Book Crossed Products of von Neumann Algebras by Equivalence Relations and Their Subalgebras

Download or read book Crossed Products of von Neumann Algebras by Equivalence Relations and Their Subalgebras written by Igor Fulman and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author introduces and studies the construction of the crossed product of a von Neumann algebra. This construction is the generalization of the construction of the crossed product of an abelian von Neumann algebra by an equivalence relation introduced by J. Feldman and C. C. Moore. Many properties of this construction are proved in the general case. In addition, the generalizations of the Spectral Theorem on Bimodules and of the theorem on dilations are proved.

Book Crossed Products of C Algebras Topological Dynamics and Classification

Download or read book Crossed Products of C Algebras Topological Dynamics and Classification written by Thierry Giordano and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects the notes of the lectures given at an Advanced Course on Dynamical Systems at the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) in Barcelona. The notes consist of four series of lectures. The first one, given by Andrew Toms, presents the basic properties of the Cuntz semigroup and its role in the classification program of simple, nuclear, separable C*-algebras. The second series of lectures, delivered by N. Christopher Phillips, serves as an introduction to group actions on C*-algebras and their crossed products, with emphasis on the simple case and when the crossed products are classifiable. The third one, given by David Kerr, treats various developments related to measure-theoretic and topological aspects of crossed products, focusing on internal and external approximation concepts, both for groups and C*-algebras. Finally, the last series of lectures, delivered by Thierry Giordano, is devoted to the theory of topological orbit equivalence, with particular attention to the classification of minimal actions by finitely generated abelian groups on the Cantor set.

Book Decision Problems for Equational Theories of Relation Algebras

Download or read book Decision Problems for Equational Theories of Relation Algebras written by H. Andréka and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We prove that any variety of relation algebras which contains an algebra with infinitely many elements below the identity, or which contains the full group relation algebra on some infinite group (or on arbitrarily large finite groups), must have an undecidable equational theory. Then we construct an embedding of the lattice of all subsets of the natural numbers into the lattice of varieties of relation algebras such that the variety correlated with a set [italic capital]X of natural numbers has a decidable equational theory if and only if [italic capital]X is a decidable (i.e., recursive) set. Finally, we construct an example of an infinite, finitely generated, simple, representable relation algebra that has a decidable equational theory.'' -- Abstract.

Book Relations Related to Betweenness Their Structure and Automorphisms

Download or read book Relations Related to Betweenness Their Structure and Automorphisms written by Samson Adepoju Adeleke and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is about tree-like structures, namely semilinear ordering, general betweenness relations, C-relations and D-relations. It contains a systematic study of betweenness and introduces C- and D- relations to describe the behaviour of points at infinity (leaves or ends or directions of trees). The focus is on structure theorems and on automorphism groups, with applications to the theory of infinite permutation groups.

Book Extended Affine Lie Algebras and Their Root Systems

Download or read book Extended Affine Lie Algebras and Their Root Systems written by Bruce Normansell Allison and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is about extended affine Lie algebras (EALA's) and their root systems. EALA's were introduced by Høegh-Krohn and Torresani under the name irreducible quasi-simple Lie algebras. The major objective is to develop enough theory to provide a firm foundation for further study of EALA's. The first chapter of the paper is devoted to establishing some basic structure theory. It includes a proof of the fact that, as conjectured by Kac, the invariant symmetric bilinear form on an EALA can be scaled so that its restriction to the real span of the root system is positive semi-definite. The second chapter studies extended affine root systems (EARS) which are an axiomatized version of the root systems arising from EALA's. The concept of a semilattice is used to give a complete description of EARS. In the final chapter, a number of new examples of extended affine Lie algebras are given. The concluding appendix contains an axiomatic characterization of the nonisotropic roots in an EARS in a more general context than the one used in the rest of the paper.

Book Combinatorial Theory of the Free Product with Amalgamation and Operator Valued Free Probability Theory

Download or read book Combinatorial Theory of the Free Product with Amalgamation and Operator Valued Free Probability Theory written by Roland Speicher and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free probability theory, introduced by Voiculescu, has developed very actively in the last few years and has had an increasing impact on quite different fields in mathematics and physics. Whereas the subject arose out of the field of von Neumann algebras, presented here is a quite different view of Voiculescu's amalgamated free product. This combinatorial description not only allows re-proving of most of Voiculescu's results in a concise and elegant way, but also opens the way for many new results. Unlike other approaches, this book emphasizes the combinatorial structure of the concept of ``freeness''. This gives an elegant and easily accessible description of freeness and leads to new results in unexpected directions. Specifically, a mathematical framework for otherwise quite ad hoc approximations in physics emerges.

Book Operators of Class C 0 with Spectra in Multiply Connected Regions

Download or read book Operators of Class C 0 with Spectra in Multiply Connected Regions written by Adele Zucchi and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present paper the author studies the analogue of the class [italic capital]C0 within a class of operators having a functional calculus based on the algebra of bounded holomorphic functions in a finitely connected domain with an analytic boundary. The latter class consists of the operators having the closure of the domain as a spectral set and having no normal direct summands with spectra contained in the boundary of the domain. (If the domain is the disk the preceding class reduces to the class of completely nonunitary contractions.) The basic properties known for the case of the disk, including the model theory, are established. The extension, even the mere construction of the functional calculus, is not routine, in part because it is unknown whether the analogue of Sz.-Nagy's dilation theorem is true in the author's multiply connected setting.

Book Classification of Simple C algebras Inductive Limits of Matrix Algebras over Trees

Download or read book Classification of Simple C algebras Inductive Limits of Matrix Algebras over Trees written by Liangqing Li and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, it is shown that the simple unital C*-algebras arising as inductive limits of sequences of finite direct sums of matrix algebras over [italic capital]C([italic capital]X[subscript italic]i), where [italic capital]X[subscript italic]i are arbitrary variable trees, are classified by K-theoretical and tracial data. This result generalizes the result of George Elliott of the case of [italic capital]X[subscript italic]i = [0, 1]. The added generality is useful in the classification of more general inductive limit C*-algebras.

Book Some Structural Results for Measured Equivalence Relations and Their Associated Von Neumann Algebras

Download or read book Some Structural Results for Measured Equivalence Relations and Their Associated Von Neumann Algebras written by Daniel Joseph Hoff and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using Popa's deformation/rigidity theory, we investigate prime decompositions of von Neumann algebras of the form $L(\mathcal{R})$ for countable probability measure preserving (pmp) equivalence relations $\mathcal{R}$. We show that $L(\mathcal{R})$ is prime whenever $\mathcal{R}$ is non-amenable, ergodic, and admits an unbounded 1-cocycle into a mixing orthogonal representation weakly contained in the regular representation. This is accomplished by constructing the \emph{Gaussian extension $\tilde{\mathcal{R}}$ of $\mathcal{R}$} and subsequently an s-malleable deformation of the inclusion $L(\mathcal{R}) \subset L(\tilde{\mathcal{R}})$. We go on to note a general obstruction to unique prime factorization, and avoiding it, we prove a unique prime factorization result for products of the form $L(\mathcal{R}_1) \otimes L(\mathcal{R}_2) \otimes \cdots \otimes L(\mathcal{R}_k)$. As a corollary, we get a unique factorization result in the equivalence relation setting for products of the form $\mathcal{R}_1 \times \mathcal{R}_2 \times \cdots \times \mathcal{R}_k$. We then study extensions of pmp equivalence relations $\mathcal{R}$ following the joint work \cite{BHI15} with Lewis Bowen and Adrian Ioana. By extending the techniques of Gaboriau and Lyons \cite{GL07}, we prove that if $\mathcal{R}$ is non-amenable and ergodic, it has an extension $\tilde{\mathcal{R}}$ which contains the orbits of a free ergodic pmp action of the free group $\mathbb F_2$. This allows us to prove that any such $\mathcal{R}$ admits uncountably many ergodic extensions which are pairwise not (stably) von Neumann equivalent. We further deduce that any non-amenable unimodular locally compact second countable group admits uncountably many free ergodic pmp actions which are pairwise not von Neumann equivalent (hence, pairwise not orbit equivalent).

Book Algebraic and Strong Splittings of Extensions of Banach Algebras

Download or read book Algebraic and Strong Splittings of Extensions of Banach Algebras written by William G. Bade and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, the authors address the following: Let $A$ be a Banach algebra, and let $\sum\:\ 0\rightarrow I\rightarrow\frak A\overset\pi\to\longrightarrow A\rightarrow 0$ be an extension of $A$, where $\frak A$ is a Banach algebra and $I$ is a closed ideal in $\frak A$. The extension splits algebraically (respectively, splits strongly) if there is a homomorphism (respectively, continuous homomorphism) $\theta\: A\rightarrow\frak A$ such that $\pi\circ\theta$ is the identity on $A$. Consider first for which Banach algebras $A$ it is true that every extension of $A$ in a particular class of extensions splits, either algebraically or strongly, and second for which Banach algebras it is true that every extension of $A$ in a particular class which splits algebraically also splits strongly. These questions are closely related to the question when the algebra $\frak A$ has a (strong) Wedderburn decomposition. The main technique for resolving these questions involves the Banach cohomology group $\cal H2(A,E)$ for a Banach $A$-bimodule $E$, and related cohomology groups. Later chapters are particularly concerned with the case where the ideal $I$ is finite-dimensional. Results are obtained for many of the standard Banach algebras $A$.

Book Generalized Symplectic Geometries and the Index of Families of Elliptic Problems

Download or read book Generalized Symplectic Geometries and the Index of Families of Elliptic Problems written by Liviu I. Nicolaescu and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, an index theorem is proved for arbitrary families of elliptic boundary value problems for Dirac operators and a surgery formula for the index of a family of Dirac operators on a closed manifold. Also obtained is a very general result on the cobordism invariance of the index of a family. All results are established by first symplectically rephrasing the problems and then using a generalized symplectic reduction technique. This provides a unified approach to all possible parameter spaces and all possible symmetries of a Dirac operator (eigh symmetries in the real case and two in the complex case). This text will also be of interest to those working in geometry and topology.

Book Generalized Minkowski Content Spectrum of Fractal Drums Fractal Strings and the Riemann Zeta Functions

Download or read book Generalized Minkowski Content Spectrum of Fractal Drums Fractal Strings and the Riemann Zeta Functions written by Christina Q. He and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir provides a detailed study of the effect of non power-like irregularities of (the geometry of) the fractal boundary on the spectrum of "fractal drums" (and especially of "fractal strings"). In this work, the authors extend previous results in this area by using the notionof generalized Minkowski content which is defined through some suitable "gauge functions" other than power functions. (This content is used to measure the irregularity (or "fractality") of the boundary of an open set in R]n by evaluating the volume of its small tubular neighborhoods). In the situation when the power function is not the natural "gauge function", this enables the authors to obtain more precise estimates, with a broader potential range of applications than in previous papers of the second author and his collaborators. This text will also be of interest to those working in mathematical physics.

Book Cyclic Feedback Systems

Download or read book Cyclic Feedback Systems written by Tomáš Gedeon and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the global dynamics of a class of ordinary differential equations called cyclic feedback systems. The global dynamics is described by a Morse decomposition of the global attractor, defined with the help of a discrete Lyapunov function. A three-dimensional system of ODE's with two linear equations is constructed, such that the invariant set is at least as complicated as a suspension of a full shift on two symbols. No index. Book Higher Initial Ideals of Homogeneous Ideals

Download or read book Higher Initial Ideals of Homogeneous Ideals written by Gunnar Fløystad and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given a homogeneous ideal I and a monomial order, the initials ideal in (I) can be formed. The initial idea gives information about I, but quite a lot of information is also lost. The author remedies this by defining a series of higher initial ideals of a homogenous ideal, and considers the case when I is the homogenous ideal of a curve in P3 and the monomial order is reverse lexicographic. Book Axiomatic Stable Homotopy Theory

Download or read book Axiomatic Stable Homotopy Theory written by Mark Hovey and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We define and investigate a class of categories with formal properties similar to those of the homotopy category of spectra. This class includes suitable versions of the derived category of modules over a commutative ring, or of comodules over a commutative Hopf algebra, and is closed under Bousfield localization. We study various notions of smallness, questions about representability of (co)homology functors, and various kinds of localization. We prove theorems analogous to those of Hopkins and Smith about detection of nilpotence and classification of thick subcategories. We define the class of Noetherian stable homotopy categories, and investigate their special properties. Finally, we prove that a number of categories occurring in nature (including those mentioned above) satisfy our axioms.
