Book Cryogenic Positive Expulsion Bladders

Download or read book Cryogenic Positive Expulsion Bladders written by and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As more complex space missions are planned, new requirements become essential for space vehicle design. One of the areas of major interest is the study and development of methods for transfer or ejection of cryogenic propellants under a zero gravity environment to a point of usage. An essentially zero gravity environment is produced on a vehicle and its component parts during certain portions of its space flight. The relative positions that a fluid and its vapor will occupy in its storage tank during zero gravity have been extensively investigated. Propellant tanks can be designed to exploit the known properties of surface tension forces and to orient the fluid and its vapor over the appropriate discharge ports by use of surface tension stand pipes and screens. However, adverse accelerations, such as lateral movements caused by the vehicle attitude control system, may cause the discharge port to be uncovered. The purpose of this report is to summarize Lewis Research Center's in-house and contractual testing data for two promising polymeric expulsion bladder barrier films (Mylar and Kapton) and two substrate materials (polyethylene film and Nomex-Nylon paper). (KAR) p. 2-3.

Book Development of Positive Expulsion Systems for Cryogenic Fluids

Download or read book Development of Positive Expulsion Systems for Cryogenic Fluids written by J. E. Bell and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The operation instructions, prototype testing program, and the manufacturing procedures required to develop a prototype unit are presented for a Mylar film bladder for liquid hydrogen expulsion. A 27-gallon, liquid hydrogen expulsion unit was fabricated to test a series of three-ply Mylar bladders. The test program describes the data required and the test setup used to determine the heat transfer rate and the operational characteristics of the prototype system. A summary of problem areas, bladder failures and gas pressure regulator malfunctions has been included together with possible solutions. The report is summarized with a list of recommendations for future expulsion units. (Author).

Book Liquid Acquisition Devices for Advanced In Space Cryogenic Propulsion Systems

Download or read book Liquid Acquisition Devices for Advanced In Space Cryogenic Propulsion Systems written by Jason William Hartwig and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-11-21 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid Acquisition Devices for Advanced In-Space Cryogenic Propulsion Systems discusses the importance of reliable cryogenic systems, a pivotal part of everything from engine propulsion to fuel deposits. As some of the most efficient systems involve advanced cryogenic fluid management systems that present challenging issues, the book tackles issues such as the difficulty in obtaining data, the lack of quality data and models, and the complexity in trying to model these systems. The book presents models and experimental data based on rare and hard-to-obtain cryogenic data. Through clear descriptions of practical data and models, readers will explore the development of robust and flexible liquid acquisition devices (LAD) through component-level and full-scale ground experiments, as well as analytical tools. This book presents new and rare experimental data, as well as analytical models, in a fundamental area to the aerospace and space-flight communities. With this data, the reader can consider new and improved ways to design, analyze, and build expensive flight systems. Presents a definitive reference for design ideas, analysis tools, and performance data on cryogenic liquid acquisition devices Provides historical perspectives to present fundamental design models and performance data, which are applied to two practical examples throughout the book Describes a series of models to optimize liquid acquisition device performance, which are confirmed through a variety of parametric component level tests Includes video clips of experiments on a companion website

Book Developments in the Centrifuge Separation Project

Download or read book Developments in the Centrifuge Separation Project written by B. Burns and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the work performed by TRW Systems during the second phase of a continuing program entitled, "Exploratory Development of the Radiotracer Propellant Gauge." The work covered by the report was conducted from April 1965 through August 1966 by Members of the Technical Staff in The Nuclear Technology Department of the Propulsion Technology Laboratory. The program was supported and directed by the Atomic Energy Commission, Division of Isotopes Development. The primary objective was the analytical and experimental evaluation of radiotracer propellant gauge components. During Phase II the following major efforts were completed: (1) A radiotracer propellant gauge for a bladder expulsion system was fabricated and successfully tested. Gauge components were designed to meet typical system requirements since the specific gauge design depends strongly upon mission and spacecraft requirements. (2) Analyses and tests were performed to evaluate 85Kr diffusion through bladder materials and of 85Kr solubility in liquid rocket propellants were accomplished in this task. (3) Several techniques were investigated for the application of radiotracer gauging techniques to bladderless expulsion systems. The techniques studied were the tagging of the pressurant gas with a radiotracer for storable propellant systems and the use of the helium scintillation phenomenon for gauging cryogenic propellants. (4) Krypton injector assemblies were designed and fabricated. Experimental evaluation of the enjectors demnstrated the practicalbility of loading, sealing, and storing precise, reproducible quantities of 85Kr gas mixtures under high pressure. (5) Flight-type detector electronics packages were designed, procured, and tested. It was concluded that integrated circuit electronics of the type tested would be satisfactory for the gauging system provided a well regulated power supply was used. (6) Methods were investigated for protecting exposed gauge detectors from hi
