Book excerpt: Processes that enable marine phytoplankton to acquire trace metals are fundamental to our understanding of primary productivity and global carbon cycling. This thesis explored the biogeochemistry of cobalt using analytical chemistry and physiological experiments with the dominant phytoplankton species, Prochlorococcus. A high sensitivity method for Co speciation was developed using hanging mercury drop cathodic stripping voltammetry. Dissolved Co at the Bermuda Atlantic Time Series station (BATS) in the Sargasso Sea was bound by strong organic complexes with a conditional stability constant of logK=16.3 +/- 0.9. Biweekly time series measurements of total cobalt near Bermuda from the MITESS sampler were 0-47pM throughout 1999, and averaged 20 +/- 10pM in 1999. A transect of total cobalt from BATS to American coastal waters ranged from 19-133pM and correlated negatively with salinity (r(sup 2)=0.93). Prochlorococcus strains MED4-Ax and SS120 showed an absolute requirement for Co, despite replete Zn. Co-57 uptake rates and growth rates were enhanced by additions of filtered low Co cultures, suggesting that a ligand is present that facilitates Co uptake. Co-limited Prochlorococcus cultures exhibited an increase in the fraction of cells in G2 relative to other cell cycle stages during exponential growth, and the durations of this stage increased with decreasing cobalt concentrations.

Book excerpt: The objective of this Thesis was to interpret the structural development of slowspreading ridge segments by: 1) delineating the nature, magnitude, and relative importance of primary tectonic and volcanic processes that control crustal morphology, 2) investigating the spatial and temporal variability of these processes, and 3) examining how rheological variations in the lithosphere control its structural configuration. To that end, this Thesis provides detailed documentation of faults and volcanoes (seamounts) at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge from 25°25'N to 27°10'N and extending from zero-age crust at the ridge axis to -29 Ma crust on the ridge flank. This information was used to analyze the evolution of ocean crust from initial formation in the rift valley to degradation by aging processes on the ridge flank. Accumulation of sediments affects the seafloor morphological expression of ocean crustal structure, and sediment thicknesses were also mapped to facilitate study of the morphological record of crustal accretion and tectonism. In addition, deformation conditions in the lithosphere were analyzed by study of microstructure and geothermometry of abyssal peridotite mylonites recovered from fault zones at slow-spreading ridges.

They are also an important component of continental growth both vertically and laterally. Accretionary prisms are seismically highly active and their internal deformation via megathrusting and out-of-sequence faulting are a big concern for earthquake and tsunami damage in many coastal cities around the Pacific Rim. The geometries and structures of modern accretionary prisms have been well imaged seismically and through deep drilling projects of the Ocean Drilling Program (and recently IODP) during the last 15 years. Better understanding of the spatial distribution and temporal progression of accretionary prism deformation, structural and hydrologic evolution of the décollement zone (tectonic interface between the subducting slab and the upper plate), chemical gradients and fluid flow paths within accretionary prisms, contrasting stratigraphic and deformational framework along-strike in accretionary prisms, and the distribution and ecosystems of biological communities in accretionary prism settings is most important in interpreting the evolution of ancient complex sedimentary terrains and orogenic belts in terms of subduction-related processes. This book is a collection of interdisciplinary papers documenting the geological, geophysical, geochemical, and paleontological features of modern accretionay prisms and trenches in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, based on many submersible dive cruises, ODP drilling projects, and geophysical surveys during the last 10 years. It also includes several papers presenting the results of systematic integrated studies of recent to ancient on-land accretionary prisms in comparison to modern analogues. The individual chapters are data and image rich, providing a major resource of information and knowledge from these critical components of convergent margins for researchers, faculty members, and graduate and undergraduate students. As such, the book will be a major and unique contribution in the broad fields of global tectonics, geodynamics, marine geology and geophysics, and structural geology and sedimentology.

Book excerpt: This dissertation addresses temporal and spatial characteristics of magmatic and tectonic accretion processes occurring at mid-ocean ridges during formation of new ocean lithosphere. The accretion histories of plutonic crust recovered by deep drilling of footwalls to large-displacement normal faults at three locations on the MAR are emphasized. Pb/U zircon dating of evolved gabbros and oceanic plagiogranites show that magmatic accretion typically occurs over 100-200 kyr. Magmatic accretion occurs by emplacement of many short-lived intrusive pulses that are focused at different depths within the crust and mantle. During formation of the Atlantis Massif core complex (30° N, MAR), spreading may have been partitioned up to 100% on the North American plate for at least 200 kyr, implying crustal accretion was highly asymmetric. Cooling rates of 1000-2000° C/m.y. over 900-200° C are documented at Atlantis Massif and two locations from 14-16°N, MAR, consistent with rapid denudation of the footwall sections to the seafloor following emplacement. Over a ten-day period, c. 2.5 km3 of magma were intruded along a 60 km-long dyke separating the Arabian and Nubian plates. Over the next five years, a further 13 dyke intrusions caused continued extension, eruptions and seismicity. This activity led to a renewed international focus on the role of magmatism in rifting, with major international collaborative projects working in Afar and Ethiopia to study the ongoing activity and to place it in a broader context. This book brings together articles that explore the role of magmatism in rifting, from the initiation of continental break-up through to full seafloor spreading. We also explore the hazards related to rifting and the associated volcanism. These interactions also impact the asthenosphere because melts that form in the deepest parts of the mantle may ascend and interact with shallower mantle during transport.
