Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nephroma occultum (Cryptic Modest Lichen) is a member of the Nephromataceae (or Peltigeraceae) known to occur in Canada only in the humid, primarily old growth forests of British Columbia. It is a rounded, loosely appressed, foliose (leaf) lichen. This report provides species information such as description, biological and economic significance, distribution, environment and habitat characteristics, population biology, population ecology, land ownership and management responsibility, management practices and experience, evidence of threats to survival, and legal or other formal status. It goes on to offer an assessment of the status for the species and information sources.
Download or read book Lichens of North America written by Irwin M. Brodo and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lichens are a unique form of plant life, the product of a symbiotic association between an alga and a fungus. The beauty and importance of lichens have long been overlooked, despite their abundance and diversity in most parts of North America and elsewhere in the world. This stunning book--the first accessible and authoritative guidebook to lichens of the North American continent--fills the gap, presenting superb color photographs, descriptions, distribution maps, and keys for identifying the most common, conspicuous, or ecologically significant species. The book focuses on 805 foliose, fruticose, and crustose lichens (the latter rarely included in popular guidebooks) and presents information on another 700 species in the keys or notes; special attention is given to species endemic to North America. A comprehensive introduction discusses the biology, structure, uses, and ecological significance of lichens and is illustrated with 90 additional color photos and many line drawings. English names are provided for most species, and the book also includes a glossary that explains technical terms. This visually rich and informative book will open the eyes of nature lovers everywhere to the fascinating world of lichens.

Download or read book Temperate and Boreal Rainforests of the World written by Dominick A. DellaSala and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temperate rainforests are biogeographically unique. Compared to their tropical counterparts, temperate rainforests are rarer and are found disproportionately along coastlines. Because most temperate rainforests are marked by the intersection of marine, terrestrial, and freshwater systems, these rich ecotones are among the most productive regions on Earth. Globally, temperate rainforests store vast amounts of carbon, provide habitat for scores of rare and endemic species with ancient affinities, and sustain complex food-web dynamics. In spite of their global significance, however, protection levels for these ecosystems are far too low to sustain temperate rainforests under a rapidly changing global climate and ever expanding human footprint. Therefore, a global synthesis is needed to provide the latest ecological science and call attention to the conservation needs of temperate and boreal rainforests. A concerted effort to internationalize the plight of the world’s temperate and boreal rainforests is underway around the globe; this book offers an essential (and heretofore missing) tool for that effort. DellaSala and his contributors tell a compelling story of the importance of temperate and boreal rainforests that includes some surprises (e.g., South Africa, Iran, Turkey, Japan, Russia). This volume provides a comprehensive reference from which to build a collective vision of their future.
Download or read book The Lichens of British Columbia written by Trevor Goward and published by Ministry of Forests Research Program. This book was released on 1994 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual provides illustrated keys to all leaf and scale lichens known to occur in British Columbia. In total, 327 species are included, while 19 taxa are excluded from earlier accounts of the flora. Accompanying the keys are approximately 350 line drawings. The manual briefly summarizes the ecology, distribution, and frequency status of the province's foliose and squamulose lichens. Each genus account provides a common name, a short description, pertinent references, notes on the derivation of the common name, and notes on global status and distribution, taxonomy, chemistry, and/or similar genera. Each species account provides species and author citation, distribution maps, common names, habit, and lichen distribution in B.C.
Download or read book British Columbia s Inland Rainforest written by Susan Stevenson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast temperate rainforests of coastal British Columbia are world renowned, but much less is known about the other rainforest located 500 kilometres inland along the western slopes of the interior mountains. The unique integration of continentality and humidity in this region favours the development of lush rainforest communities that incorporate both coastal and boreal elements. In British Columbia's Inland Rainforest, scientists bring together, for the first time, a broad spectrum of information about this distinctive ecosystem. They also consider the ecological consequences of human activities in the rainforest and present strategies for its management and conservation.

Download or read book Wanting the Day written by Brian Bartlett and published by Fredericton, N.B. : Goose Lane Editions. This book was released on 2003 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1980s, Bartlett has become one of Canada's leading poets, and the time is ripe for volume of his best work. For Wanting the Day: Selected Poems, he has chosen the most dramatic poems from six earlier volumes. From the beginning of his career, Brian Bartlett's poetry has been refined and sensual, far-reaching and grounded. In this new collection, Bartlett's vision is distilled, and new combinations throw the insights of three decades into high relief. With a passion for the physical rooted in the spiritual, his poems combine seemingly discordant ideas and facts with emotion in a minimum of narrative space. Whether writing about a jazz drummer or a foot-doctor, a run-down hotel or an Adirondack mountain, his gift for language and insight brings into the reader's consciousness visions never before seen, thoughts and feelings never before recognized. Favourites in the collection include "Cousin Gifts," a small-scale, large-spirited Christmas poem; the sequence "Underwater Carpentry," winner of a Malahat Review Long Poem prize; and "Foot-doctor for the Homeless," winner of the Petra Kenney Award competition. Wanting the Day has been published simultaneously in the UK by Peterloo Poets Society.

Download or read book Canada s Report on the Montr al Process Criteria and Indicators for the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Temperate and Boreal Forests written by Canadian Forest Service and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Montreal Process was formed to advance the development of internationally agreed-upon criteria & indicators for sustainable forest management. The Canadian commitment to this process is demonstrated by the development of a domestic set of seven criteria & indicators, six of this relate to forest conditions, attributes, functions, or benefits. The seventh relates to the overall policy framework that can facilitate sustainable forest management and support efforts to conserve, maintain, or enhance the conditions, attributes, and benefits captured in the first six criteria. This report begins with an introduction describing forest ecosystems and forest management in Canada, explaining the area of forest covered by the report, and indentifying Canada-specific forest management characteristics to help place the criteria & indicators framework in context. The main section contains reports on the criteria, each with an introduction and reports on the corresponding indicators (what is being measured, indicator data or factual description, information sources). The final section contains a summary of all the criteria as well as an overview of Canada's ability to report on them and plans to enhance reporting capability in the future. Includes glossary.
