Book excerpt: For more than eighteen years now my humble column has appeared, on a bi-weekly basis, in The WORLD, Central Vermont s favorite newspaper. (Note: If you looked for the column every other week, but started on the wrong week, you missed it completely.) This book is a collection of many of those writings, so you have another chance. The earliest ones are not here, as pasting stories from slate tablets onto word documents is a difficult thing to do. -If you find any bits of wisdom between these covers, it s not my fault.-

Book excerpt: This story is about the two years I spent in Laos as a British Doctor, working at an old French colonial hospital in Luang Prabang. Set in 1967 and 68 the war was still raging, with the Communists determined to win seven years later. It describes the challenging job, the Lao people, and how my wife, children and I lived in this foreign country. Changes took place in my Christian faith and marriage, and a young Hmong girl stole my heart. It has humour, pathos, success and failure, and gives a glimpse of life in an under-developed country at war. The book is about people, suffering, danger, love, life and death. The recorded memories refuse to dim and die, and are all true

Book Complex Words in English

Download or read book Complex Words in English written by Valerie Adams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complex Words in English presents a comprehensive account of present-day word formation in English. Starting with a discussion of some basic issues, including the definition of 'word', motivation, lexicalization, productivity, the relevance of historical information and the usefulness of dictionaries and other data-bases, the book then moves on to describe in detail a variety of prefixing, suffixing and compounding patterns - all illustrated with copious up-to-date examples. Other topics that are explored in-depth include diminutives, backformation and other effects of reanalysis, Latin and Greek based formations and sound symbolism. Many examples are given in context: recent writing and the records of OED on CD ROM are drawn on to demonstrate the relationship between spontaneous coinages and familiar items. The comprehensive coverage allows an instructive overview and comparison of patterns and of the many and diverse factors relevant to the notion of productivity. Throughout, the discussions are placed in the context of other recent and less recent work in the area and the book also contains a useful extensive bibliography.

Book A Grammar of Iconism

Download or read book A Grammar of Iconism written by Earl R. Anderson and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary criticism often includes ad hoc comments about onomatopoeia, synaesthesia, or other forms of iconism. In A Grammar of Iconism, Earl Anderson discusses these phenomena systematically. According to Anderson, modern post-Saussurian linguistics has as its central tenet the arbitrariness of linguistic signs. Thus, linguistic elements that bear some relationship to their referent have been seen as marginal to the system of language, or at best similar in their arbitrariness to other linguistic signs. As an example of the latter, while most languages have an onomatopoeic element, different languages imitate sounds differently. Anderson argues against the standard view, provides a detailed critique of the negative arguments against iconism, and offers a positive typology that demonstrates the extensiveness and complexity of iconism in language.

Book The Apocryphal William Shakespeare

Download or read book The Apocryphal William Shakespeare written by Sabrina Feldman and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sabrina Feldman manages the Planetary Science Instrument Development Office at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Born and raised in Riverside, California, she attended college and graduate school at the University of California at Berkeley, where she enjoyed the wonderful performances of the Berkeley Shakespeare Company, studied Shakespeare's works for a semester with Professor Stephen Booth, and received a Ph.D. in experimental physics in 1996. She has worked on many different instrument development projects for NASA, and is the former deputy director of JPL's Center for Life Detection. Her scientific training, combined with a lifelong love of literature and all things Shakespearean, gives her a unique perspective on the Shakespeare authorship mystery. Dr. Feldman lives in Pasadena, California with her husband and two children. This is her first book. If William Shakespeare wrote the Bard's works... Who wrote the Shakespeare Apocrypha? During his lifetime and for many years afterwards, William Shakespeare was credited with writing not only the Bard's canonical works, but also a series of 'apocryphal' Shakespeare plays. Stylistic threads linking these lesser works suggest they shared a common author or co-author who wrote in a coarse, breezy style, and created very funny clown scenes. He was also prone to pilfering lines from other dramatists, consistent with Robert Greene's 1592 attack on William Shakespeare as an "upstart crow." The anomalous existence of two bodies of work exhibiting distinct poetic voices printed under one man's name suggests a fascinating possibility. Could William Shakespeare have written the apocryphal plays while serving as a front man for the 'poet in purple robes, ' a hidden court poet who was much admired by a literary coterie in the 1590s? And could the 'poet in purple robes' have been the great poet and statesman Thomas Sackville (1536-1608), a previously overlooked authorship candidate who is an excellent fit to the Shakespearean glass slipper? Both of these scenarios are well supported by literary and historical records, many of which have not been previously considered in the context of the Shakespeare authorship debate.
