Book excerpt: Val Plumwood was an eminent environmental philosopher and activist who was prominent in the development of radical ecophilosophy from the early 1970s until her death in 2008. Her book Feminism and the Mastery of Nature (1992) has become a classic. In 1985 she was attacked by a crocodile while kayaking alone in the Kakadu national park in the Northern Territory. She was death rolled three times before being released from the crocodile’s jaws. She crawled for hours through swamp with appalling injuries before being rescued. The experience made her well placed to write about cultural responses to death and predation. The first section of The Eye of the Crocodile consists of chapters intended for a book on crocodiles that remained unfinished at the time of Val’s death. The remaining chapters are previously published papers brought together to form an overview of Val’s ideas on death, predation and nature.

Download or read book Feminism and the Mastery of Nature written by Val Plumwood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of the most important political movements of the late twentieth century are those of environmentalism and feminism. In this book, Val Plumwood argues that feminist theory has an important opportunity to make a major contribution to the debates in political ecology and environmental philosophy. Feminism and the Mastery of Nature explains the relation between ecofeminism, or ecological feminism, and other feminist theories including radical green theories such as deep ecology. Val Plumwood provides a philosophically informed account of the relation of women and nature, and shows how relating male domination to the domination of nature is important and yet remains a dilemma for women.

Book When a Crocodile Eats the Sun

Download or read book When a Crocodile Eats the Sun written by Peter Godwin and published by Back Bay Books. This book was released on 2008-04-10 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After his father's heart attack in 1984, Peter Godwin began a series of pilgrimages back to Zimbabwe, the land of his birth, from Manhattan, where he now lives. On these frequent visits to check on his elderly parents, he bore witness to Zimbabwe's dramatic spiral downwards into the jaws of violent chaos, presided over by an increasingly enraged dictator. And yet long after their comfortable lifestyle had been shattered and millions were fleeing, his parents refuse to leave, steadfast in their allegiance to the failed state that has been their adopted home for 50 years. Then Godwin discovered a shocking family secret that helped explain their loyalty. Africa was his father's sanctuary from another identity, another world. When a Crocodile Eats the Sun is a stirring memoir of the disintegration of a family set against the collapse of a country. But it is also a vivid portrait of the profound strength of the human spirit and the enduring power of love.

Book Discoveries of a Crocodile Man

Download or read book Discoveries of a Crocodile Man written by Tony Pooley and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the history of the development of a childhood passion into an international career in crocodile conservation. It is also a book about the making of a field biologist, of a boy who never finished school but devoured books on natural history - and who was trained in the field by skilled Zulu naturalists in the now underrated art of paying close and sustained attention to the natural world. Tony is one of a handful of conservationists who have succeeded in describing the tough, challenging days of early wildlife conservation in South Africa with a forthright commitment and dedication to conservation, but also great sensitivity to the natural world, and empathy with the humans affected by conservation with its admixture of harmful and uplifting impacts and consequences. This book is above all the story of the struggle to learn more about the much maligned and secretive Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus), and to convince the authorities and the public of its right to survive in the continent's protected waterways. Along the way, the reader learns a great deal about crocodile biology and behaviour, most notably Tony's findings on crocodilian parental care. Readers of Discoveries of a Crocodile Man will learn much about the ecological relations of crocodiles with their fellow creatures in their particular environments. Discoveries also provides insights into the lost world of Zululand in the 1950s-70s, both ecologically and socially. Tony narrates his struggles to care for captive crocodiles, at his three crocodile research facilities where he pioneered techniques in captive rearing. The intention was to restock Zululand's then declining populations. We also learn about Tony's attempts to convince the public to tolerate crocodiles, in the face of widespread prejudices, negative cultural beliefs, and of course attacks on humans and domestic animals. This Second edition includes a new introduction providing further biographical information and historical context.

Book Croc Bait

Download or read book Croc Bait written by Leonie Norrington and published by Omnibus Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Croc Bait is the only Solo fiction story to be placed in a recognisably Australian setting, Black Bull Yard, a well-known fishing spot on the Daly River. Sean loves camping and fishing with his extended family, including his two uncles, Uncle Spook and Uncle Whistler. He'd love to go night fishing and croc hunting with the grown-ups, but is always told that he's too small. Early one morning he takes things into his own hands and sneaks out of the tent and down the river to check the fishing lines. A line tied to a big old fallen tree is moving round and round in the water. It's a fish! Excited, Sean walks out along the tree to pull it in. But unknown to him, he's being watched too, by a cold, sleepy crocodile. Luckily Uncle Spook comes to Sean's rescue with his spear-gun, and the two make a pact not to tell Mum and Dad. Sean finally has a nickname, just like Uncle Whistler and Uncle Spook. It's 'Croc Bait'. But only Sean and Uncle Spook know the story behind it!
