From precious jewellery to the bricks and mortar that make up our homes, they have now become an integral part of our lives. Perhaps the huge upsurge of spiritual interest in crystals towards the end of the 20th century coincides with the significance many people attach to the dawn of a new millennium. Or perhaps, more people have become intrigued by the new and interesting crystals now available from all corners of the world. The Magic of Crystals explores how these stones are the product of natural energy derived from natural forces such as ancient stars, the sun, the movement of the earth over thousands of years and the heat of molten rock. It would almost seem wasteful to ignore them...

Book Interjections Translation and Translanguaging

Download or read book Interjections Translation and Translanguaging written by Rosanna Masiola and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about interjections and their transcultural issues. Challenging the marginalization of the past, the ubiquity of interjections and translational practices are presented in their multilingual and cross-cultural aspects. The survey widens the field of inquiry to a multi-genre and context-based perspective. The quanti-qualitative corpus has been processed on the base of topics of relevance and thematization. The range of examples varies from adaptation of novels into films, from Shakespeare, from Zulu oral epics to opera, from children’s narratives to cartoons, from migration literature to gangster and horror films and their audiovisual translation. The use of American Yiddish, Italian American, South African English, and Jamaican account for the controversial aspects of interjections as a universal phenomenon, and, conversely, as a pragmatic marker of identity in (post)colonial contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bats, often misunderstood and unfairly burdened with associations of darkness and malevolence, have long been intertwined with folklore, mythology, and the realms of the supernatural. Their nocturnal flights and cryptic behaviors have fueled the human imagination, giving rise to legends that transcend cultures and civilizations. In this collection, we embark on a journey through the haunted dimensions where bats become conduits for curses, ancient pacts, and spectral entities that manifest in chilling tales of horror. There's a peculiar allure to darkness—a fascination that borders on the unknown and the forbidden. Bats, with their silent flights and haunting cries, have become symbolic emissaries of the night. As we delve into these horror stories, we invite you to suspend disbelief and embrace the sinister beauty that dwells within the shadows. The genesis of this anthology lies in the exploration of the primal fears that echo through generations. Bats, with their associations with vampires, witches, and supernatural omens, have been both feared and revered throughout history. As we curated these tales, we aimed not only to elicit shivers down the spine but also to unravel the rich tapestry of human imagination and the primal instincts that respond to the unknown.

  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 1843837781
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Runes written by Michael P. Barnes and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offers a full introduction to and survey of runes and runology: their history, how they were used, and their interpretation. Runes, often considered magical symbols of mystery and power, are in fact an alphabetic form of writing. Derived from one or more Mediterranean prototypes, they were used by Germanic peoples to write different kinds of Germanic language, principally Anglo-Saxon and the various Scandinavian idioms, and were carved into stone, wood, bone, metal, and other hard surfaces; types of inscription range from memorials to the dead, through Christian prayers and everyday messages to crude graffiti. First reliably attested in the second century AD, runes were in due course supplanted by the roman alphabet, though in Anglo-Saxon England they continued in use until the early eleventh century, inScandinavia until the fifteenth (and later still in one or two outlying areas). This book provides an accessible, general account of runes and runic writing from their inception to their final demise. It also covers modern uses of runes, and deals with such topics as encoded texts, rune names, how runic inscriptions were made, runological method, and the history of runic research. A final chapter explains where those keen to see runic inscriptions can most easily find them. Professor MICHAEL P, BARNES is Emeritus Professor of Scandinavian Studies, University College London.

Book Mental Health Spirituality and Religion in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Age

Download or read book Mental Health Spirituality and Religion in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Age written by Albrecht Classen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-07-28 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume continues the critical exploration of fundamental issues in the medieval and early modern world, here concerning mental health, spirituality, melancholy, mystical visions, medicine, and well-being. The contributors, who originally had presented their research at a symposium at The University of Arizona in May 2013, explore a wide range of approaches and materials pertinent to these issues, taking us from the early Middle Ages to the eighteenth century, capping the volume with some reflections on the relevance of religion today. Lapidary sciences matter here as much as medical-psychological research, combined with literary and art-historical approaches. The premodern understanding of mental health is not taken as a miraculous panacea for modern problems, but the contributors suggest that medieval and early modern writers, scientists, and artists commanded a considerable amount of arcane, sometimes curious and speculative, knowledge that promises to be of value and relevance even for us today, once again. Modern palliative medicine finds, for instance, intriguing parallels in medieval word magic, and the mystical perspectives encapsulated highly productive alternative perceptions of the macrocosm and microcosm that promise to be insightful and important also for the post-modern world.

Before Ambergris can change the course of history by announcing his incredible discovery, he is brutally murdered in his office at Triad Genomics, an international biotech company. Ambergris has left behind a labyrinthine series of clues that ultimately reveals the truth: There is a message from a much earlier, more sophisticated human civilization encoded in the human genome! Who planted this code eons ago? And why? And can it be decoded before it's too late? Ambergris's protégé, Christian Madison, and his assistant, Grace Nguyen, must follow the serpentine trail to uncover a global conspiracy of silence, secrecy, and murder that spans the breadth of human history. A shadowy group known only as the Order guards the ancient secret enciphered in the mythologies and architecture of Earth's oldest civilizations and encoded into the very fabric of human DNA. Ambergris's clues lead Madison and Nguyen through the mysteries of the Maya and ancient Egypt, the forgotten knowledge of Sumeria, and the enigmas of modern science. Pursued at every turn by Ambergris's killers, Madison and Nguyen race to uncover the secrets of the Genesis Code before the Order can carry out the final, sinister step of a genocidal plan.
