'Sea Monsters and Other Beasts of the Oceans' contains a collection of short stories that include 'A Matter of Fact' by Rudyard Kipling, 'The Monster of Lake LaMetrie' by Wardon Allan Curtis, 'A Tropical Horror' by William Hope Hodgson, and many other classic tales in the genre. Sea monsters hold a special place in the human imagination. Virtually every culture has at some point feared a creature of the deep, and to this day such tales have an enduring affect. True or not, these and other tales of creatures of the deep carry an almost irresistible allure. Short of taking a search party to Loch Ness, the stories which follow may well be the best method we have for getting to grips with how the symbol of the sea monster intersects with the human imagination, and even for envisioning oneself at the moment of encounter.

Book excerpt: Fear is primal. Instinctive. Unavoidable. And right now, there is something you fear--and you can feel it. Creeping up behind you. Lurking in the darkness that lives under your bed, or in your closet. A nameless dread. In Undercurrents: An Anthology of What Lies Beneath, twenty-three talented authors, including New York Times bestsellers Kevin J. Anderson, Rebecca Moesta, and Jody Lynn Nye, have stood on the shores of their psyches and looked out over the ocean of possibility and wondered "What lies beneath?" The sea creatures and sea monsters that answered their calls range from a giant kraken that rules the deepest ocean to the smallest puffer fish that creates intricate works of underwater art. Creatures of classic mythology--mermaids, sirens, and sea serpents--swim alongside more unusual beasts--underwater cats and singing whirlpools. These stories dive deep into the fears many of us face, including loss, abandonment, death, and physical, mental, or emotional danger. When the fears we keep buried beneath the surface rise up and threaten to consume, we must make a choice: conquer or be conquered. This anthology is the fourth volume produced by the alumni of the Superstars Writing Seminar, and all royalties benefit the Don Hodge Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Book The Country of the Blind and other Selected Stories

Download or read book The Country of the Blind and other Selected Stories written by H.G. Wells and published by ePenguin. This book was released on 2007-05-31 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbert George Wells was perhaps best known as the author of such classic works of science fiction as The Time Machine and War of the Worlds. But it was in his short stories, written when he was a young man embarking on a literary career, that he first explored the enormous potential of the scientific discoveries of the day. He described his stories as "a miscellany of inventions," yet his enthusiasm for science was tempered by an awareness of its horrifying destructive powers and the threat it could pose to the human race. A consummate storyteller, he made fantastic creatures and machines entirely believable; and, by placing ordinary men and women in extraordinary situations, he explored, with humor, what it means to be alive in a century of rapid scientific progress.
