Book Macroeconomics and the Phillips Curve Myth

Download or read book Macroeconomics and the Phillips Curve Myth written by James Forder and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-10-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reconsiders the role of the Phillips curve in macroeconomic analysis in the first twenty years following the famous work by A. W. H. Phillips, after whom it is named. It argues that the story conventionally told is entirely misleading. In that story, Phillips made a great breakthrough but his work led to a view that inflationary policy could be used systematically to maintain low unemployment, and that it was only after the work of Milton Friedman and Edmund Phelps about a decade after Phillips' that this view was rejected. On the contrary, a detailed analysis of the literature of the times shows that the idea of a negative relation between wage change and unemployment - supposedly Phillips' discovery - was commonplace in the 1950s, as were the arguments attributed to Friedman and Phelps by the conventional story. And, perhaps most importantly, there is scarcely any sign of the idea of the inflation-unemployment tradeoff promoting inflationary policy, either in the theoretical literature or in actual policymaking. The book demonstrates and identifies a number of main strands of the actual thinking of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s on the question of the determination of inflation and its relation to other variables. The result is not only a rejection of the Phillips curve story as it has been told, and a reassessment of the understanding of the economists of those years of macroeconomics, but also the construction of an alternative, and historically more authentic account, of the economic theory of those times. A notable outcome is that the economic theory of the time was not nearly so naïve as it has been portrayed.

Book The Rise of the Global South

Download or read book The Rise of the Global South written by Justin Dargin and published by World Scientific Publishing Company Incorporated. This book was released on 2013 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a broad and in-depth introduction to the geopolitical, economic and trade changes wrought with the increasing influence of the countries of the Global South in international affairs. The global role of the developing countries came to the forefront in 1974, when the United Nations General Assembly promulgated The New International Economic Order. Since then, the countries of the Global South, particularly China, India, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Qatar, made an indelible impact upon the world's economic architecture. However, their true influence became starkly illustrated during the onset of the 2000s, when several seismic events occurred. The September Eleventh terrorist attacks with the resultant debilitating wars in Iraq and Afghanistan extreme world commodity price increases and the global financial crisis of 2007 2008 all served to wrench the epicenter of global influence increasingly southward. While the developed countries of the Global North became mired in economic stagnation with problems associated with the global financial crisis, their collective influence waned. Since then, the world has been attempting to accommodate, somewhat unevenly, the rising geopolitical and economic clout of the Global South. This book presents a collection of scholarly articles that, taken together, functions as a primer on the workings of the immense global changes at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

Book British Emigration to Australia

Download or read book British Emigration to Australia written by R.T. Appleyard and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1964-12-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year nearly 30,000 Britons emigrate to Australia under the Assisted Passages Scheme. In return for near-free transport they are required only to stay a minimum of two years in Australia. Are these persons the ne'er-do-wells of British society, the unskilled misfits who have not been able to succeed in Britain? Do they base their decisions to emigrate on reliable information and study economic opportunities in other overseas countries before choosing Australia? To what extent do relatives and friends in Australia and the fact that it is a British country influence their decisions? Why do they leave their homeland – inequality of opportunity; a hostile class structure; the climate? What do they know about the country many of them will never leave and what do they hope to achieve by going there? In 1959 Dr Appleyard and a team of interviewers set out to find the answers to these questions. They conducted long interviews with nine hundred British families (and single persons) just before they sailed for Australia. This book contains the results of the interviews set in the background of post-war emigration to Australia, demographic and economic conditions in each country, government policies which have been formulated to meet these conditions, and actual differences in wage, social services, and the ownership of houses and consumer durables between the United Kingdom and Australia.

Book The Economics of Innocent Fraud

Download or read book The Economics of Innocent Fraud written by John Kenneth Galbraith and published by Penguin Books, Limited (UK). This book was released on 2009 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'An almost indecently pleasurable read' The Times In this vigorous polemic John Kenneth Galbraith, a lifelong critic of unbridled corporate power, distils years of expertise to deliver a scathing attack on the modern financial system. Sounding the alarm on the gap between 'conventional wisdom' - a phrase he coined - and reality, Galbraith warns that the private sector and the public realm are becoming increasingly intertwined. He shows how politics and the media have colluded in the myth of a benign market system, accepting obscene pay gaps and unrestrained self-enrichment – ultimately meaning that we have come to condone legal, legitimate, 'innocent' fraud. First published in 2004, this extraordinarily prescient analysis of capitalism now has even greater power and relevance for our times. 'I agree with Galbraith. The bonus culture is skim, bribery, corporate theft' Simon Jenkins, Guardian 'The most stylish writer on economics of the past half-century ... it will please those who appreciate Galbraith's dry wit and laconic iconoclasm' Financial Times 'America's great liberal economist, the intellectual heir to John Maynard Keynes' Economist
