Book excerpt: The face of evil. And the face of greed… The video showed a nearly naked man bloodied and beaten. Even as archaeologist and TV presenter Annja Creed watched, the clock on his suicide vest ticked down, and precious seconds were lost. But this was no stranger. Garin was her friend. Their fates had been bound by the secrets of Joan of Arc's sword. And Annja had less than twenty-four hours to save his life…. The price for Garin's life was the lost mask of Torquemada, rumored to have been cast by the Grand Inquisitor himself, five hundred years ago during the Spanish Inquisition. Abandoned crypts, lost palaces and a cruel and ancient brotherhood: all clues to the mask's complicated and deadly mystery that Annja, and her mentor, Roux—using all of their considerable resources and cunning—must solve before Garin runs out of time. Annja Creed is facing her greatest trial. And not even the holy sword of Joan of Arc can spare her from the final judgment.

Book The Sorcerer s Death Mask

Book excerpt: Back in Alleric Castle, Al, Owen and Mahoot stumble upon a book called The History of the Sabre. The book tells them about a sorcerer who was buried along with all his treasure in a crypt on Dragon Island, a golden death mask set upon his face. Keen to find more treasure, Captain Gunner is happy to accompany the boys to Dragon Island. Once there, however, they are attacked by a massive, fierce dragon which, despite shots and stabs, does not die. It is deathless. As it roars a mighty roar, the boys notice a dark diamond stuck between its teeth, explaining everything. Seeking shelter in a nearby tunnel, the boys then spot Snotty Nell, who has also come looking for treasure. Luckily, Snotty has been drinking sahlep, and the drink s delicious fragrance makes the dragon run after her, allowing the boys to make their way into the crypt. Once inside the crypt, Gunner and the boys discover an enormous amount of treasure and begin carrying it aboard The Invincible. Al then decides to rescue Snotty from the dragon by stuffing sahlep into a large leg of pork and dangling it in front of the fierce creature. The plan works even better than expected: as the dragon bites into the pork, the black diamond dislodges from its teeth, and the dragon falls over the cliff into the sea, where Greeny Jack hungrily awaits. Book The Drowned Muse

  • Pages : 401 pages

Download or read book The Drowned Muse written by Anne-Gaëlle Saliot and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Drowned Muse is a study of the extraordinary destiny, in the history of European culture, of an object which could seem, at first glance, quite ordinary in the history of European culture. It tells the story of a mask, the cast of a young girl's face entitled "L'Inconnue de la Seine" (the Unknown Woman of the Seine), and its subsequent metamorphoses as a cultural figure. Legend has it that the "Inconnue" drowned herself in Paris at the end of the nineteenth century. The forensic scientist tending to her unidentified corpse at the Paris Morgue was supposedly so struck by her allure that he captured in plaster the contours of her face. This unknown girl, also called "The Mona Lisa of Suicide," has since become the object of an obsessive interest that started in the late 1890s, reached its peak in the 1930s, and continues to reverberate today. Aby Warburg defines art history as "a ghost story for grown-ups." This study is simlarly "a ghost story for grown-ups," narrating the aura of a cultural object that crosses temporal, geographical, and linguistic frontiers. It views the "Inconnue" as a symptomatic expression of a modern world haunted by the earlier modernity of the nineteenth century. It also investigates how the mask's metamorphoses reflect major shifts in the cultural history of the last two centuries, approaching the "Iconnue" as an entry point to understand a phenomenon characteristic of 20th- and 21st-century modernity: the translatability of media. Doing so, this study mobilizes discourses surrounding the "Inconnue," casting them as points of negotiation through which we may consider the modern age.

Book Decadent Subjects

Download or read book Decadent Subjects written by Charles Bernheimer and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2002-07-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illuminating exploration of fin de siècle decadence “by a well-known authority in the areas of European literature, culture, and psychoanalysis” (Pre-Raphaelite Studies). The influential writer and scholar Charles Bernheimer described decadence as a “stimulant that bends thought out of shape, deforming traditional conceptual molds.” In this posthumously published work, Bernheimer succeeds in making a critical concept out of this perennially fashionable, rarely understood term. This remarkable collection of essays shows the contradictions of the phenomenon, which is both a condition and a state of mind. In seeking to show why people have failed to give a satisfactory account of the term decadence, Bernheimer argues that we often mistakenly take decadence to represent something concrete, that we see as some sort of agent. His salutary response is to return to those authors and artists whose work constitutes the topos of decadence, rereading key late nineteenth-century authors such as Nietzsche, Zola, Hardy, Wilde, Moreau, and Freud to rediscover the very dynamics of the decadent. Through careful analysis of the literature, art, and music of the fin de siècle—including a riveting discussion of the many faces of Salome—Bernheimer leaves us with a fascinating and multidimensional look at decadence. Honorable Mention for the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for Comparative Literary Studies from the Modern Language Association
