Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crossed Hearts is the second novel in beloved bestselling author Barbara Delinsky's Matchmaker trilogy about a woman who makes up crossword puzzles for a living-and a man who just might be the answer to L-O-V-E in her life... Leah Gates always enjoys a good challenge-with words or otherwise. Still, she should have known better than to leave New York City for this. Knee-deep mud, lashing rain, a burned-down cabin...so much for the R&R that she hoped to find in rural New Hampshire. What had her friend Victoria Lesser been thinking? Woodsman Garrick Rodenheiser was stunned and wary when Leah turned up shivering on his porch. A beautiful woman, miles from nowhere, spelled trouble for him. But he couldn't just slam the door in her face-or shut out the storm of passion that raged between them... Originally published as Twelve Across.

It wasn’t my first idea, originally I wanted to be an archeologist specializing in Egyptology when I was in middle school I studied everything I could about the culture the history and even how to read hieroglyphs but for all my studies and hard work fate had a twist to throw into my well planned life, I developed seizures at the age of 14 which got worse when I turned 15. I was shaken to the core when my doctor said that I would have to change my dream because my medication would be unavailable where I wanted to attend college in three years. I started going to the school library and reading Edgar Allen Poe and all mythologies that I could get my hands on. Even after all my seizures I can still remember my love for myth and legends even if the rest should come back in pieces like a puzzle. I took a creative writing course in high school and that is when I found that I have a true spark for writing poetry. watched many friends graduate including my high school sweetheart but I kept working for my diploma until I received it in 2004. Now though my seizures are not controlled and none of my doctors know what causes them I write to keep the worries at bay and because I love to write. If you are going through the same thing or just a health issue that you don’t know how to cope with you just need to focus and remember even the small dreams come true if you help them.

Download or read book Global Cultures written by Elisabeth Young-Bruehl and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 1994-12-09 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An anthology of 62 stories from around the non-Euro-American world providing new definitions of cultural diversity and commonality and an invaluable tool for teachers responding to the growing need for multicultural literature. Over the past two decades, sweeping political changes and burgeoning new technologies have resulted in communities being increasingly defined in global as well as regional and national terms. Although the intellectual terra nova of world cultures remains largely uncharted, this anthology of sixty-two stories from around the non-Euro-American world provides what Elisabeth Young-Bruehl calls "an introductory map to the great wealth of literary works now being produced in, at once, the particular settings of the writers' experiences and the global setting." Young-Bruehl finds that while the cultural diversity the stories exemplify is amazing, so too is the similarity in thematic terms of the concerns that this diversity presents. Thus she organized Global Cultures thematically to highlight and clarify how these worldwide cultures both converge and diverge. A comprehensive general introduction outlines forces behind the transnational approach to literary study and chapter introductions contextualize each story. Stories from India, Cuba, South Africa, and Uruguay are connected by the theme of exile and immigration; tales from Nigeria, Guatemala, Cameroon, and Egypt share a theme of political violence and civil uprisings; works from Taiwan, Chile, Jamaica, and Syria describe commonalities of women facing effects of modernization, prejudice, war, and immigration. Global Cultures contributes to the fast-growing body of contemporary short fictions newly available in English and is an invaluable resource to meet the need for multicultural literature.
Download or read book Deep in Our Hearts written by Joan C. Browning and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2002-03-01 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep in Our Hearts is an eloquent and powerful book that takes us into the lives of nine young women who came of age in the 1960s while committing themselves actively and passionately to the struggle for racial equality and justice. These compelling first-person accounts take us back to one of the most tumultuous periods in our nation’s history--to the early days of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), the Albany Freedom Ride, voter registration drives and lunch counter sit-ins, Freedom Summer, the 1964 Democratic Convention, and the rise of Black Power and the women’s movement. The book delves into the hearts of the women to ask searching questions. Why did they, of all the white women growing up in their hometowns, cross the color line in the days of segregation and join the Southern Freedom Movement? What did they see, do, think, and feel in those uncertain but hopeful days? And how did their experiences shape the rest of their lives?

Download or read book Conversations with Quijote written by Arturo Lewis Jaramillo and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love is the most consequential of all human emotions. To experience it is elation; to express it is to speak from the heart; to receive it, the finest moment; to lose it, the worst day; and to write about it is poetry. This book is a literary quest for love in its most idyllic form and the author’s journey, as a young man, to reconcile the love he discovers with reality. Using verse and prose in contrasting styles in collaboration with his imaginary sixteenth century mentor, the famous Don Quijóte de La Mancha, the author explores the depth and breadth of love in a literary style quite unlike most anthologies of poetry. Set in the late 1960s, the poet’s work explores a succession of romantic relationships influenced, pointedly, by the “love generation,” its freedoms, imagination and contradictions. As the author describes it, “it’s a series of love stories told, day by day, in a most unique and lyrical way.” While the pace, distractions and complexities of present-day America lessen our ability to be in love, Conversations with Quijóte reawakens the reader to the sensations and sensibilities of true romance, its rewards and consequences.
