In Living at the Crossroads, authors Michael Goheen and Craig Bartholomew explore this question as they provide a general introduction to Christian worldview. Ideal for both students and lay readers, Living at the Crossroads lays out a brief summary of the biblical story and the most fundamental beliefs of Scripture. The book tells the story of Western culture from the classical period to postmodernity. The authors then provide an analysis of how Christians live in the tension that exists at the intersection of the biblical and cultural stories, exploring the important implications in key areas of life, such as education, scholarship, economics, politics, and church.

Download or read book Crossroads of the Eternal written by M. Brett Callaway and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not so long ago it was taken for granted that God exists. Today, there is a blindness to him even though he makes his presence known to all. The book begins by showing how better to recognize his presence and understand how he reveals himself to us. The next three chapters discuss how we move from an awareness of his presence to beginning to know him, and through a knowledge of him, begin to know what his purpose is for us and how our lives are shaped by that knowledge. Having seen how he reveals himself to us and how we know the world and see the world through different eyes, we then look at how to apply our new view in the face of a society that remains blind to this knowledge. Chapters 5-7 explore truth first from the standpoint of its existence, then in how to recognize its counterfeits, and finally to understand the consequences of its loss. Chapters 8-10 look at how and why being able to see God's hand in all aspects of life, and to center life on him by faith in his son Jesus Christ, completely changes life for the better. Non-Christians often hear this claim made by evangelists. If they ask why, too often the answer is in "Christian-speak" that is foreign to them. The intent is to bridge from the place where they are and explain how Christians have found peace in times of suffering, even joy in the most horrific circumstances, enabling them to give thanks in all things. In a sense, the book finishes where it started, by looking at who we truly are, what kind of world this is, and how God has made all into his glorious plan.

Download or read book Crossroads written by Ted Huizinga and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-03-22 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the dismayed and disappointed disciples making their way back home to Emmaus the Sunday afternoon following the crucifixion of Jesus, the resurrected Lord came alongside them and taught them all things concerning Himself from the scriptures beginning with Moses and the prophets. From scripture, He showed them how a crucified Messiah fulfilled all which had been written concerning His redemptive work as Immanuel (God with us). He opened their eyes to understand God’s salvation plan for fallen man and His role in completing that work. This daily devotional seeks to show how scripture reveals the Lord Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, and He stands at the crossroads between eternal life with God and eternal life separated from God. It is my sincerest prayer and desire that you will see His glory reflected in the scriptural texts for each day, the associated meditations of my heart, and be compelled to take up your cross and follow Him to victory and glory. “To my wife, Carol and sons: Thomas, Michael and Solomon. I would not have written this book were it not for you and our mutual loved ones.”

Book excerpt: Combining history, ethnography, and culture theory, this book explores how residents in northwestern Malawi have responded over time to the early missionary assertion that local religious and healing practices were incompatible with Christianity and western medicine. It details how local agents, in the past and today, have constructed new cultural forms that weave facets of ancestral spiritualism and divination with Christianity and biomedicine. Alongside a rich historical review of the late-19th century encounter between Tumbuka-speakers and the Scottish Presbyterians of the Livingstonia Mission, the book explores the contemporary therapeutic dance complex known as Vimbuza and considers two case studies, each the story of a man confronting illness and struggling to understand the roots and meaning of his affliction. In the process, the book considers the enduring missiological and anthropological topics of conversion and syncretism, and questions the assertion by some scholars that Western missionaries in Africa have been successful agents of religious hegemony.

Book The Eternal Crossroads

Download or read book The Eternal Crossroads written by Leon V. Driskell and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flannery O'Connor was a writer of extraordinary power and virtuosity. Her strong supple prose blends humor, pathos, satire, and grotesquerie which leads the reader to the evil at the center of the self's labyrinth. There, she confronts that evil with originality and power, pulling the reader into consideration of the terrifying dependencies of love in the recesses of the heart. This study focuses on Flannery O'Connor's sense of the coincidence of the eternal and cosmic with worldly time and place—"the eternal crossroads"— and how that sense controls and infuses her fiction. From an examination of various influences upon Miss O'Connor's work—Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Mauriac, Nathaniel West, and Hawthorne—the authors consider her novels and stories, as well as several stories never collected. Their textual analysis shows that her structures, images, motifs, and symbols became vehicles for anagogical meaning as she progressed from early promise to artistic fulfillment. Considering Miss O'Connor's own comments on her writing, the authors illuminate some frequently misunderstood features of her work, such as her "grotesques" and her stress on death and violence. In so doing they make an important contribution to our understanding of how Flannery O'Connor arrived at "the eternal crossroads."

Book excerpt: The author identifies aspects of her belief system as depicted through the life of the main character of this story, Rebekah. Julia has no doubt that all people have value and the ability to contribute in some form to the betterment of the human condition. People bring this reality to life in varying degrees, depending not only on their choices but on the choices made by the influencers in our lives. The experiences discussed in this book demonstrate how people can continue to repeat patterns when left to their own accord rather than choosing to rely on God and the wisdom imparted through the teachings of Jesus Christ. The experiences shared from Rebekahs life brings evidence of what can happen when people rely on their own merit and efforts, void of godly wisdom. We as human beings will continue to fail in one way or another to do right if left to our own design. We all could use some guidance and can benefit from that shared by others, yet Rebekahs life experiences provide clear evidence that not all advice is God-breathed. The author exemplifies through Rebekahs colorful life experiences that it is never too late in life to even have a faith like a mustard seed to start trusting in the basic instructions of life that are found in the pages of the Holy Bible. As long as we have breath in us, Julia believes it is never too late to make new choices that can change the course of ones life. Each day we all have new choices to make, new words to speak, and new actions to take. What will yours be?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Franzen’s gift for wedding depth and vividness of character with breadth of social vision has never been more dazzlingly evident than in Crossroads. It’s December 23, 1971, and heavy weather is forecast for Chicago. Russ Hildebrandt, the associate pastor of a liberal suburban church, is on the brink of breaking free of a marriage he finds joyless—unless his wife, Marion, who has her own secret life, beats him to it. Their eldest child, Clem, is coming home from college on fire with moral absolutism, having taken an action that will shatter his father. Clem’s sister, Becky, long the social queen of her high-school class, has sharply veered into the counterculture, while their brilliant younger brother Perry, who’s been selling drugs to seventh graders, has resolved to be a better person. Each of the Hildebrandts seeks a freedom that each of the others threatens to complicate. Jonathan Franzen’s novels are celebrated for their unforgettably vivid characters and for their keen-eyed take on contemporary America. Now, in Crossroads, Franzen ventures back into the past and explores the history of two generations. With characteristic humor and complexity, and with even greater warmth, he conjures a world that resonates powerfully with our own. A tour de force of interwoven perspectives and sustained suspense, its action largely unfolding on a single winter day, Crossroads is the story of a Midwestern family at a pivotal moment of moral crisis. Jonathan Franzen’s gift for melding the small picture and the big picture has never been more dazzlingly evident.

Book Christology at the Crossroads

Download or read book Christology at the Crossroads written by Jon Sobrino and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2002-11-20 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Gutierrez has done for overall theological understanding, what Segundo has done for theological method, and what Miranda has done for biblical studies, Jon Sobrino has now done for Christology; He has provided a substantial and enduring theological contribution from a Third World perspective. This book will have long life, since it not only argues for the necessity of a Christology 'from the underside of history, ' but offers an extensive example of how such a Christology should be constructed, showing the basic connection between the radical historicity of Jesus and the suffering and pain of oppressed people. The thoroughness of the author's survey of other positions, the fullness of his documentation, and the pervasive power of his own affirmations make clear that 'Christology at the Crossroads' will not leave us stranded at the crossroads but will start us down exciting and demanding new paths. Robert McAfee Brown Professor of Ecumenics and World Christianity, Union Theological Seminary The publication of 'Christology at the Crossroads' in English is most opportune. It is not only the Christology presented in this book, but the Christology of the church at large (indeed of the churches) that stands at the crossroads at present. Those of us who have been working in this field know that in order to break through some deadlocked situations we need a Christology more soberly rooted in soteriology, more honestly founded upon the historical Jesus, and more realistically turned towards a future yet to be realized. Yet in the affluent and basically contented northern nations of the western world, this kind of Christology has not so far been written. To find it one must turn to the Third World theologians for the present, and among these Jon Sobrino's book is a landmark. Monika K. Hellwig Associate Professor of Theology, Georgetown Universit

Book The Crossroads

  • ISBN : 1490866639
  • Pages : 179 pages

Download or read book The Crossroads written by Brett Heintzman and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-01-21 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weve lost our way, and God is calling us to return to Him. Every church walks a path, comprised of methods, programs, worship styles, etc. The paths our churches travel may have served us well in the past, but they are losing their effectiveness with every passing day. Christian churches in America are facing the challenge of decline, yet many cling to their current paths expecting fresh results of revival and renewal. We are deceived and need direction. God told Israel through the prophet Jeremiah, This is what the LORD says: Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, We will not walk in it (Jeremiah 6:16 NIV). Today, churches are standing at a crossroads. The Crossroads is a critical point of decision that can mean life and fruitfulness or death and extinction, depending on the choices we make today. Will we stay on the unfruitful paths, or will we seek God for the ancient paths of His choosing: Paths of Holy Spirit power and Kingdom purposes? At the crossroads, the choice must be made. The Crossroads points the way to the ancient paths of true Kingdom fruitfulness.
