This book was released on 2023-11-03 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Crop Prospects and Food Situation report provides a forward-looking analysis of the food situation across the globe, focusing on the cereal production outlook, market situation and food security conditions, with a particular attention on Low-Income Food-Deficit Countries (LIFDCs). In 2023, FAO assesses that globally 46 countries/territories, including 33 in Africa, ten in Asia, two in Latin America and the Caribbean and one in Europe, are in need of external assistance for food. Persisting and intensifying conflicts are key drivers of the severest levels of acute food insecurity, with recent concerns centred on the Near East.Furthermore, despite declining international prices, weak currencies in many low income countries are sustaining high domestic food prices and hampering households’ access to food. Regarding cereal production, while the global cereal output is forecast to expand by 0.9 percent in 2023 from the year before, the pace of growth will be half that rate for the group of 44 LIFDCs.

Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to advanced data science techniques for signal mining in connection with agriculture. It shows how to apply heuristic modeling to improve farm-level efficiency, and how to use sensors and data intelligence to provide closed-loop feedback, while also providing recommendation techniques that yield actionable insights. The book also proposes certain macroeconomic pricing models, which data-mine macroeconomic signals and the influence of global economic trends on small-farm sustainability to provide actionable insights to farmers, helping them avoid financial disasters due to recurrent economic crises. The book is intended to equip current and future software engineering teams and operations research experts with the skills and tools they need in order to fully utilize advanced data science, artificial intelligence, heuristics, and economic models to develop software capabilities that help to achieve sustained food security for future generations.

This book was released on 2023-05-25 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A growing body of research and scientific as well as local evidence has shown that climate change impacts is on the rise with its attendant risks/hazards for the land system, even as it relates to DLDD, these being exacerbated by anthropogenic factors; thus, pushing the earth system to a tipping point therefore requiring that society braze up its coping capacities to avert the impending danger. This book highlights the urgent need to move from desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD) risk management to resilience. The aim is to provide new insight on the issues of DLDD and stir policy guide on vulnerability reduction and building adaptive capacities so as to achieve sustainable development and identify pathways to a land degradation neutral world. It is worthy to note that globally, about one fifth of earth’s land area – more than 2 billion hectares – is degraded; and this jeopardizes the livelihoods of more than 3.5 billion people, i.e., about 40% of the world population. The global population is still growing and is projected to reach 8.3 billion people by 2030. Such growth will put unprecedented pressure on the productivity of the land system from day to day.

Download or read book The role of genetic resources for food and agriculture in adaptation to and mitigation of climate change written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-04-21 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the pace of climate change is increasing, it is more important than ever to conserve, characterize and sustainably use genetic resources for food and griculture. Over millennia farmers, livestock keepers, fisherfolk and forest dwellers have adapted their production systems to changing environmental conditions, relying on genetic resources for food and agriculture. However, these resources are still not receiving the attention they deserve given their enormous importance. The main focus of this study is the state of current use of genetic resources in climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts. Each chapter explores the impacts of climate change on genetic resources and also considers the significance of genetic resources to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
