calming Reflex: the automatic reset switch to stop crying of any baby in the first few months of life. ·The 5 “S’s”: the simple steps (swaddling, side/stomach position, shushing, swinging and sucking) that trigger the calming reflex. For centuries, parents have tried these methods only to fail because, as with a knee reflex, the calming reflex only works when it is triggered in precisely the right way. Unlike other books that merely list these techniques Dr. Karp teaches parents exactly how to do them, to guide cranky infants to calm and easy babies to serenity in minutes…and help them sleep longer too. ·The Cuddle Cure: the perfect mix the 5 “S’s” that can soothe even the most colicky of infants. In the book, Dr. Karp also explains: What is colic? Why do most babies get much more upset in the evening? How can a parent calm a baby--in mere minutes? Can babies be spoiled? When should a parent of a crying baby call the doctor? How can a parent get their baby to sleep a few hours longer? Even the most loving moms and dads sometimes feel pushed to the breaking point by their infant’s persistent cries. Coming to the rescue, however, Dr. Karp places in the hands of parents, grandparents, and all childcare givers the tools they need to be able to calm their babies almost as easily as…turning off a light. From the Hardcover edition.

Book The Collector s Guide to Heavy Metal The seventies

Download or read book The Collector s Guide to Heavy Metal The seventies written by Martin Popoff and published by Apogee Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Collector's Guide To Heavy Metal" was a mammoth of a book crammed with 3700 reviews of metal records through the decades. It elicited much discussion, including close to 70 reviews at the book's Amazon page and counting. Now it is being split into three volumes focusing on the '70s, '80s and '90s respectively with an additional 700-800 reviews added to the 70's. In "The Collector's Guide To Heavy Metal -- Volume I: The Seventies", Martin crams the pages full of reviews and recollections of rarities and monster catalogues from 70s bands not covered in the seminal original tome. As well, many of the original reviews get complete overhauls as Martin re-evaluates the classics and adds trivia titbits that make these records come to life. Join Martin's Seventies Appreciation Society and check out dozens of bands and hundreds of albums you won't see covered in any other rock anthology. This indeed is the book that brings back to the printed page, long-lost acts that rocked hard for their times, bands that built the foundation for the mountainous heavy metal sound of today. Monster Records, the king at finding the super obscure stuff, have provided an exclusive CD sampler for which includes material from some or all of the following: Sorcery, Truth And Janey, Ultra, Cain, Poobah, Negative Space and Survivor.
