Book Powdered Crude Drug Microscopy of Leaves and Barks

Download or read book Powdered Crude Drug Microscopy of Leaves and Barks written by Vidhu Aeri and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-11-22 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Powdered Crude Drug Microscopy of Leaves and Barks investigates various microscopic techniques used in the examination of structural and cellular features in order to determine their botanical origin. These methods are useful in identifying species with similar morphological characters. Today, there is a variety of methods available to authenticate herbal drugs, ranging from simple morphological examination to physical and chemical analysis, and DNA molecular biology. Due to cost, powder microscopy is the most practical method for primary authentication. Botanical microscopy is a unique, valuable, rapid and cost-effective assessment tool, and plays an important role in the authentication and assessment of medicinal plants. This book is an essential resource for students and researchers involved in the study of plants and natural products, as well as professionals in industries manufacturing plant-based products for use during quality control and assurance steps. Provides a fundamental understanding of the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of crude drugs, including photographs of herbs in their raw and powder forms. Presents specific characteristics and sub-features for identifying barks and leaves, including stone cells, calcium oxalate crystals, starch grains, medullary rays, fibres, sclereids, cork, isolated oil cells, tubular lactiferous canals, phloem parenchyma, masses, rhytidoma, parenchyma and secretory canals. Includes specific characteristics for identifying leaves, such as epidermis, stomata, trichomes, calcium oxalate crystals, fibres, cell contents, cystoliths, lamina, starch grains, tracheids, lactiferous canals and xylem vessels. Demonstrates how the specificity of characteristics for a particular bark or leaf in powder form can lead to its authentication. Features standard operating protocols for preparation of slides and lab samples using industrially operated grinders to observe general as well as distinguishing microscopical characters of barks and leaves.

Book Some Drugs and Herbal Products

Download or read book Some Drugs and Herbal Products written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the IARC Monographs provides an assessment of the carcinogenicity of 14 drugs and herbal products. The IARC Monographs Working Group relied on epidemiological studies to evaluate the carcinogenic hazard to humans exposed to the drugs digoxin (widely prescribed for the treatment of chronic heart failure), pioglitazone (used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus), and hydrochlorothiazide (used to treat hypertension). Other agents evaluated included the drugs primidone, sulfasalazine, pentosan polysulfate sodium, and triamterene, and five herbal products (or their components): Aloe vera whole leaf extract, goldenseal root powder, Ginkgo biloba leaf extract, kava extract, and pulegone. In view of the limited agent-specific information available from epidemiological studies, assessments of these agents relied mainly on carcinogenicity bioassays to reach conclusions as to the carcinogenic hazard to exposed humans.

Book Drugs of Natural Origin

Download or read book Drugs of Natural Origin written by Gunnar Samuelsson and published by Swedish Pharmaceutical Press. This book was released on 2017-01-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drugs of Natural Origin is a unique multidisciplinary book suitable for undergraduate and graduate students and teachers in the area of natural product science, but also as a complementary book for disciplines like medicinal chemistry, biochemistry and pharmacology. The book can also serve society as a scientific source for the understanding of a sustainable use of natural products in the development of new drugs, scientifically based herbal remedies, and environmentally friendly biomolecules. During evolution, molecules have been developed for specific functions in nature. These bioactive substances have a potential as new drug candidates in drug development, but also as pharmacological tools, intermediates or templates for synthesis of drugs. This book deals with terrestrial and marine bioactive substances of plant, microbial or animal origin. The occurrence, biosynthesis, isolation, chemistry and medical use are described together with basic research strategies. An increased understanding of the medical importance of bioactive natural products has developed in society. Since the publication of the sixth edition, six years ago, considerable progress has been achieved in the study of biosynthetic pathways, mainly based on gene technology. The revolution in high-throughput sequencing technology has given an increasing access to microbial genome sequences, which opens up new possibilities in the discovery of novel bioactive natural products. This development is reflected in a substantial revision and expansion of the book, but also removal of some sections containing products remotely associated with drugs. The new book also contains description of novel drugs marketed since the publication of the previous edition, especially in the field of diabetes, cancer and infection.

Book Monographs For Quality Evaluation Of Chinese Crude Drugs

Download or read book Monographs For Quality Evaluation Of Chinese Crude Drugs written by Zhengtao Wang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used for medication in China over thousands of years, and now become more and more accepted as a source of alternative and complementary medicine in western country.Today the chemical analysis is the dominant direction of the quality control system of TCM and natural medicines. But it is difficult to measure the quality for TCM herbs by detecting solely the presence / absence of a single or small number of marker components at very low concentration, especially for the herbs derived from mutliorigins and produced from wide localities, as well as those with unknown principle bioactive components. From this standpoint, it is necessary to use multidisciplinary technologies, integrating the morphological authentication and chemical analysis, qualitative detection and quantitative determination, and physic-chemical analysis and bioassay, in order to distinguish the authentic herb from the adulterant, the superior from the inferior, and to improve the standards of TCM herbs. This book includes 60 commonly used TCM herbs, each involving the following items: definition, location, action and indication, description, microscopic identification, TLC identification, HPLC/GC fingerprint identification (optional), assay, discussion and references. It is a valuable reference of quality evaluation for TCM herbs.Published by SCPG Publishing Corporation and distributed by World Scientific for all markets except China
