Book Cross Country with Horse and Hound

Download or read book Cross Country with Horse and Hound written by Frank Sherman Peer and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1902 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strange as it may seem, there never has been a book published in America on the subject of cross country riding to hounds. Having moved into a hunting country without previous knowledge of the sport, the author undertook to follow the hounds after witnessing a run from a friend's carriage. To his chagrin, he discovered how much he had been against the unwritten laws of the hunting field, and he determined to place in the hands of similar uninitiated ones something in the nature of a guide. This work is therefore intended to give the novice an insight into the game from the point of view both of hunting and of riding, so that he may obtain from the sport a full measure of the delights it has to offer. The author has had considerable experience in breeding, rearing, and schooling hunters and has been fortunate in bringing to this work quite extensive observations of many different packs of hounds in European countries, as well as in the United States and Canada. His chief aim is to encourage this most noble sport for sport's sake, to contrast the genuine sportsman with the artificial, and to pay to that noblest of animals, the horse, and especially the "hunter," a debt of gratitude for many a glorious hour in his company.

As foxhunting grew in popularity, literary works that covered the sport flourished, as well. In Six Centuries of Foxhunting: An Annotated Bibliography, M. L. Biscotti has compiled all books produced in Great Britain and the United States that pertain to, or mention, foxhunting with hounds. Arranged alphabetically by author, more than 2000 titles are included. Each entry features details such as place and year of publication, publisher, book size, page count, illustrations, and binding. Nearly every title is also annotated with a description of the book’s contents, and biographical sketches are provided for the most notable authors. Narratives, histories, illustrated works, verse, fiction, and even anti-hunting literature all have their place in this volume. Six Centuries of Foxhunting also features more than thirty images of book covers and foxhunting illustrations. With appendixes that contain author, title, and illustrator time lines, and separate author and title indexes, this comprehensive bibliography is a valuable resource for researchers, book dealers and collectors, and foxhunters.

Book The Hunting Field With Horse and Hound in America

Download or read book The Hunting Field With Horse and Hound in America written by Frank Sherman Peer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hunting Field With Horse and Hound in America: The British Isles and France Blessed be the thoughts and recollections That drive the ills and cares of life away, While they bring again serene reflections Of all the joys we had along the way. Cross Country with Horse and Hound" has proved a happy disappointment, especially to the author. There being but few hunt clubs in America, it was argued that there were comparatively few who were personally interested in cross country riding to hounds; it was therefore with some misgivings that the book was brought to light. The effort, however, has received such hearty endorsement from the reading public in general, and has had such pleasant things said about it by the hunting fraternity in particular, both in England and America, that the writing of this second work has become doubly enjoyable. It may be said to have been undertaken in response to an encore. Next to a cross country ride itself, comes the pleasure of living it over again with whoever has the ear for hearing it, and an imagination keen enough to supply what neither pen nor pencil is able to produce. There seems to be born in every man a taste for country life and in most men a love for the chase. We probably inherit our longing for the fields from our mother Eve, whose desire to return to the garden must have been very great, so great in fact, that the world will never stand long enough to see it eradicated from the system of her descendants. Book Still Horse Crazy After All These Years

Download or read book Still Horse Crazy After All These Years written by James Wofford and published by Trafalgar Square Books. This book was released on 2021-06-16 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare insider’s look at the life of a professional sportsman as he tries to reconcile the passion that drives him with livelihood, family, and aging. Three-time Olympian Jim Wofford grew up with horses, beginning with his childhood on a Kansas farm in the forties. The son of an Olympic show jumper, Wofford and his siblings all found themselves pursuing a “riding life”—one of reward and growth, of challenge and disappointment, but mostly of learning to understand and work with a complex animal as an athletic partner and friend. Over the years Wofford developed as an international competitor, successful coach, and sought-after commentator. Known for his wit, irreverence, and whip-smart observations on the sport and its participants, as well as the state of the “outside” world, his magazine columns were soon as legendary as his performances in the saddle. Now Wofford brings his immense talent for telling tales—all of them (mostly) true—to the page in a lively and absorbing look back through time spent in and out of the saddle. With lessons in horsemanship both simple and profound interwoven with fascinating stories from his many diverse adventures around the world, readers enjoy a peek inside the wild ride that can be the life of an international equestrian while pondering weighty questions, such as how to make decisions for the good of the horse and how to find a soulful connection with him. Although these questions may never be fully answered, readers discover something about themselves as they see how philosophical investigation contributed to Wofford’s own evolution over time. An honest, funny, poignant read certain to entertain and educate every horse person.
