Download or read book Running Away to Home written by Jennifer Wilson and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A middle class, Midwestern family in search of meaning uproot themselves and move to their ancestral village in Croatia. "We can look at this in two ways," Jim wrote, always the pragmatist. "We can panic and scrap the whole idea. Or we can take this as a sign. They're saying the economy is going to get worse before it gets better. Maybe this is the kick in the pants we needed to do something completely different. There will always be an excuse not to go..." And that, friends, is how a typically sane middle-aged mother decided to drag her family back to a forlorn mountain village in the backwoods of Croatia. So begins author Jennifer Wilson's journey in Running Away to Home. Jen, her architect husband, Jim, and their two children had been living the typical soccer- and ballet-practice life in the most Middle American of places: Des Moines, Iowa. They overindulged themselves and their kids, and as a family they were losing one another in the rush of work, school, and activities. One day, Jen and her husband looked at each other–both holding their Starbucks coffee as they headed out to their SUV in the mall parking lot, while the kids complained about the inferiority of the toys they just got–and asked themselves: "Is this the American dream? Because if it is, it sort of sucks." Jim and Jen had always dreamed of taking a family sabbatical in another country, so when they lost half their savings in the stock-market crash, it seemed like just a crazy enough time to do it. High on wanderlust, they left the troubled landscape of contemporary America for the Croatian mountain village of Mrkopalj, the land of Jennifer's ancestors. It was a village that seemed hermetically sealed for the last one hundred years, with a population of eight hundred (mostly drunken) residents and a herd of sheep milling around the post office. For several months they lived like locals, from milking the neighbor's cows to eating roasted pig on a spit to desperately seeking the village recipe for bootleg liquor. As the Wilson-Hoff family struggled to stay sane (and warm), what they found was much deeper and bigger than themselves.

Download or read book Children in Hospitality and Tourism written by Hugues Séraphin and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-09-07 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book works to fill a serious gap in tourism and hospitality research – children as future consumers. For decades, researchers and industry practitioners alike have overlooked and undervalued the significance of children’s perspectives and their influence as decision-makers. However, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) emphasizes that children have the right to participate in matters that affect them. With this in mind, the contributors to this edited collection draw attention to children as thinkers, actors and transformers of the future of the tourism and hospitality industry. Through a mix of conceptual and empirical chapters, the book collectively supports an overarching theme: the empowerment of children as present and future consumers should be a core component of any sustainable tourism initiative. Towards this goal, the chapters herein represent internationally diverse perspectives and offer a number of innovative recommendations to the industry’s practitioners.
Download or read book The Lantern House written by Erin Napier and published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. This book was released on 2022-05-24 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the nationally beloved co-host of the #1 hit show Home Town comes the quintessential celebration of home. Imagine a house's early days as a home: A young family builds a picket fence and plants flowers in its yard, children climb the magnolia tree and play the piano in the living room, and there is music inside the house for many happy years. But what will happen when its windows grow dark, its paint starts to crumble, and its boards creak in the winter wind? The house dreams of a family who will love it again...and one day, a new story will emerge from within its walls. In this modern classic, Erin Napier’s lyrical prose and Adam Trest’s warm and comforting paintings deeply evoke the soul of a house cherishing the seasons of life and discovering the joy of rebirth.
Download or read book The Traveling Circus written by Marie-Louise Gay and published by Groundwood Books Ltd. This book was released on 2015-03-25 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlie and his family are about to embark on another trip, to another out-of-the-way place off the beaten path. This time they are heading to an island in Croatia, a country Charlie has never even heard of. An incredibly beautiful country that lives in the shadow of war and conflict. Even for a seasoned traveler like Charlie, Croatia is a very different experience. To travel in a country where the language is completely unfamiliar and half the words have no vowels. To visit remote villages where the Internet is so slow, you might as well not have it at all. Where goats are a traffic-calming device, red cliffs loom like fortresses over an impossibly blue sea, and luggage porters are a line of women pushing wheelbarrows. Still, Charlie and his little brother, Max, manage to find adventure wherever they go. There’s cliff diving, pigs on spits, hair-raising ferry crossings and snake juice for breakfast (“Breakfast in Croatia — at your own risk!”). And there’s a sober side to their adventures this time, too. A friend who was sentenced to Croatia’s version of Alcatraz, despite committing no crime. An unsettling encounter with the Hermit of Vrgada. The sight of a half-destroyed village divided by a war that nobody won. Charlie finds out that this area of the world has a long and troubled history, that wars are complicated, and that long-time feuds can continue to divide neighbors generations later. But he also discovers that you don’t need to speak the same language to communicate with people. Not when you’re having a party in a field, surrounded by goats and dancing in the glow of car headlights with the radio blaring out Croatian music. A warm, funny and thought-provoking book that celebrates a child’s love of adventure and boundless curiosity about the world.

Download or read book HOW CHILDREN GROW written by ?Uro Mari?I? and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Đuro Maričic, for more than seventy years, is friends of children, nature, and animals. He loves and adores them. He's a great friend. He writes poems and stories for children. He knows very well the lives of children, their games and pranks in the family, school, and on the street. He observes first children's charity. When he is with them, the child becomes a poet. Humor is present in many Chuck songs. He feels that laughter is a cure! Đuro has written more than seven hundred songs for kids. Renowned Croatian writer, Tito Bilopavlovic, edited the journal for kids, SMIB, which is intended for children of lower ages, for fifteen years. In the book How Grow Children, Tito chose twenty-eight of Đuro's anthology poems. The famous poet Luko Paljetak of Croatian Academy wrote a review, a recommendation for the publication of this beautiful collection of songs. The song "The First-Grade Duckling" entered the readers in the first grade, in Croatia, secret letters, whose authors are Jadranka Zlokic and Terezija Bralic. It is on the first page. Some of these songs are also readers in the lower grades of primary school in Serbia. These poems have been published in magazines for children in Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Herzegovina. Interestingly enough, the only one of the songs, "Menagerie," did Đuro install as thirteen animals. In other songs, besides the children and their mischief, are dogs, cats, chicken, butterfly, small kangaroo, sparrow, centipede, giraffe, rabbit, rooster, fox, and bear. There are also doll, dad, mom, and captain of the ship. Nature is present in many poems of this book. There are seasons: spring, summer and harvest, sunflowers, autumn and quince, winter and frost. Reading these poems is the ultimate pleasure for children, but adults also like to read them and remember. Do not forget them; they often come back and read it again.
