Book excerpt: This research breaks new ground in identifying cross-culturally common family environment traits that correlate with children's high academic achievement. A multi- method approach involving both qualitative and well established, validated quantitative research methods was employed to measure the home environment from a social and educational perspective. The modified What is Happening in this Classroom (WIHIC) instrument questionnaire was used to determine if academically successful students and their parents hold similar perceptions of their home environment as an educational environment. The Family Environment Scale (FES) instrument questionnaire was used to measure family social environment for comparison to whole population norms and to identify common behavioral traits among the studied groups. The sample consisted of 180 academically high achieving adolescents and their families from the United States, Japan, and Greece. In addition to its cultural diversity, the study group was widely varied in lifestyle, being drawn from urban, suburban, and rural areas. Interviews conducted by the researcher at the homes of the participants were used to complement the quantitative data and contributed to further understanding of the cultural, social, and ethnic factors that influence home environment. The study identified and describes crossculturally common behavioral traits among the families of academically high achieving students that transcended culture, language, economic status, and geographic location.
