Book excerpt: This thesis explores how the fearful conditions during commuting on public buses in Bangladesh, specifically in Dhaka and adjacent areas, reduce freedom of movement for both women and girls. Taking both qualitative and quantitative approaches, the thesis offers women’s experiences of harassment and violence in transit mode. Using qualitative feminist research methodology, the thesis signals the intersection of sex and gender-based violence and mobility. The case studies provide the horrific details of sexual violence against women and girls, including an important verdict given to the offenders. The thesis demonstrates that public transports are male-dominated, and males view women and girls as sex objects, a socio-cultural trend that challenges gender equity and empowerment of women and girls though Bangladesh has acknowledged gender issues, and women empowerment through the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development Goals. The thesis also offers an overview of the problematic legal framework of Bangladesh concentrating on the definition of “sexual harassment.” This limitation of law hinders the justice system and accelerates the hardships of the women and girls who experience sexual violence and harassment in public transport, and as a whole, people normalize such incidents and are reluctant to report them to law enforcement agencies. This thesis argues that the long-cherished tendency to underrate women and girls, and the existing law aligned with poor education, are the main catalysts of the ongoing rape culture in the country. This thesis concludes by making an important contribution to our understanding of the reasons for the inclusion of sex education and sexual socialization.

The concept of rape culture was initially embraced in popular media – mass media, social media, and popular culture – and contributed to a social understanding of sexual violence that mirrored feminist concerns about the persistence of rape myths and victim-blaming. However, it was later challenged by skeptics who framed the concept as a moral panic. Nickie D. Phillips documents how the conversation shifted from substantiating claims of a rape culture toward growing scrutiny of the prevalence of sexual assault on college campuses. This, in turn, renewed attention toward false allegations, and away from how college enforcement policies fail victims to how they endanger accused young men. Ultimately, she successfully lends insight into how the debates around rape culture, including microaggressions, gendered harassment and so-called political correctness, inform our collective imaginations and shape our attitudes toward criminal justice and policy responses to sexual violence.

Investigating anti-pornography debates from the 1980s, Violence Against Women Act advocacy materials, sexual assault forensic kits, public performances, and the #MeToo movement, Larson reveals how our language privileges male perspectives and, more deeply, how it is shaped by systems of power—patriarchy, white supremacy, ableism, and heteronormativity. Interrogating how these systems work to propagate masculine commitments to “science” and “hard evidence,” Larson finds that US culture holds a general mistrust of testimony by women, stereotyping it as “emotional.” But she also gives us hope for change, arguing that testimonies grounded in the bodily, material expression of violation are necessary for giving voice to victims of sexual violence and presenting, accurately, the scale of these crimes. Larson makes a case for visceral rhetorics, theorizing them as powerful forms of communication and persuasion. Demonstrating the communicative power of bodily feeling, Larson challenges the long-held commitment to detached, distant, rationalized discourses of sexual harassment and rape.
