Book Evaluating Novel Threats to the Homeland Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Cruise Missiles

Download or read book Evaluating Novel Threats to the Homeland Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Cruise Missiles written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to invest homeland security resources wisely in the United States can appear to be an intractable problem because the large, open American society seems to be vulnerable to so many threats in every corner of the country. This monograph is intended to present a defense-planning approach to bound the problem and thereby aid policy and resource decisions about one type of potential threat to the homeland: cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The methodology used can be applied to other modes of attack, and the insights gained from this approach extend to other threats as well. Indeed, although the focus of the research is on a specific class of weapons, it does not look at that class in isolation; rather, it considers the weapons as one of many options open to a potential attacker and seeks to identify investment strategies that are effective against multiple threats and weapons.

Book Dealing with the Threat of Cruise Missiles

Download or read book Dealing with the Threat of Cruise Missiles written by Dennis M Gormley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can the core transatlantic Allies make coalitions more effective? One year on from Kosovo, disparities in the capabilities of the coalition partners, as well as uneven levels of prior coordination, persist. To address these problems will require much greater force planning in peacetime. This stimulating and influential work offers one of the most comprehensive independent assessments to date of the Kosovo campaign, and of the performance of the NATO allies. An important subject area in which there is a great deal of international interest.

Download or read book Missile Contagion written by Dennis M. Gormley and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2008-05-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most books on missile proliferation focus on the spread of ballistic missiles or cruise missiles, not both. Gormley's work, however, explains why cruise missiles are beginning to spread widely, but does so by explaining their spread in the context of ballistic missile proliferation. It therefore treats both ballistic and cruise missile proliferation as related phenomenon. This work also focuses evenhandedly on both nonproliferation and defense policy (including missile defenses and counterforce doctrines) to fashion a set of integrated strategies for dealing with ballistic and cruise missile proliferation. Signs of missile contagion abound. In this study, Gormley argues that a series of rapid and surprising developments since 2005 suggest that the proliferation of missiles capable of delivering either weapons of mass destruction or highly accurate conventional payloads is approaching a critical threshold. The surprising fact is that land-attack cruise missiles, not ballistic missiles, constitute the primary problem. Flying under the radar, both literally and figuratively, land-attack cruise missiles add a dangerous new dimension to protecting U.S. security interests and preventing regional military instability. Gormley asserts that cruise missiles are not destined to supplant ballistic missiles; rather, they are likely to join them, because when both are employed together, they could severely test even the best missile defenses. Worse yet, Gormley argues, land-attack cruise missiles are increasingly being linked to preemptive strike doctrines, which are fueling regional arms races and crisis instability. This work explains why an epidemic of cruise missile proliferation, long forecasted by analysts, has only recently begun to occur. After first assessing the state of ballistic missile proliferation, Gormley explores the role of three factors in shaping the spread of cruise missiles. These include specialized knowledge needed for missile development; narrative messages about reasons for acquiring cruise missiles; and norms of state behavior about missile nonproliferation policy and defense doctrine. This book then addresses the policy adjustments needed to stanch the spread of cruise missiles in the first place, or, barring that, cope militarily with a more demanding missile threat consisting of both cruise and ballistic missiles.

Book RAND Arroyo Center Research Brief Future Air Missile Threats

Download or read book RAND Arroyo Center Research Brief Future Air Missile Threats written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rarely has the U.S. Army had to worry about air attack. Since the early days of World War II, the Air Force and its predecessors have owned the skies, and the Army has been able to carry out its missions largely unimpeded by aerial threats. But that may change. A global economy promises to make technologies of all types widely available, which means that even sophisticated weapons will be cheaper and easier to get. These include not only the tactical ballistic missiles that menaced U.S. forces during the Gulf War, but also cruise missiles and armed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The long time it takes to develop and buy weapons forces the Army to start today to defend itself against the threats of tomorrow. Researchers from RAND's Arroyo Center analyzed six plausible future worlds to determine which types of air and missile threats might confront the Army in a range of geopolitical or strategic situations with an eye to determining where it should invest its research and development funds. Results of the analysis appear in Army Air and Missile Defenses: Future Challenges Their major conclusions are that: The Army needs to invest more in cruise missile defenses: (1)The Army should retain and improve its short-range missile defense against aircraft: (2) Developing laser weapons against rockets and artillery may not be worth the cost: (3)Planned defenses against tactical ballistic missiles appear adequate in most cases.

Book The Impact of Missile Threats on the Reliability of U S Overseas Bases

Download or read book The Impact of Missile Threats on the Reliability of U S Overseas Bases written by Joel Wuthnow and published by Strategic Studies Institute. This book was released on 2005 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the United States will continue to utilize overseas military bases in the next decade, the acquisition and improvement of long-range missiles by several potential aggressors will pose new operational and strategic problems for U.S. forces. Several states will likely attain a credible capability to threaten U.S. bases within their respective regions, despite the sophistication of U.S. missile defenses. Strategically, there are uncertainties about whether the United States can deter some of these new missile-capable actors. Deterrence problems will create new risks to U.S. deployed forces: if deterrence fails, U.S. troops will be at a higher level of exposure. Alternately, missiles will grant states some leverage to dissaude the United States from actually using overseas forces, as well as a means to coerce host states into denying access to the United States. Though several factors will mitigate these concerns, the question remains: How reliable will alliance-derived "tripwires" and other deployments be in the overall U.S. strategy of engagement? Alterations in force structure, tailored to these threats, will likely be needed.
