Book excerpt: Salinity becomes a problem in Semiarid and arid and arid regions of the world, posing major challange to provide food for the rapidly increasing population. Inappropriate agricultural practies have resulted in increasing saline waters and saline lands, which are worthless for conventional agriculture. Excess salts accumulate in the root zone, prevents water absorption from surrounding soil and lowering the amount of water available to the plant. The most likely effect of salinity on plants is stunted growth, and physical damage or mortality may be caused at higher salt concentration. Researches conducted in last few decades reveal hundreds of salt tolerant plants in the world most of which could be utilized as cash crops using novel ideas and technologies. However, there is still a need to develop technology of saline agriculture suited to the different ecosystems of the world and major efforts are required to domesticate them using modern technology. This publication, through its 27 chapters exposes the difficulty of squeezing agricultural output, faced by mostly dry and saline parts of the world due to scarcity of clean water and fertile land for crop production. The volume also provides a facinating view on the safeguards and remedies to overcome this problem by means of modern techniques and natural resistant phenomenon of the flora in itself. The volume is chiefly based on the discussions and presentation during the International workshop on Crop and Forage Production using Saline Waters in Dry Areas held in Birjand, Iran during 7-10 May, 2006. A thorough knowledge of the hydrological cycle, amount and distribution of rainfall, water resources and irrigation projects in India facilitates efficient utilization of water for crop production. Inadequate supply of water to crops in semi-arid and arid regions adversely affects agricultural production. Properties of water, the mode of its entry into the soil and its absorption by roots of crops are important for irrigation. This necessitates accurate determination of the soil moisture content, the plants and available water which is essential for growth and yield of crops. Its deficiency adversely affects their growth and yield. Irrigation must be extended to unirrigated areas in order to increase the production of food, fibre and fodder for which we must know the source of irrigation water, units and methods of measurement of water, methods of irrigating crop fields, factors affecting the choice of irrigation methods, the degree of the suitability of the available water for irrigating crops and the factors affecting the suitability of water for irrigation. As water is a relatively scarce commodity, we must know whether water of a little inferior quality can be utilized to irrigate crops. In addition, we must be familiar with the precautions which need to be taken in this regard. The accumulation of excess water in the soils of the crop fields affects the growth of crops adversely enough to reduce their yields. Choice of the method of land drainage varies with the variation in the topography of the land. It is also necessary to rectify the causes of waterlogging to bring the waterlogged land back under the plough to increase agricultural production. This necessitates drainage investigation and laying out of the proper drainage system. Water requirement of crops depends on the climate and the crop. More water is required to produce crops in the arid region than in the humid region. Crops like paddy and sugar cane require much larger amount of water than finger millet and pearl millet. The book extensively deals with all these aspects related to soil and crop production and suggests measures to enhance productivity through water conservation and proper management of water resources. It will be highly useful for the students, teachers and researchers working in this field. Besides, agriculturists and general readers will also find it useful and informative.

Book excerpt: This paper presents a synthesis of 15 success stories in the production, processing, and marketing of high-value food products (HVF) in developing countries in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. High-value food products, such as fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, meats, fish, dairy products, and vegetable oils, are defined as having high intrinsic value or a high rate of value added through processing. Trade in these products has expanded while trade and prices for other agricultural products, such as most staple crops, have stagnated or declined. The growing trade in HVF has prompted policymakers in developing countries to examine more closely how they can expand and diversify their exports of these products. This study explores the technical, organizational, and commercial challenges facing those in HVF export development. It identifies common market and institutional factors that have contributed to the growth and international competitiveness in HVF trade. Particular note is made of the roles of the private and public sectors and of the effect of the policy environment. It examines the effect of institutional coordination on the stages of production, processing, and trade. An annex summarizes 12 case studies of the development and performance of food commodity markets. It includes export of fresh vegetables from Kenya in the 1960s, shrimp from Thailand in the 1970s, and processed tomatoes from Chile in the 1980s.

Fresh water resources which are very scarce, forming only 3% of the total water reserves are overexploited and consequently have been tending to cause salinisation. Remaining 97% water in sea is excessively saline and generally not suitable for large scale exploitation in agriculture. More than half of the world's ground water supplies are also saline. Although, to cope with the increasing requirements of the accelerating population, irrigated area in the world in last two centuries has increased from 8 mha (1800) to 220 mha (1990), but development of salinity on about half the irrigated land, caused due to indiscriminate use of waters, has been a serious constraint for optimum crop production. In this context, the rational use of irrigation waters, without development of salinity, is the most important challenging task and herein lies the value of scientific knowledge on the use of saline water in agriculture. The first edition of this monograph was published in 1979 and second revised edition was published in 1990. The purpose of the present third revised edition was to update the relevant information so that the latest synthesised knowledge becomes easily accessible to research workers, teachers, postgraduate students, extension people, and planners, who can utilise it profitably in the diagnosis and improvement of saline water irrigated agriculture. Although, the book contains most of the research work pertaining to India, but the principles and practices of the utilisation of saline waters can be extended safely to many countries of the world, confronted with the similar problems.

Book excerpt: A major problem for irrigated agricultural production in arid and semi-arid environments is salinization of land. Irrigated land accounts for about one third of the world's food, but nearly one fifth of irrigated lands are salt affected and suffer from reduced yield due to soil salinization. Many farmers worldwide currently leach their lands to remove salt, but this practice can create further problems such as polluting nearby water sources with salt, fertilizer, and pesticides. Most common cultivated crops are known as glycophytes and suffer from reduced yield when subjected to salt stress. However, about 1% of the world's flora are known as halophytes, or plants that are capable of completing their life-cycle in higher saline soil or water environments. Halophytes are not commonly cultivated, but may be useful for human consumption, biofuel, or animal consumption. As a first step to assessing the potential of halophytic plants for salinity management, the Agricultural Policy/Environmental Extender (APEX) model was updated with a module to simulate plant-water-soil salinity dynamics using electrical conductance. The halophytes Atriplex nitens, Climacoptera lanata, and Salicornia europeae were parameterized in the APEX model's plant database. Plant, soil, and water data from field sites in the Central Kyzylkum and Khorezm regions of Uzbekistan were used to set up APEX models for two field sites. Measured data collected from the two field sites in 2013 were used to assess model performance. Although APEX ran with the salinity module and produced output, analysis of the output indicated that further work is needed to produce a model that will be useful for assessing salinity management with halophytes. A sensitivity analysis was performed on 47 parameters in APEX, and 14 were found to be sensitive for biomass, crop height, and soil electrical conductance (EC) output, including soil parameters such as soil albedo, sand content, and silt content. After running 500 simulations with random combinations of sensitive parameters, best fit results between observed and modeled values for crop biomass, crop height, and soil EC had deviations of as much as 42.5 tonnes/ha biomass, 200 cm of crop height and 23 mS/cm of EC, respectively. Suggestions for model improvements include enabling the modeling of individual salt ions because plants may experience toxic effects of different ions. Additionally, halophytes and conventional crops will die or fail to germinate under threshold salinity levels, but this relationship was not demonstrated with the model. Some halophytes have an increased yield under moderate soil salt levels, and salt can percolate into deeper soil layers, but these phenomena were also not simulated by the model. Future iterations of this project will benefit from more field data. Daily weather from the modeled time period should be used instead of generated weather based on monthly statistics. Plant and soil data should be taken at more frequent intervals, preferably at least once a month.
