Book A Guide to Sugarbush Stocking Based on the Crown Diameter D b h Relationship of Open grown Sugar Maples

Download or read book A Guide to Sugarbush Stocking Based on the Crown Diameter D b h Relationship of Open grown Sugar Maples written by H. Clay Smith and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Sugarbush managers have long needed a guide for determining the stocking of their sugar maple stands. The question is: for desirable sugar maple sap production, how many trees per acre are needed? To provide information about stocking, the USDA Forest Service's sugar maple sap production project at Burlington, Vermont, has made a regionwide study of the relationships between crown diameter and d.b.h. (diameter breast high) of open-grown sugar maple trees (Acer saccharurn Marsh.). We found a strong relationship between crown diameter and d.b.h., and converted these data into stocking guides for various stand-size classes. The stocking guide are based on the assumption that trees with full crowns produce the best sap yields. S3.

Book The Effect of Xylem Age on Volume Yield Sugar Content of Sugar Maple Sap

Download or read book The Effect of Xylem Age on Volume Yield Sugar Content of Sugar Maple Sap written by Carter B. Gibbs and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Burlington, Vermont, research unit of the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, a study was begun in 1966 in an effort to identify the portions of the xylem that produce the most sap and the sap with the highest sugar content. The study revealed that the greatest volume of sap comes from xylem that is about 35 years old, and that the sweetest sap comes from the young xylem just beneath the bark.

Book Carbohydrate Reserves and Growth Response in Sugar Maple Acer Saccharum Marsh Under Two Levels of Spring Xylem Sap Extraction

Download or read book Carbohydrate Reserves and Growth Response in Sugar Maple Acer Saccharum Marsh Under Two Levels of Spring Xylem Sap Extraction written by Mark Louis Isselhardt and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The visual method for estimating root starch concentrations was adapted and evaluated for use with spring sugar maple twig tissue. The method of iodine-staining starch contained in xylem tissue was compared with starch detennined with the chemical method. There was little agreement between the two methods detennination of starch content. The highly dynamic nature of spring starch concentrations could help explain the result. Overall, the results of this work reveal no substantial threat to sugar maple growth or stored carbohydrates due to modem vacuum sap extraction and corresponding increases in NSC removal.
