Jesuit Education at the Crossroads tackles the lack of research on these schools by bringing together scattered studies and asking experts on the issues about the current challenges for Jesuit education. The landscape pictured by this collection of essays suggests that Jesuit primary and secondary education is at a historical moment, analogous to a crossroads. After a crisis between the 1960s and ‘80s, these schools were consolidated, establishing themselves in national and international networks. But the twenty-first century has brought new challenges. For instance, the secularization of culture is demanding an update of the Jesuit educational project; leadership is rapidly shifting from Jesuits to lay men and women, with multiple issues at stake; and researchers and policymakers are asking new questions about the role of these schools and school networks for equity and inclusion in each region. Book excerpt: This summary report from The Nation's Report Card offers a synthesis of findings from recent national assessments of American education for 9-, 13-, and 17-year-old students in a variety of subject areas. Areas covered include reading, writing, mathematics, science, American history, literature, and computer competence. Trends in academic achievement, levels of learning, and factors related to achievement are discussed. Since 1969, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has conducted regular surveys of student proficiency in a range of subjects, each involving a national sample of students; about 1.4 million students from a cross-section of grade levels have participated in the assessments to date. Findings from recent NAEP assessments provide evidence of progress in students' academic achievement. Results from the 1984 and 1986 assessments indicate that, on the average, students' proficiency in reading has improved; proficiency in writing, mathematics, and science has improved in recent assessments following earlier declines. Equity is being approached between minority students and their white peers. Student achievement gains are associated with time spent on homework, course rigor, participatory teaching, and supportive home environments. The findings also indicate a lack of significant advancement in the area of innovative and thoughtful application of knowledge. Descriptions of proficiency levels (levels 150, 200, 250, 300, and 350) for reading, mathematics, and science are appended in the form of sample test items. (TJH)

Book excerpt: This document reports on a congressional subcommittee's review of the federal role in education. The review included visits to 15 states and testimony from more than 225 principals, teachers, and other education stakeholders. The committee's purpose was to identify the steps that lead in the direction of either excellence or failure. The subcommittee found that successful schools and school systems were not the product of federal funding but instead were characterized by parents involved in the education of their children, local control, emphasis on basic academics, and dollars spent on the classroom. The central theme of the findings is that the federal government cannot consistently replicate success stories in the form of federal programs. Rather, the government should empower parents by reducing the family federal tax burden; encourage parental choice in education; return federal elementary and secondary education funds to states and local school districts through flexible grants; use federally funded education programs only for methods backed by reliable, replicable research; streamline and consolidate federal education programs; and reform or eliminate ineffective and inefficient programs. In short, the federal government should serve education as a research and statistics- gathering agency, disseminating findings and enabling states to share best practices with each other. The report was adopted by the subcommittee by a vote along Republican-Democrat party lines of 5-2. In Collisions at the Crossroads, Genevieve Carpio argues that mobility, both permission to move freely and prohibitions on movement, helped shape racial formation in the eastern suburbs of Los Angeles and the Inland Empire throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By examining policies and forces as different as historical societies, Indian boarding schools, bicycle ordinances, immigration policy, incarceration, traffic checkpoints, and Route 66 heritage, she shows how local authorities constructed a racial hierarchy by allowing some people to move freely while placing limits on the mobility of others.
