Book Crushed Hopes

Download or read book Crushed Hopes written by United Nations and published by UN. This book was released on 2012 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a collective publication comprising a review of international literature on the subject of migrant deskilling and underemployment from a gender perspective and three empirical case studies from Switzerland, Canada and the United Kingdom. It explores the disproportionate difficulties skilled migrant women can face in transferring their skills and finding employment commensurate with their education when relocating to a new country. The case studies highlight situations in which migratory status and labour market dynamics can combine to constrain skilled and highly skilled migrant women to low-skilled occupations despite their often high human capital. They also analyse the impact that such occupational downgrading can have on migrant women's well-being and the strategies that women can adopt to regain a professional status.

Book excerpt: Crushed Hopes and Hopeful Beginnings: a Roman-era adventure with dangerous choices, unlikely friendships, and world views in conflict. Can God work all things for good if you don't even think he's real? Lusario was content in Cyrene as part of the Philandros household. After he returns from serving the youngest son, Diokles, while he studies in Alexandria, Lusario expects to become a paid tutor for his master, earning the money to buy his freedom. But when Diokles uses him to pay a gambling debt, he must go to Carthago as the slave of a man who hates him. His once-bright future is gone forever. So why does his Christian friend Timon insist things will turn out so much better than he expects? But Carthago brings new people, like Caelus Martinus, and new possibilities into Lusario's hopeless world. Could Timon be right? When Lusario sees a chance to escape his fate, will going for it give him a future again, or only hasten his death? Crushed Hopes and Hopeful Beginnings is a short novel about the turbulent lives of Lusario and his friends three years before Carol Ashby's next full-length novel, River of Life, when two of them embark on a journey up the Nile that changes everything. "This is a fabulous ancient-world series of novels that follow the lives of fictional early Christians. Carol is meticulous with her research and a true expert on Ancient Rome! History lovers and those who enjoy my biblical books are going to LOVE this series!" -- Roseanna White, best-selling author and Christy Award winner. If you enjoy the Roman-era Biblical fiction of Tessa Afshar and Francine River's Mark of the Lion series, you'll love the stand-alone novels of the Light in the Empire series.

Book Our Damaged Democracy

Download or read book Our Damaged Democracy written by Joseph A. Califano and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A Washington insider draws on decades of experience to deliver a blistering critique of the state of American government” (Kirkus Reviews) in an authoritative scrutiny of the forces that run our society and a call to fix our democracy before it’s too late. If you’ve been watching the news and worrying that our democracy no longer works, this book, “a cri de coeur from one of our wisest Americans” (Michael Beschloss, Presidential Historian), will help you understand why you’re right. There is colossal concentration of power in the Presidency. Congress is crippled by partisanship and hostage to special interest money. The Supreme Court and many lower federal courts are riven by politics. Add politically fractured and fragile media, feckless campaign finance laws, rampant income and education inequality, and multicultural divisions, and it’s no wonder our leaders can’t agree on anything or muster a solid majority of Americans behind them. With decades at the top in government, law, and business, Joseph A. Califano, Jr. has the capacity to be party-neutral in his evaluation and the perspective to see the big picture of our democracy. Using revealing anecdotes featuring every modern president and actions of both parties, he makes the urgent case that while we do not need to agree on all aspects of politics, we do need to trust each other and be worthy of that trust. He shows how, as engaged citizens, we can bring back systems of government that promote fairness and protect our freedom. “It’s hard to argue with [Califano’s] analysis” (The New York Times Book Review) that the longer we wait to fix these problems, the more dangerous our situation will become.

Book When Dreams Are Crushed

Download or read book When Dreams Are Crushed written by Olga Altstatt and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2001-04 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In My Brothers Footsteps, The Battle Back is a poignant, heart- warming and sometimes funny accounting of my life. It tells of love, trust, fear, dismay and conquest. From a little boy with ADD learning life's lessons the hard way on the streets of New York, to a misguided troubled youth, to growing up in the prison system and then founding one of the most successful drug treatment programs for youth in the country. The story centers around my relationship with my older brother (by six years) who led me down the road of drugs, crime, and prison until I fought back with the help of a therapeutic community to become the person I am today. The book also serves as a reminder for parents and teachers of children with ADD and /or drug- related problems that something must be done immediately. The problems of ADD and drug abuse are devastating and, if not dealt with, can lead you through a lifetime of anguish and I know that the more we tell parents and teachers about these concerns, the easier it will be for them to recognize and deal with them. This book was written the way I speak, from the heart with the flavor of the streets in every word. I hope you enjoy it.

Book The Education of an Idealist

Download or read book The Education of an Idealist written by Samantha Power and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 805 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES, WALL STREET JOURNAL, AND USA TODAY BESTSELLER An intimate, powerful, and galvanizing memoir by Pulitzer Prize winner, human rights advocate, and former US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power. Named one of the best books of the year: The New York Times • National Public Radio • Time • The Economist • The Washington Post • Vanity Fair • Christian Science Monitor • Publishers Weekly • Audible “Her highly personal and reflective memoir . . . is a must-read for anyone who cares about our role in a changing world.”—President Barack Obama Includes an updated afterword Tracing her distinctly American journey from immigrant to war correspondent to presidential Cabinet official, Samantha Power’s acclaimed memoir is a unique blend of suspenseful storytelling, vivid character portraits, and shrewd political insight. After her critiques of US foreign policy caught the eye of Senator Barack Obama, he invited her to work with him on Capitol Hill and then on his presidential campaign. When Obama won the presidency, Power went from being an activist outsider to serving as his human rights adviser and, in 2013, becoming the youngest-ever US Ambassador to the United Nations. Power transports us from her childhood in Dublin to the streets of war-torn Bosnia to the White House Situation Room and the world of high-stakes diplomacy, offering a compelling and deeply honest look at navigating the halls of power while trying to put one’s ideals into practice. Along the way, she lays bare the searing battles and defining moments of her life, shows how she juggled the demands of a 24/7 national security job with raising two young children, and makes the case for how we each can advance the cause of human dignity. This is an unforgettable account of the power of idealism—and of one person’s fierce determination to make a difference. “This is a wonderful book. […] The interweaving of Power’s personal story, family story, diplomatic history and moral arguments is executed seamlessly and with unblinking honesty.”—THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN, The New York Times Book Review “Truly engrossing…A pleasure to read.”—RACHEL MADDOW “A beautiful memoir about the times we’re living in and the questions we must ask ourselves…I honestly couldn’t put it down.” —CHERYL STRAYED, author of Wild “Power’s compelling memoir provides critically important insights we should all understand as we face some of the most vexing issues of our time.” —BRYAN STEVENSON, author of Just Mercy

She'd considered herself lucky because she had a little sister she adored and close friends she could always count on. But after the unexpected death of her mom, life became a whole lot more complicated. Until the day she tumbled into Reece's arms. He was the one who led her through the darkest days of her life. Reece knew how ridiculous it was to think that he was going to end up with the girl he dated in high school. But he had foolishly thought that he and Cleo had a chance. They'd clicked in a way that went far deeper than he ever thought possible. So, ridiculous or not, he had thought he and Cleo would be forever. But then without warning, she'd ripped his heart out and tossed it back to him. So obviously, he had been wrong. Now he's not sure how he's going to be able to deal with seeing her every day. Now that she's so over him. Or...maybe she's not? Because what Reece doesn't know is that Cleo has a secret. If it had been up to her? She would never have let him go.
