Download or read book The Notion of Near Islands written by Nenad Starc and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viewed from the mainland, the history of the archipelago appears as a long list of non-invited but irresistible disembarkations. Viewed from on an island the archipelago has had a rich and unique history of sustainable use of scarce resources. The main theme of this book is the exploration of the meanings of near islands, of the archipelago. General and particular features of 1,246 islands of the Croatian archipelago are starting points of stories about particular islands, subarchipelagos and urban archipelagos. The chapters question and analyse the archipelago identity from different perspectives. Approached as a group of islands, the analysis investigates features of subarchipelagos, urban subarchipelagos, mainland dependent islands, outlying islands and island emigrant communities that are trying to restore and conserve their island. This book highlights the identity and identities of the archipelago as both complex and multidimensional.

Download or read book My Grandma Is Like the Sea written by Natalie Franceska and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Grandma is Like the Sea follows the journey of a grandchild and grandmother who explore the sea and share unconditional love. The grandchild connects with the world, supported by the grandmother, whose love is as wide and vast as the deep blue sea. Such love inspires the child to take risks, live from the heart, and respect others and the environment. When children feel a sense of belonging, they are free to be themselves - however that looks. In the words of Brené Brown, 'True belonging doesn't require you to change who you are; it requires you to be who you are.' Using unique and poetic prose storytelling, a strong message of love is at the core of the beautifully illustrated My Grandma is Like the Sea. This encourages young readers to explore the world and pursue their dreams, knowing that they are worthy and loved. Learn alongside the story's main character as Grandma shares her wisdom and knowledge of this magical world. What magic can you discover?
Download or read book Poetics of Children s Literature written by Zohar Shavit and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2009-11-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its emergence in the seventeenth century as a distinctive cultural system, children's literature has had a culturally inferior status resulting from its existence in a netherworld between the literary system and the educational system. In addition to its official readership—children—it has to be approved of by adults. Writers for children, explains Zohar Shavit, are constrained to respond to these multiple systems of often mutually contradictory demands. Most writers do not try to bypass these constraints, but accept them as a framework for their work. In the most extreme cases an author may ignore one segment of the readership. If the adult reader is ignored, the writer risks rejection, as is the case of popular literature. If the writer utilizes the child as a pseudo addressee in order to appeal to an adult audience, the result can be what Shavit terms an ambivalent work. Shavit analyzes the conventions and the moral aims that have structured children's literature, from the fairy tales collected and reworked by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm—in particular, “Little Red Riding Hood”—through the complex manipulations of Lewis Carroll in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, to the subversion of the genre's canonical requirements in the chapbooks of the eighteenth century, and in the formulaic Nancy Drew books of the twentieth century. Throughout her study Shavit, explores not only how society has shaped children's literature, but also how society has been reflected in the literary works it produces for its children.
