Book Improved Crop Productivity for Africa s Drylands

Download or read book Improved Crop Productivity for Africa s Drylands written by Tom Walker and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-08-17 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 200 million people living in dryland regions of Sub-Saharan Africa make their living from agriculture. Most are exposed to weather shocks, especially drought, that can decimate their incomes, destroy their assets, and plunge them into a poverty trap from which it is diffi cult to emerge. Their lack of resilience in the face of these shocks can be attributed in large part to the poor performance of agriculture on which their livelihood depends. Opportunities exist to improve the fortunes of farming households in the drylands. Improved farming technologies that can increase and stabilize the production of millet, sorghum, maize, and other leading staples are available. Irrigation is technically and economically feasible in some areas and offers additional opportunities to increase and stabilize crop production, especially small-scale irrigation, which tends to be more affordable and easier to manage. Yet many of these opportunities have not been exploited on a large scale, for reasons that include lack of farmer knowledge, nonavailability of inputs, unfavorable price incentives, high levels of production risk, and high cost. Future production growth in drylands agriculture is expected to come mainly from raising yields and increasing the number of crop rotations on land that is already being cultivated (intensifi cation), rather than from bringing new land into cultivation (extensifi cation). Controlling for rainfall, average yields in rainfed cropping systems in Sub-Saharan Africa are still much lower than yields in rainfed cropping systems in other regions, suggesting that there is considerable scope to intensify production in these systems. Furthermore, unlike in other regions, production of low-value cereals under irrigation is generally not economic in Sub-Saharan Africa unless the cereals can be grown in rotation with one or more high-value cash crops. The long-run strategy for drylands agriculture, therefore, must be to promote production of staples in rainfed systems and production of high-value cereals (for example, rice), horticultural cops, and industrial crops in irrigated systems. Based on a detailed review of currently available technologies, Improved Crop Productivity for Africa’s Drylands argues that improving the productivity and stability of agriculture in the drylands has the potential to make a signifi cant contribution to reducing vulnerability and increasing resilience. At the same time, it is important to keep in mind that in an environment characterized by limited agro-climatic potential and subject to repeated shocks, farming on small land holdings may not generate suffi cient income to bring people out of poverty.

Book Securing the Harvest

Download or read book Securing the Harvest written by Joseph DeVries and published by CABI. This book was released on 2001 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improved food security, led by increased productivity among Africa's many small-scale farmers, has been the aim of significant national and international effort in recent decades. It has proved to be one of the most critical challenges facing humankind. This book grew out of a two-year exploration conducted by the food security theme of The Rockefeller Foundation focusing on the potential for crop genetic improvement to contribute to food security among rural populations in Africa. It provides a critical assessment of the ways in which recent breakthroughs in biotechnology, participatory plant breeding, and seed systems can be broadly employed in developing and delivering more productive crop varieties in Africa's diverse agricultural environments. It also presents an analysis of current plant breeding and biotechnology strategies for the key crops in Africa including: maize, sorghum, cowpea, rice, and cassava. The book will appeal to plant breeders, biotechnologists, and seed distributors as well as policy-makers in the area of agricultural development.

Book Transforming Agriculture in Southern Africa

Download or read book Transforming Agriculture in Southern Africa written by Richard A. Sikora and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a synthesis of the key issues and challenges facing agriculture and food production in Southern Africa. Southern Africa is facing numerous challenges from diverse issues such as agricultural transformations, growing populations, urbanization and climate change. These challenges place great pressure on food security, agriculture, water availability and other natural resources, as well as impacting biodiversity. Drawing on case studies from Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, the chapters in this book consider these challenges from an interdisciplinary perspective, covering key areas in constraints to production, the most important building blocks of good farming practices, and established and emerging technologies. This book will be a valuable support for informing new policies and processes aimed at improving food production and security and developing sustainable agriculture in Southern Africa. This informative volume will be key reading for those interested in agricultural science, African studies, rural studies, development studies and sustainability. It will also be a valuable resource for policymakers, governmental and nongovernmental organizations, and agricultural practitioners. Book Improving Income and Nutrition in Eastern and Southern Africa by Enhancing Vegetable based Farming and Food Systems in Peri urban Corridors VINESA

Download or read book Improving Income and Nutrition in Eastern and Southern Africa by Enhancing Vegetable based Farming and Food Systems in Peri urban Corridors VINESA written by John Macharia and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This project aimed to improve nutrition, employment and income opportunities for vegetable growers and their families in Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania's peri-urban areas, the outskirts of cities. Malnutrition, poor diet diversity and youth migration to cities are widespread problems in eastern and southern Africa. Residents undertake agriculture on the fringes of cities (peri-urban areas), often using resources (land, water, energy, labour) that could serve other purposes to satisfy the urban population's needs. This project improved vegetable variety and seed supply systems, enhanced crop management practices, and developed a more effective value chain. Research assessed and promoted technologies and practices to produce more and safer vegetables. It evaluated and deployed improved varieties and high quality seed for selected vegetables. It assessed the feasibility of value adding and processing options, particularly post-harvest storage. It also built capacity to strengthen national vegetable research and development. The project operated via 'Best Practice Hubs' as centres to demonstrate crop trials, post-harvest handling techniques and other interventions. These hubs served as an educational base for vegetable farmers, while also attracting traders and the wider public. Research data also help policy makers to formulate policies."--Website.
