Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crops and Markets, Vol. 2: July 19, 1924 Insistent demand featured the outlet for all classes of killing cattle during the week July 7 - 12. Hogs also met with the liveliest trade so far this year. Shippers as well as local slaughterers energetically entered both the cattle and hog trade, suggesting an active movement of the product into distributive channels. Lambs, however, failed to share in the activity, prices dropping to a point about as low as at any time during the current season. Generally higher prices featured the trading in all classes of fresh meats at eastern markets and Chicago. Receipts were moderate and arrived in generally good condition, while demand was well sustained throughout the week. First cars of grapes roiled from California during the week July 7 - 12, and another big grape season was started. Annual ship ments of this product are exceeded only by the volume of apples and potatoes. Movement was somewhat late in beginning, so that the total output to date is only half what it was to the same time a year ago; but shipments will increase rapidly and by August the markets should be fairly well supplied with California grapes. That State has practically no competition until movement starts from the important eastern grape sections in Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania. The total 1923 output of 18 shipping States was cars, oi which California furnished Shipments from the East were proportionally greater in 1922 than in 1923, and California this season may not come up to its high record of last year. Growing conditions have not been favorable in certain parts of the State, and July 1 estimates indicate a decrease of pounds in California's crop. Increases in the East may only half offset this loss. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crops and Markets, Vol. 1: March 1924 The general agricultural outlook for 1924 indicates that farmers are undertaking a normal production program It is apparent, however, that agricultural production this year will still be attended by the difficulties arising from high wages and other costs, loss of farm workers, and the general disparity between prices of farm and urban products. Domestic demand for agricultural. Products is at a high level Urban prosperity is reflected in a heavy current con sumption of fibers and high-quality foods, and this may be expected to continue into the summer. Foreign markets, on the whole, seem likely to maintain about the present level of demand for our cotton, pork, wheat, and tobacco. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crops and Markets, Vol. 1: May 17, 1924 The foreign demand for American dried fruits has been very active during the past nine months, the total exports from July 1, 1923, to March 31, 1924, having amounted to pounds, valued at as compared with only 190, pounds, valued at during the correspond ing period the year before. The German market for these commodities, particularly for prunes and apricots, has been the feature of the dried fruit exporting trade since the beginning of the year. Raisins are the only item in our exports of dried fruits that show a decrease during the past nine months, shipments having amounted to only pounds as compared with 000 pounds during the corresponding nine months last year. This decrease was due chiefly to the large decrease in shipments to the British market, to which only 15 million pounds were exported as compared with 36 million pounds the year before. The British market registered a poor demand for American raisins on account of the large quantities available from Greece and Turkey. Exports to the Netherlands were also lower, having decreased by more than two million pounds. This total decrease of some 24 million pounds in exports of raisins to the countries mentioned was partly offset, however, by the increase of 12 million pounds in shipments to China, Japan, Canada, Denmark, and Mexico. The large increase in shipments to China and Japan constitute the outstanding feature of the raisin trade during this period. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crops and Markets, Vol. 1: July 1924 The acreage planted to potatoes has been materially ia creased in New England, New York, and in most of the early States, but has been materially reduced in the northern States from Ohio west to the Dakotas. This leaves a net decrease in acreage of nearly 2 70. So far, prospects for yield are about average. The acreage of sweet potatoes shows a, very slight reduction from last year, due chiefly to unfavorable weather. The crop is stili being planted in some sections and the total acreage is somewhat uncertain. The outlook for apples on July 1 is for about as many bushels as were produced last year. The crop is, however, distributed quite differently, prospects being very good in the eastern States, fair in the Mississippi Valley, and unusually poor on the Pacific Coast.
