The next part covers the military record, an account of the 4th Battalion (TF) of the Queen's Regiment, ‘C’Squadron the Surrey Yeomanry and the Volunteer Battalion - all based in Croydon. Further descriptions follow, of the part played by civilian organisations and services, such as the police, the Fire Brigade, Medical and Hospital resources, various fund raising committees, Belgian refugees, food and fuel. There are plenty of photos of places and people. This is a comprehensive account of how the war affected the town.

Book excerpt: The best-selling singles artist of 1967 was not the Beatles, the Stones or the Who. It was Engelbert Humperdink. And in the year that Sergeant Pepper was released, the best-selling album was the soundtrack from The Sound of Music. The reality of the sixties often fails to live up to the hype. In this unique book, Peter Saunders - a professional sociologist - blends research findings with personal anecdotes to paint a picture of what life was really like for most kids growing up in Britain in the years following the Second World War. Drawing on his own experiences as a lad living in Croydon, as well as on social research from that period, he explores the changes in family life, education, sex, law and order and personal freedom that were taking place in those tumultuous years.

Book excerpt: London 2: South is a uniquely comprehensive guide to the twelve southern boroughs. Its riverside buildings range from the royal splendours of Hampton Court and Greenwich and the Georgian delights of Richmond, to the monuments of Victorian commerce in Lambeth and Southwark. But the book also charts lesser known suburbs, from former villages such as Clapham to still rural, Edwardian Chislehurst, as well as the results of twentieth-century planners' dreams from Roehampton to Thamesmead. Full accounts are given of London landmarks as diverse as Southwark Cathedral, Soane's Dulwich Picture Gallery and the arts complex of the South Bank. The outer boroughs include diverse former country houses - Edward IV's Eltham Palace, the Jacobean Charlton House, and the Palladian Marble Hill. The rich Victorian churches and school buildings are covered in detail, as are the exceptional structures of Kew Gardens.

Book excerpt: During the Second World War over 1.5 million of women found themselves thrust into a male working world, having to learn new skills within a matter of weeks. Their contribution to the war effort often remains unheralded, but it is without doubt that these women played a central role in an Allied victory. Kathleen Church-Bliss and Elsie Whiteman were two such women, who volunteered for war work and after a training course in engineering found themselves in an aircraft components factory. Thrown into a whole new world of industrial work, they kept a joint diary providing a unique insight into life in a wartime factory. It tells the tale of the poor conditions suffered on the factory floor, as well as the general disorganisation and bad management of this essential part of the war effort. They also describe how war work opened up a whole new world of social freedom for many women. This diary, tragic and humorous, brings women's war work vividly to life.

Book The Evolution of Airport Design

Download or read book The Evolution of Airport Design written by Robert Stewart and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-13 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to comprehensively cover the evolution of airport design, from the start of commercial aviation in 1919 to the present day. Many books have been written about airport design at a particular moment in history, but none have rigorously considered why, where, when and how the ideas we now take for granted originated. This book traces the history of airport design considering the philosophies adopted by designers, the functional layouts they have developed and the resultant form of the airport through a series of 40 case studies divided into 7 eras of approximately 20 years each. The themes include: The philosophies underpinning airport design The evolution of design responses How airports have avoided obsolescence Identification of the key turning points The evolution of master plans and terminal concepts in response to increasing traffic volumes The future of airports in terms of environmental sustainability and the Covid-19 hiatus The case studies are international, covering the USA, Germany, the UK, France, the Netherlands, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, Spain, United Arab Emirates, China, Turkey, Mexico, Australia and Poland. They are illustrated with full colour, many of which have not been published before and form part of an incredible graphic package. This book is essential reading for architects, engineers, planners and environmentalists alike.
