Book Crypto Wars

    Book Details:
  • Author : Craig Jarvis
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2020-12-30
  • ISBN : 1000284867
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Crypto Wars written by Craig Jarvis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crypto wars have raged for half a century. In the 1970s, digital privacy activists prophesied the emergence of an Orwellian State, made possible by computer-mediated mass surveillance. The antidote: digital encryption. The U.S. government warned encryption would not only prevent surveillance of law-abiding citizens, but of criminals, terrorists, and foreign spies, ushering in a rival dystopian future. Both parties fought to defend the citizenry from what they believed the most perilous threats. The government tried to control encryption to preserve its surveillance capabilities; privacy activists armed citizens with cryptographic tools and challenged encryption regulations in the courts. No clear victor has emerged from the crypto wars. Governments have failed to forge a framework to govern the, at times conflicting, civil liberties of privacy and security in the digital age—an age when such liberties have an outsized influence on the citizen–State power balance. Solving this problem is more urgent than ever. Digital privacy will be one of the most important factors in how we architect twenty-first century societies—its management is paramount to our stewardship of democracy for future generations. We must elevate the quality of debate on cryptography, on how we govern security and privacy in our technology-infused world. Failure to end the crypto wars will result in societies sleepwalking into a future where the citizen–State power balance is determined by a twentieth-century status quo unfit for this century, endangering both our privacy and security. This book provides a history of the crypto wars, with the hope its chronicling sets a foundation for peace.

Book Cryptomania

  • Author : Andrew R Chow
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2024-08-06
  • ISBN : 1668038188
  • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book Cryptomania written by Andrew R Chow and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For fans of Bad Blood and Too Big to Fail, an explosive, page-turning account of one of the largest financial frauds in US history, chronicling the utopian promises, human collateral, and incineration of billions of dollars in the 2022 crypto crash, by Time magazine’s technology correspondent. As cryptocurrency rose in popularity during the pandemic, new converts bought into the idea that crypto would not only make them rich, but would usher in imminent revolutions across art, finance, politics, and gaming. Cryptocurrency caught the zeitgeist through figures like FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, who only two years later would be convicted of one of the most calamitous acts of financial fraud in US history. During his meteoric rise, Sam Bankman-Fried outflanked idealists in the movement like Vitalik Buterin, who sought to build fairer, more democratic systems through Ethereum. Bankman-Fried pursued a growth-obsessed, by-any-means approach to crypto, which proved seductive to those who just wanted to get rich. But this Silicon Valley-like approach also drove the creation of a spate of high-risk financial instruments that mirrored those of the 2008 financial crisis. Accused of misleading investors and mishandling funds, Bankman-Fried became a target of prosecutors. Now, Cryptomania unfolds the tumultuous twenty months inside this male-dominated, overhyped industry that led to its downfall. Drawing on exclusive reporting and an extensive network in the global NFT community, Andrew Chow chronicles the battle for crypto’s soul, and the human toll of its economic meltdown—from the conmen and eccentrics driving the bubble to the victims caught in its burst.

Book Cryptohistories

Download or read book Cryptohistories written by Alicja Bemben and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-27 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cryptohistories is a collection of essays which provides a meeting ground for historians and cultural scholars analysing discussions of cryptic discourses in history and in historical narratives with roots in the mysterious. The focus here is on history as a subjective narrative, as a conscious construct and as manipulation. Equally important for all the contributors brought together in this book is the mechanics of the rise, popularity and apparent necessity of such narrative strategies. The essays address a variety of issues revolving around the study of cryptic aspects of discourses, ranging from theoretical approaches to secretive narratives of history, cultural encoding and decoding of cryptohistories, microhistories focusing on historical mysteries, and mythicised pasts and processes of mythicization of the past, as well as histories and theories of chance and manipulation. Among its specific subjects Crytpohistories features discussions on the reasons why certain quasi-historical narratives do not reach the status of history; on conspiracy theories analysed from the perspective of contemporary video-games; on the paradoxes of truth and falsehood in history; on parasitology as a cryptohistorical discourse; on the codes of Victorian floriography; on cases of cross-dressing and sartorial camouflage; on the Vietnam War MIAs; on manipulations lying at the core of contemporary Bulgarian identity; on the search for a racial utopia in the American South; and on the fiction of Beryl Bainbridge as a form of cryptohistorical literature.

Download or read book Long Memory written by Vangerry Oldham and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Long Memory" traces the 'history' of a multi-racial family from 1492 to the 2000 Millennium. It is set against the backgrounds of Mexico, the Bahamas, America and England. The novel chronicles the five hundred year 'love' commitment of the main characters to a' love-partnership', a place and a people. Intertwined with the main 'love' theme are several other romantic affairs. In addition to 'telling stories', 'Long Memory' also makes observations on the human condition in contrasting cultures; and gives an unusual 'twist' to the classical microcosm/macrocosm equation. A multitude of characters: Arawak, Aztec, Amerindian, Colonial British, Modern British and Modern Bahamian interact smoothly and sympathetically as their individual histories evolve and interweave. The concept of 'Long Memory' - a personalization of 'folk memory' - gives continuity to the novel, and provides the 'springboard' for a surprise denouement.

Book Regulating the Crypto Economy

  • Author : Iris H-Y Chiu
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2021-10-21
  • ISBN : 1509935754
  • Pages : 365 pages

Download or read book Regulating the Crypto Economy written by Iris H-Y Chiu and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the building of a crypto economy as an alternative economic space and discusses how the crypto economy should be governed. The crypto economy is examined in its productive and financialised aspects, in order to distil the need for governance in this economic space. The author argues that it is imperative for regulatory policy to develop the economic governance of the blockchain-based business model, in order to facilitate economic mobilisation and wealth creation. The regulatory framework should cater for a new and unique enterprise organisational law and the fund-raising and financing of blockchain-based development projects. Such a regulatory framework is crucially enabling in nature and consistent with the tenets of regulatory capitalism. Further, the book acknowledges the rising importance of private monetary orders in the crypto economy and native payment systems that do not rely on conventional institutions for value transfer. A regulatory blueprint is proposed for governing such monetary orders as 'commons' governance. The rise of Decentralised Finance and other financial innovations in the crypto economy are also discussed, and the book suggests a framework for regulatory consideration in this dynamic landscape in order to meet a balance of public interest objectives and private interests. By setting out a reform agenda in relation to economic and financial governance in the crypto economy, this forward-looking work argues for the extension of 'regulatory capitalism' to this perceived 'wild west' of an alternative economic space. It advances the message that an innovative regulatory agenda is needed to account for the economically disruptive and technologically transformative developments brought about by the crypto economy.
