Book excerpt: Excerpt from Croquet Guide and Official Rules Governing the Game: As Adopted by the National American Croquet Association On the opposite page will be found the plan of a ground as adopted by the National Association, the dimensions of which are as follows: Length, 72 ft.; width, 36 ft.; corner pieces 8 ft. long, inside measurements, with a line denoting the boundary of the field 30 in. from the inside of the border. The stakes or post to be 1 in. in diameter and 11⁄2 in. high, situated outside of the above mentioned line at the centre of the width of the field. The first wicket to be 7 ft. from the stake; the second, 7 ft. from the first, on a line extending through the middle of the field; the side arches to be 6 ft.3 in. from the border, on a line with the second arch from each stake; the cage or double wicket in the centre to be 18 in. long and 33⁄8 in. between the wires, and set at right angles with a line drawn from stake to stake; the other eight arches to be 31⁄2 in. between the wires. The border, b, b, b, is best when made of some hard wood that will not warp, not smaller than 4x6 in., laid flat to serve as a cushion for carom shots; this timber or border should be beveled 1⁄2 in., making it measure 6 in. wide on top, 51⁄2 in. wide on the bottom and 4 inches high, which will prevent balls from jumping up or off the ground when used as a cushion. Excerpt: ... ever, when it is wished to draw the adversary away from playing the proper game, it is admissible to give a double shot as a "tice," so as to tempt him to shoot where his missing would give you the dead ball. Principle 9.-- When you are unlikely to make or continue a break with your own ball, play to lay the break for your partner. . When one or two doubtful and risky strokes would result, if successful, in a long break, it is worth while trying for it: but when, from the position of the balls, it is evident that no good break would ensue, even if those strokes were to succeed, the best play is to lay as good a break as possible for your partner; for keeping the break on your side is worth more than the chance of a point or two. Your game is to leave your partner a ball to play on, and another at his hoop, or a rush to his hoop, and a ball at his next hoop but one; or lay him a break in some other equally effective way. It is of great importance to know when to continue your own break, and when to leave off and play your partner's game. INSTRUCTIONS TO THE PLAYER WHO IS "IN," AND HAS THE BREAK. 1. Before you make your next point in your break, always provide, if possible, for your next point but one, either by sending a ball forward to help you there, or by arranging a rush to it from the point you are about to make. 2.
