Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SLD experiment at the Stanford Linear Collider reports new measurements of leptonic asymmetry parameters with polarized Z[sup 0]'s. The authors study the reaction e[sub L, R][sup -] + e[sup +] [yields] Z[sup 0] [yields] e[sup +]e[sup -], [mu][sup +][mu][sup -] and [tau][sup -][tau][sup +], where L and R denote left- and right-handed polarized electron beams. The 1996, 1997 and winter 1998 SLD runs are included in this analysis and combined with published data from the 1993-95 runs. Preliminary results are as follows: A[sub e] = 0.1504 [+-] 0.0072, A[sub [mu]] = 0.120 [+-] 0.019 and A[sub [tau]] = 0.142 [+-] 0.019. If lepton universality is assumed, a combined asymmetry parameter A[sub e[mu][tau]] = 0.1459 [+-] 0.0063 results. This translates into an effective value of the weak mixing angle sin[sup 2] [theta][sub W][sup eff] = 0.2317 [+-] 0.008 at the Z[sup 0] pole.

Book excerpt: We report new direct measurements of the Z°-lepton coupling asymmetry parameters A{sub e}, A{sub {mu}} and A{sub r}, with polarized Z°'s collected by the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. The parameters are extracted from the measurement of the left-right-forward-backward asymmetries for each lepton species. The 1996, 1997 and 1998 SLD runs are included in this analysis and combined with published data from the 1993-95 runs. Preliminary results are A{sub e} = 0.1558 ± 0.0064, A{sub {mu}} = 0.137 ± 0.016 and A{sub {tau}} = 0.142 ± 0.016. If lepton universality is assumed, a combined asymmetry parameter A{sub l} = 0.1523 ± 0.0057 results. This translates into an effective weak mixing angle sin2 [theta]{sub W}{sup eff} = 0.23085 ± 0.00073 at the Z° resonance.

Book excerpt: The Stanford Linear Collider at SLAC is an e[sup +]e[sup [minus]] collider running at [radical]s [approx] M[sub Z] and has provided an electron beam with longitudinal polarization at the SLC interaction point. The 1992 polarized run data were taken with the SLD detector. The author presents here the measurement of the left-right cross section asymmetry (A[sub LR]) for the 1992 run. The polarized run began in May and ended in September of 1992 at a mean center-of-mass energy of 91.56 GeV. Tower hit information of the liquid argon calorimeter and endcap warm iron calorimeter pads were used for selecting hadronic Z[sup 0] or tau pair events. The SLD detector collected about 11,000 events during this run. The magnitude of the longitudinal polarization of the electron beam was continuously measured by a polarimeter based on Compton scattering, and was monitored by a polarimeter based on Moller scattering. The luminosity-weighted average longitudinal polarization during the 1992 run was measured as 22.4 [+-] 0.6 (syst.)%. From these data, the value of A[sub LR] has been measured to be 0.102 [+-] 0.044 (stat.) [+-] 0.003 (syst.), corresponding to an effective electroweak mixing angle (sin[sup 2][theta][sub w][sup eff]) of 0.2375 [+-] 0.0056 (stat.) [+-] 0.0004 (syst.). The error is dominated by the statistical error. This value of sin[sup 2][theta][sub w][sup eff] is in good agreement with existing measurements from other experiments. Studies of improvements in A[sub LR] event selection for future high-statistics runs are also discussed.
