The country is also known as Hrvatska in Croatian, and its capital and largest city is Zagreb. Croatia has a population of approximately 4.05 million people, with the majority of residents identifying as ethnic Croats. Croatia has a rich cultural history that dates back to prehistoric times. Its strategic location between Central Europe and the Mediterranean has made it an important crossroads for various civilizations, including the Illyrians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and Austro-Hungarians. Croatia gained its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 and has since become a member of the European Union, NATO, and the United Nations. The country is known for its stunning coastline, beautiful national parks, and rich culinary traditions, and it has become an increasingly popular tourist destination in recent years.

Book Design and Heritage

  • Author : Grace Lees-Maffei
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2021-12-29
  • ISBN : 1000528790
  • Pages : 297 pages

Download or read book Design and Heritage written by Grace Lees-Maffei and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-29 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design and Heritage provides the first extended study of heritage from the point of view of design history. Exploring the material objects and spaces that contribute to our experience of heritage, the volume also examines the processes and practices that shape them. Bringing together 18 case studies, written by authors from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, Norway, India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, the book questions how design functions to produce heritage. Including provocative case studies of objects that reinterpret visual symbols of cultural identity and buildings and monuments that evoke feelings of national pride and historical memory, as well as landscapes embedded with trauma, contributors consider how we can work to develop adequate shared conceptual models of heritage and apply them to design and its histories. Exploring the distinction between tangible and intangible heritages, the chapters consider what these categories mean for design history and heritage. Finally, the book questions whether it might be possible to promote a truly equitable understanding of heritage that illuminates the social, cultural and economic roles of design. Design and Heritage demonstrates that design historical methods of inquiry contribute significantly to critical heritage studies. Academics, researchers and students engaged in the study of heritage, design history, material culture, folklore, art history, architectural history and social and cultural history will find much to interest them within the pages of the book.

Book excerpt: This book is written in the form of a memoir and covers the events in the life of its author, Vilma Vukelić from her earliest childhood (she was born in 1880) to 15 August 1904, the day her first child, Branko was born. It is a contribution to women’s history in the form of a portrait of an intelligent young woman and a burgeoning feminist resisting social norms imposed on women of her generation. It is a contribution to the history of central and southeastern Europe with its spirited descriptions of the bourgeois life in Osijek, a small provincial town by the River Drava close to the Hungarian-Croatian border, at the outskirts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is a contribution to Jewish history, with the specific emphasis on the life in various Jewish settlements in central and eastern Europe. The author describes late nineteenth-century Jewish optimistic attempts towards social integration and full acceptance by the surrounding society—hopes and expectations tragically shattered soon after. It is a lively account of a happy childhood, full of colourful descriptions of a little girl’s discoveries of the wonderful as well as bleak aspects of life. Book The Art of Palestinian Embroidery

Download or read book The Art of Palestinian Embroidery written by Leila El Khalidi and published by Saqi Books - Saqi Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Palestinian folk arts have a rich and fascinating history. Silk thread and embroidery, together with an expanding repertoire of symbols, are known to have made their way from China to the Holy Land along the Silk and Spice Routes before being introduced to Europe by Christian saints, holy men and pilgrims. Mainly using cross-stitch, Palestinians have continued to embroider their traditional motifs, giving them their own appellations and developing their own terminology. As clothing was of prime importance, Palestinian women wanted something personal, distinctive and handmade. By adopting the traditional styles and motifs of her area, a woman expressed her wish to identify and be identified with her cultural roots. Samples of late-nineteenth to early-twentieth century Palestinian costumes are considered to be representative of folk art at its best. Through the vicissitudes of war and occupation, Palestinian folk materials have been dispersed, though samples are to be found in published material, in museums outside Palestine and in small private collections. Leila El Khalidi's work in identifying and recording the history and motifs in Palestinian embroidery will be of interest both to craftspeople and to students of folk traditions and is an important step in preserving the Palestinian heritage. The book is illustrated with a detailed appendix showing the principal motifs and with photographs of traditional costumes
