Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The secrets to the Crunch Bang drive lay in the remnants of the Big Bang—there for any species to discover. Many years after humanity joined the galactic civilization of space-faring species, starship cruise liners take the wealthy and the humble to the greatest sights and places in the galaxy. From the ruins of the T’Kon civilization to the azure seas of Ceti Alpha 5 and every other place Cantorians exult in song. Which means everywhere, even places that anyone with an ounce of sense would stay away from. A starliner means passengers, and passengers love to eat and drink. Mostly. Which means that they excrete waste and it’s Chrystal Eagle’s job as First Technician on the Elegant Slipstream to manage the entire complex system. The greatest gig in the galaxy—except for the passengers. Crunch Bang collects the three stories that launched the Crunch Bang universe: “The Greatest Gig,” “Love, [unpronounceable],” and “Shore Leave.” Also includes an excerpt of the full-length novel Stowaway to Eternity set in the same universe. Buckle up and take the plunge!

Book Bangs Crunches Whimpers and Shrieks

Download or read book Bangs Crunches Whimpers and Shrieks written by John Earman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-11-02 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost from its inception, Einstein's general theory of relativity was known to sanction spacetime models harboring singularities. Until the 1960s, however, spacetime singularities were thought to be artifacts of the idealizations of the models. This attitude evaporated in the face of a series of theorems, due largely to Stephen Hawking and Roger Penrose, which showed that Einstein's general theory implies that singularities can be expected to occur in a wide variety of conditions in both gravitational collapse and in cosmology. In the light of these results some physicists adopted the attitude that, since spacetime singularities are intolerable, general relativity contains within itself the seeds of its own destruction. Others hoped that peaceful coexistence with singularities could be achieved by proving a form of Roger Penrose's cosmic censorship hypothesis, which would place singularities safely inside black holes. Whatever the attitude one adopts toward spacetime singularities, it is evident that they raise a number of foundational problems for physics and have profound implications for the philosophy of space and time. However, philosophers of science have been slow to awaken to the significance of these developments. Indeed, this is the first serious book-length study of the subject by a philosopher of science. It features an overview of the literature on singularities, as well as an analytic commentary on their significance to a number of scientific and philosophical issues.

Book From the Big Bang to the Big Crunch and Everything in Between

Download or read book From the Big Bang to the Big Crunch and Everything in Between written by Vlad Van Rosenthal, and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-10-07 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our passionate curiosity to unravel the mysteries of the world, life, and the universe, humans have contrived numerous theories, both scientific and religious, with each claiming more relevance than the last. Despite all of these influential postulates, however, the real truth remains obscured to us, as it likely will until the moment of our eventual extinction. In From the Big Bang to the Big Crunch and Everything in Between: A Simplified Look at a Not-So-Simple Universe, Dr. Vlad Van Rosenthal explores the subjects made complex by science and religion—those concerning our planet, our solar system, and our civilization. Van Rosenthal’s compelling and accessible style introduces us to the fundamental explanations of the origin and future of our universe and of human life. From the cataclysmic explosion at the beginning to the one at the end—either from asteroids colliding with the earth, the nuclear explosion of nearby stars, or the fatal swelling of our own sun—we are a unique species on an unique planet that has most likely seen numerous civilizations and will hopefully see many more. We are all invited to form and debate our own perspectives on the earth, time, and space, for we are truly beholden to no one’s mind but our own.

Book excerpt: An audacious New Face of Fiction debut: nine riveting stories that announce a major writer in the tradition of Yann Martel and Barbara Gowdy. Unexpected humour and tenderness intertwine with loneliness and hopefulness in this remarkable book from an already acclaimed writer. In nine richly varied stories, written in intense, clear-eyed prose, the reader is led into an exploration of the human need for connection, however tenuous or absurd, and at whatever cost. The stories operate with heartbreaking precision, drawing us past the surface of characters’ lives and into the moments of decision and recognition that shape these people irrevocably. Here are stories striking in the range of their shifting tone and the reach of their subjects. We are introduced to a support group for people who suspect their benign nature has caused benign tumours to grow inside them. The title story zeroes in on a girl with Fred Hoyle syndrome whose age expands and contracts like the universe. A recently widowed woman talks to her husband’s ashes, which are entombed in a hollowed-out curling stone. A store detective’s valiant act to save a pair of pink calfskin gloves is entwined with the unfortunate results of an unsuccessful space mission. Rendering grief, loneliness, hope, love and happiness with exquisite subtlety and intelligence, Neil Smith proves himself an able chronicler of the human condition. Bang Crunch constitutes a significant achievement by a powerful writer.

What happened to all the you's you might have been if you had made different decisions at critical junctures in your life? Are they still out there somewhere, living their lives? Is it possible you can visit with them? In your new world, straight lines will no longer exist; they will all be curved, but some will seem as if they are straight! Numbers will become beautiful of themselves and have little to do with things! Number theory results - oh, yes, at a low level - are attained here, but some perhaps unknown to mathematicians to this day! Death? What is death? You will explore that question with me and find many possible answers including that death may be but occasional brief interludes between lives of your animus or soul.

Book First Person Singular

  • ISBN : 1525570064

Download or read book First Person Singular written by Yvon Cormier and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2020-09-02 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no soul that lives on past the death of the body, no reincarnation, no life after death. Most religions today are outdated, and their teachings can no longer be logically sustained. Fear of death and what is to become of us after we die has motivated humans to create stories and belief systems that do not stand up to rational argument. The universe is eternal, but a single human’s place in it is not. First Person Singular replaces the need to believe in a God that can be explained into nonexistence. This book perspective has been crafted to help us confront the reality of our mortality. The First Person Singular—“I”—will always exist. By examining issues of religion, history, biology, astrophysics, and philosophy, the author explains how religions cannot be defended as offering a promise of eternal life or reincarnation. Human lives, however remarkable, are but trivial in the scope of evolution and the universe. First Person Singular offers assurance that “I” will live as long as the last human being is alive on Earth.

Book What Really Happens When You Die

Download or read book What Really Happens When You Die written by Andrew McLauchlin and published by Arcturus Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to us when we die? It's a question that has sought answers from religion; philosophy; the supernatural; and, more recently, to evidence from 'near death' experience. But never, it seems, from science. Yet that's where the answer appears to lie. Specifically, in cosmology, the study of the history and future of the universe. Taking his inspiration from Stephen Hawking's groundbreaking A Brief History of Time, author Andrew McLauchlin brings his background in physics to bear on this fascinating subject. He examines developments in cosmology and shows how they point to a conclusion about the dimension of time that has very real implications not only for the universe but also for us. What Really Happens When We Die? is a journey of discovery into a realm that offers an astonishing explanation for one of life's imponderables.

Book Atlas and the Globe

  • ISBN : 1000935221

Download or read book Atlas and the Globe written by Giuseppe Roncoroni and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-08-31 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an anthology of philosophical essays. Its principle is simple: the moments of our life are original. What we perceive and think does not arise from an elusive and illusive entity called God, Soul or External World. This setting, in line with philosophical and scientific trends, is the starting point for reaching a coherent and innovative solution to the problems of knowledge. In the foreground we encounter the relationship between the mind and the brain, where the terms are composed according to the analogy with music and the musical score, and then the basis of time and the sense of the Big Bang. These are the frame and sketch of the book.
