Book Crossing the Snow Bridge

Download or read book Crossing the Snow Bridge written by Fatima Lim-Wilson and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The manananggal, a supernatural character in Filipino folklore, flies at night seeking prey, her winged upper torso casting shadows from the moonlit sky while the lower part of her body waits patiently below. In this fascinating new collection, Crossing the Snow Bridge, Fatima Lim-Wilson explores the similarly split experience of the immigrant in the United States." "An inhabitant of this country for five years, Lim-Wilson's legal status is that of "resident alien," a disturbing but apt description given the clash of cultures the immigrant encounters daily. Although she still dreams in her native Tagalog, Lim-Wilson writes in her borrowed language, and it is through attempting to understand the cleaving of her own tongue that she works to redefine her place and that of other immigrants here." "How can memories of green mangoes, miniature fish, and the landscape of seven thousand islands fit in with, let alone contribute to, a North American cultural identity? Yet a great part of that cultural identity is built upon the immigrant experience. In telling stories of the Philippines and of the United States, these poems build a metaphorical bridge over which we can cross between cultures."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Asian American Poets

Download or read book Asian American Poets written by Guiyou Huang and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-05-30 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though Asian American literature is enjoying an impressive critical popularity, attention has focused primarily on longer narrative forms such as the novel. And despite the proliferation of a large number of poets of Asian descent in the 20th century, Asian American poetry remains a neglected area of study. Poetry as an elite genre has not reached the level of popularity of the novel or short story, partly due to the difficulties of reading and interpreting poetic texts. The lack of criticism on Asian American poetry speaks to the urgent need for scholarship in this area, since perhaps more than any other genre, poetry most forcefully captures the intense feelings and emotions that Asian Americans have experienced about themselves and their world. This reference book overviews the tremendous cultural contributions of Asian American poets. Included are alphabetically arranged entries on 48 American poets of Asian descent, most of whom have been active during the latter half of the 20th century. Each entry begins with a short biography, which sometimes includes information drawn from personal interviews. The entries then discuss the poet's major works and themes, including such concerns as family, racism, sexism, identity, language, and politics. A survey of the poet's critical reception follows. In many cases the existing criticism is scant, and the entries offer new readings of neglected works. The entries conclude with bibliographies of primary and secondary texts, and the volume closes with a selected, general bibliography.

Book excerpt: CLICK HERE to download a sample from Crossing Denali • A gripping adventure set on North America's highest mountain • Inspirational story of a transformative experience • A tale that any reader can connect with Since slowly transforming himself from an overweight and overworked chain-smoker into a two-time marathon runner, Michael Fenner had climbed one glaciated peak—Mount Rainier in Washington State. Nonetheless, he embarks on a journey to the wilds of Alaska and the unknowns of North America’s highest and most dangerous peak for what he hopes will be the adventure of a lifetime: a traverse of Mount McKinley (Denali), ascending up the West Buttress route to the summit, and then down the more ominous and treacherous Karstens Ridge and Muldrow Glacier. In Crossing Denali, Michael describes in gripping detail how he and five other mountaineers, with their three guides, lug hundreds of pounds of gear from camp to camp, living an exhausting if simple life of climbing, digging, eating, sleeping. The well-traveled route along the West Buttress lulls him and his fellow teammates into a false sense of confidence. But once they cross Denali Pass and begin the descent down the northern side of the mountain, Denali unleashes its famed worst. The harrowing journey that follows nearly breaks Michael's spirit and body, and forever changes him. Crossing Denali is a novice mountaineer’s tale that will inspire dreamers and other aspiring mountaineers to seek adventure and transform their lives.
