Download or read book Cross curricular Approaches to Teaching and Learning written by Chris Rowley and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2009-09-14 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would the primary curriculum look like with humanities at its heart? How can cross-curricular work help children to learn more effectively? With practical ideas on how to join up the primary curriculum, this book uses history and geography to explore different contexts and strategies for making links between the full range of primary subjects, so that learning can be more integrated and relevant to learners. The authors demonstrate how these subjects can serve as the basis upon which values can be developed in the curriculum. There are powerful case studies, including examples of pupils′ work and talk, and teachers′ reflections. Additional materials to accompany the book can be found at: www.sagepub.co.uk/rowleyandcooper Written by a group of practising teachers and university tutors, this book will be invaluable to primary teachers, student teachers and all those involved in curriculum design. Chris Rowley is Senior Lecturer in and Geographical and Environmental Education at the University of Cumbria, UK. Book excerpt: This qualitative, action research study documents the process of creating and implementing a service learning cross-age tutoring program. Two Seattle public school teachers collaborated to train their students and conduct regular tutoring sessions. The students were: twenty-two first-graders and twenty-five fourth and fifth-graders of diverse cultural and academic backgrounds. The factors educators need to consider are: ongoing training, finding adequate time, empowering the students, creating one-on-one rapport, and surprisingly, teaching the students to give and accept praise.

Book Cross age Peer Tutoring Between Kindergarten and Year Six Students in a New South Christian School

Download or read book Cross age Peer Tutoring Between Kindergarten and Year Six Students in a New South Christian School written by Mandi Hill and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cross-age peer tutoring involves the partnering of students from different age levels in a tutor-tutee relationship. A review of literature relating to cross-age peer tutoring revealed potential benefits for participants. This case study gathered data from a Christian school in a semi-rural district which ran a cross-age peer tutoring program (the 'Buddy Program'). A mixed-method approach was adopted to gather data by way of observations, questionnaires, interviews and a focus group. The data revealed that in this particular case a great majority of students enjoyed the program with student tutors perceiving their role as that of a 'helper' or 'teacher'. Evidence suggests that the program contributed to enhanced confidence, self-esteem and self-efficacy among participants. It was perceived by teachers, parents and participants that students benefitted academically, socially and personally from the program. The research also shows the program to have contributed towards enhanced metacognitive understanding among student tutors. Finally, the study suggests that a cross-age peer teaching program will be beneficial if teachers carefully plan and prepare for it.
